As a frequent viewer of this channel I was very surprised to this appear on my feed. James is my uncle, Joanne is my mother. I have shared the video with her and she claims there a few inaccuracies, I will clarify them once she gets back to me. This happened well before I was born, but is still often discussed amongst family. As of present day, James is still practicing psychiatry, has 3 daughters and otherwise is living a relatively normal and happy life. If anyone is interested in further details, my mother wrote a book "Lost in the Himalayas" that depicts both the overall happenings of the time and the search effort from her perspective. It was originally drafted thousands of pages long but was condensed down to a few hundred prior to publishment.

Thanks for the clarification because we all know by now that inaccuracies in You Tube videos are more the norm than the exception. As an avid mountain hiker, I look forward to hearing your corrections. And well wishes to James in all his current projects and passions.

Interesting! I have actually read that book, or a shortened version of it in a "Reader's digest" volume. Much has been left out in this video, for instance the two vultures (or if they weren't vultures - some other scavenging birds) which were waiting for him to die. I think that was the creepiest thing of all! And also that grub that he ate. Just one question: where was James' fiancée in all this? Didn''t she help in the searches in any way? Seems odd. Was it her that James eventually married?

This reminded me of the time I stumbled upon a lone American hiker along the (rebuilt) Ho Chi Minh trail in deep jungle in Central Vietnam. We took him to the nearest hospital (100km away) and he ended up in the US Consulate later. Being the only one in the road crew who can speak English, I started a conversation with him on the ride. He got a phD in History and wanted to explored the Ho Chi Minh trail by himself and to be the first Westerner to map it. He mentioned that he got lost somewhere when the trail crossed into Laos and had been wandering to get back into Vietnam for over two weeks. He almost got kidnapped by mountain bandits (perhaps just mountain tribes) and didn't know he got back into Vietnam's border until we ran into him. The point is... it doesn't matter how much you think you know about a particular subject, don't hike alone.

I’m married into the Vietnamese community, I just returned a month ago from a trip to Vietnam, tho most was in district 1 Saigon, we did spend almost a week in Da Nang, visited Cau Vang, took the “ treacherous “ long road way back. The jungle isn’t a joke, the landscape is as beautiful as it is dangerous, 5m off the road can make you lose your bearings. Side note, beautiful country, I found a “peace” in Vietnam that I didn’t know I was missing. But I still don’t like fish sauce 😂.

Hey Sean, I've watched/listened to almost every single video you've ever uploaded now. I gotta say. Amongst the flood of similar comments, I need to tell you how important what you're doing is. Your narrating is fantastic and your writing and research goes above and beyond. But the fact that you don't use any AI generated content is so refreshing. More and more content creators will enevitably give in to AI generated content, but as long as the greatest creators (like you) refuse to take part in this, we have a chance of holding onto creativity and reality both.

I found a Native American kid near death from dehydration. He and his friends got liquored up and walked out to a provincial park to raid the campsites of booze on a May long weekend. He passed out and his friends left and forgot about him. When i found him he was blue/gray and flies were flying out of his mouth. I thought he was dead, except he wasn’t entirely cold. So I dragged him back with me and put him in the flat bed of a truck in our group and took him to a hospital. He had been lost and wandering around in the woods for a few days. Years later i ran into him and he called me his hero and wouldn’t stop hugging me.

His feet did make a full recovery, he's still an active man. The Australian media handled the situation in a terrible manner. Notably, David Kessler, a renowned journalist and profile writer included criticism toward the skeptics. Specifically, Richard Carleton of 60 Minutes in his book "The Whites of Their Eyes: Profiles by David Leser". Carleton straight up accused James of fabricating his story in an interview. Real piece of work that one. You can find the specific excerpt of the book by googling "The Whites of Their Eyes James Scott".

You are right to be sceptical. We only have one person's word that the conversation even happen. There is no indication whatsoever that the searchers were looking in that area because a magic man told them to.
@littlebear274
@littlebear274 Күн бұрын
@@DPRoberts-kr8eu It sounds like they weren't, but more only because Mark said that that's where they separated and from there they looked at what direction the trail going back the way they'd come went and probably which routes he might have taken as the weather worsened (eg checking ravines and waterways, places lost people are likely to gravitate towards). I'd also discount the "exactly where the lama told them to look" because he actually seems to have told them a rather large area. Chances are that if the conversation did happen all the lama did was think about how long they were supposedly on the trail, the fact that they hadn't found him yet, and came up with an alternative place that hadn't already been searched - of course it's easy to miss someone in a search especially with that much snow, but trying a new area at that point isn't a bad suggestion.

Your storytelling is absolutely incredible! The way you bring these harrowing survival tales to life is both gripping and deeply emotional. The attention to detail and the care you take in presenting each story is truly inspiring. The tale of James Scott’s survival in the Himalayas was heart-stopping and gave me chills-especially the moment when he was finally found. It’s a testament to your skill that I was completely immersed from start to finish. Your work has inspired me to keep uncovering and sharing lesser-known stories on my channel, Mystery Sauce. Over there, I delve into tales that sit at the intersection of true crime, paranormal events, and all things weird-stories that deserve more attention but often slip under the radar. I'm struck that the lodge owners who told Jame's party that the weather would be fine that day, and likely had no chance to appraise whether his gear was sufficient, must have felt guilty forever afterwards. Hard for them to have stopped him, but this underscores the importance of looking out for wilderness hikers who might be uninformed about risks, particularly those who aren't locals, since they won't always have what might otherwise be obvious context about natural risks. I'm sure lodge owners and other smart local gatekeepers save a lot of people yearly for very similar similar situations. Lucky the happy ending happened here - powerful spiritual fuel,even for my doubtful mind. What's also pretty mind-blowing is that it seems James lost no limbs, finger, or toes to frostbite. Maybe because he was medically trained? Honestly, this would be one for medical students to study, because , among all the amazing survival things here, that's particularly striking. People have gone through much less and been lucky to survive with half their legs gone, their noses seared off, or several digits on their limb missing. As someone who seeks out interesting stories like this, that's actually impressive all on it's own, and probably worthy of study, since it was so surprisingly successful.

The fact there were bushes & bears at his altitude, means (relatively speaking) that he was stuck in a lower part of the Himalayas range. Cold as he was - he didn't have to face the problem of lower oxygen levels - that have an indirect - yet important impact in relation to frostbite. Those things may not have seemed to make much of a difference, but under the circumstances, they tipped the scales just enough for him to survive.

I don't understand the thing about helicopters searching for missing people. Shouldn't they have like an emergency kit they can drop after they spot the missing person, so that he has a better chance of making it out, before they return with the rescue team?

From January 23rd to February 2nd is 10 days, and I think the video is also wrong in saying that he first spotted it on his 30th day and then saying on his 42nd day but it’s marked at February 2nd. Just a small thing, I’m not trying to nit pick you or anything, yall just got me doing calendar math lol. I also haven’t double checked the dates of the official account of this story, but it’s probably safe to assume that some documents conflict and this just slipped through the cracks. One kilogram of stored fat is roughly 7700 kcal - that's about 3-5 days worth of energy reserve, hard to gauge how much he would've consumed when just standing still in the cave. Limiting movement could lead to as low as 1000-1500 kcal daily energy expenditure, but keeping body warm in such an environment would have to be added on top of that. Muscle can also be broken down for consumption, which I imagine he would've had plenty, considering how fit he was claimed to be. There's a common saying: Human body can survive 3 minutes without oxygen, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food. Staying in the cave is what likely saved him, as laying down doesn't consume much energy

An amazing story. Particularly towards the end where the Monk played his part. I've trekked and guided in many parts of the World. The Himalaya is the last place in the World I would hike alone unless it was somewhere I knew like the back of my hand. But it is easy to say that now I'm in my dotage. When I was younger I did a lot of risky things and if fortune had not been on my side, who knows what the opposite side of good fortune might have been. The guy was intelligent, stayed where he was, consciously used the minimum amount of intelligence he had about survival, mentally kept himself sane by thinking of his family and had a book to read.
