Man, I Love It and That Bothers Me - LEGO Batman the Animated Series Gotham City Skyline Revealed

Today I'm covering the news reveal of the new LEGO DC Batman the Animated Series Gotham City Skyline which releases this April for a whopping... $550NZD. That's insane.
I think the set is beautiful. I love its key details, I love DC, I love Batman, I really like this one a lot. But I’m also turned away at the attitudes LEGO have been giving us about how they view Batman and LEGO DC. I want DC to have the same treatment as Marvel, give me playsets and regular released waves so that I can support those ones. This is a deep sale pick up, or a pick up 1-2 years from today.

I think that this set looks really cool, and I'll probably cash in some VIP points to get a discount on it. That said, I recently saw an idea saying that Lego could have released a Gotham City set in a similar style to the Ninjago City sets, and I love that idea so much. The possibilities of getting multiple (scaled-down) buildings from Batman TAS in one set, not to mention 10+ minifigs, are so much more exciting than this art set, even though I don't entirely dislike it. Especially considering that Ninjago City is on its third(?) set, just imagining three Gotham City sets in that same style would give so much potential for the best Lego Batman creation ever. That thought makes me really sad that we got this art set instead.

In in the same boat. I’m imagining what a Metropolis city set would look like or a huge Justice League Watchtower and just packed with figures. I love the Marvel buildings but I think a great epic Ninjago city build structure for the DC world would be excellent and fitting for the line.

A Gotham City set in the style of Diagon Alley would also be cool. Especially if it has buildings based on TAS.

@@brickprostudiosfilms4439 That would also be great. There are a ton of ways that they could make Lego DC fantastic, but they don't take the (frankly, obvious) opportunities.

The double-sided cape is going to be a problem if they release the Batmobile because it is the starchy material that will crumple up and deteriorate when you sit the minifigure down in the cockpit. They might even ditch it and replace it with a black spongy soft one.

Definitely. The inconsistency they have with capes has been an issue for me personally for some time now. I agree too, they may just rerelease the figure with an all black cape so he can sit down in the car.

I would love this. Even with only 12 slots I still think that would be just enough to cover the main bases.

Apparently there are rumors about smaller BtaS sets coming out at a later date. According to that rumor Catwoman will be the only exclusive figure to this set. If the rumored sets come out and do well we might get more of them in the future.

This would be good for me. The ideal and imo important figures here are Batman and Joker so to have them released in more affordable sets in the future sounds like a win to me.

I don't like the new Batman helmet generally, _but_ I think it works here. It would've been interesting to have a skin-tight cowel (like Catwoman's), but I think this looks better than the 2006; 2012; and 2015 cowls would. My only really problem with the set is the price. It should be £60 cheaper, easy (bringing it to £200). 400 more pieces doesn't make up for the deficit of characters, when compared to the Bugle. Although, neither come close to the Ninjargo sets with much greater piece count _and_ minifig count, for the same price range. I don't own any of the artwork sets, so, I may wait for the next double VIP event to get this one - to lessen the sting.

I'm in the same boat here. I actually like the cowl piece but only because I thought it would be perfect for the Animated Series, I don't think this works for Batman Returns like how it released. I also agree on the price front. It's just hard to sell this to people when you can buy a set like Daily Bugle or the Ninjago City sets that are minifig scaled buildings with plenty of figures. But I also don't have any of the art sets myself and this would be a pretty good one to get as a first timer.

$100 bucks on Facebook or my lego resale store I'll get it.... $300 hahah no. The Daily Bugle was only $250 when it came out and is a way better set. I got the Avengers tower at my resale store for only $275. Im not paying 300 for this set

Yeah once I considered the Marvel sets and the fact that they are genuine minifig scaled buildings and all those amazing Minifigures, it changed my view on this one.

I’d be willing to bet my arm the problem isn’t on lego’s end…it’s WB, the people running dc there have been pretty much incoherent for last 7 or 8 years, they also lost lego movie rights now, it sucks, but is what it is at this point, hoping for buyout n better things in future, I’m a designer launching a rebrickable page soon, I’m planning to go back and do bunch of designs from the movies, especially ZSJL which we never really got other then couple sets with wrong steppenwolf 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣🤣

I also think this isn’t all 100% on LEGO at all times, though they have said some things in the past that feel like they slightly contradict previous statements from them. Specifically the point on making products for whatever yearly releases there happen to be but only half of these DC movies actually received sets in the end. My hope is with these new movies as ludicrous as it may be to be starting again so soon, maybe we can see a revival of the theme with new DC sets that expand the world beyond Batman. Justice League and Superman returning to LEGO has me incredibly excited for the possible future.

@@RayLilySeries well I’m not too enthusiastic about new cinematic universe, and honestly I don’t think wb are either lol, I think zaslav is just trying to make company look “shiny” for universal to buy them lol, half these announcements aren’t even going to come to fruition…however that being said, THIS set specifically, has me very hopeful that maybee they could start making sets “from” the Bruce timm animated universe, batman, sups, and JL animated shows, there universally loved, and they could make some great sets from all that lore, like seeing these 4 mini figs, has me imagining the entire timm collection in mini figs lol, hopefully this set does good, but I wish they would release like a cheaper play set style of theme too, this is going to be out of reach financially for lot of people unfortunately, and it’s not kind of thing kids will really ask for, so I feel like the success of this set, and potential future of “animated” theme, is on shoulders of “dc fans” that are also AFOL’s 🤞🏼

@@illyph9963 My biggest fear with the DC brand in LEGO is that they will release sets like this that are highly desired and requested, but released at an expensive price that's out of reach for the adult audience. And so when those sets don't sell the numbers they were hoping, the takeaway won't be to make smaller DC based sets but rather, the DC brand doesn't sell. My dream right now is to see sets from these cartoons of Batman and Justice League and everything else DC and follow along the amazing run LEGO DC had from 2015-2018

The Shadowbox was great last year but this one.... I don't know... it's a nice picture but I wish they create a new cowl for the animated Batman. This just ... I don't know feel half baked.

Yeah I actually like that shadowbox set which I think is a small minority of people. I do like this cowl though, when they used it in the sets last year I wanted to use it for my own personal cartoon based figure.
