+Walter Kovacs what didn't you like about the movie tho? I'm just curious cause I think it's a great movie and it's the first superman movie where super mans morals are actually tested. It's not the campy upbeat type of movie and I think that it makes superman way more relatable and a deeper more fleshed out character
@dalebrush53668 жыл бұрын
River Pinkston Honestly, I kind of misspoke. I don't hate this movie - I just don't really like it, because it's not my Superman. Your reasons for liking it are completely understandable. For one I don't like all the stuff about destiny. I like Superman as a guy who uses his powers to do good, just because it's the right thing to do. Pa Kent dying in a tornado after telling Clark not to save him (and Clark not attempting to do so) really doesn't sit well with me. I like when he dies of a heart attack, which teaches Clark that even with all his powers, there are horrible things in the world that he just can't stop. Also, just generally, I don't like Pa Kent as a character in this. I don't think he should be telling Clark to just keep his secret and maybe not help people because the government will take him away or whatever. To me this goes against what Superman is about and it kind of feels more like X-Men. Traditionally, Jonathan and Martha Kent are the ones that instill Clark with his unyielding need to help people. Pretty much the entire third act is just a massive destruction sequence, on the scale of like fifty 9/11s, and we really don't see Superman helping people during this sequence - he mostly punches a bunch of people and destroys their equipment. I know he's going up against like five military-trained Kryptonians and those terraforming machines, but the writers didn't have to put him in that situation. Thing is, Superman in this scene is essentially an adult having a massive brawl to the death with other adults in a preschool. He really doesn't show any regard for property damage or human lives. There are several points where he tackles Zod through a bunch of buildings. Superman should have been doing literally everything he could to get Zod out of that city and away from civilians. At one point he does take him off-world, but Zod brings him back down and he really makes no attempt to get him back out there. When he's forced to snap Zod's neck to save that family, it doesn't ring true because we've already scene hundreds of people die, many as a result of Clark's recklessness. And after all that horrific destruction, he's standing in the rubble of Metropolis, making out (and cracking jokes) with Lois. My Superman wouldn't be doing that. My Superman is the guy that cares about preserving human life above all else. Again, it's fine that you like it and I can understand why people do. I think I'd like it a lot more if 1) It was an original character and not Superman and 2) These issues were addressed more in the film. I know BvS kind of tries to hold him accountable but it's never really wrapped up.

Success brings haters. What can I say? Thinking back there was some similar backlash against Batman Begins when Nolan brought Bats into the 21st century and out of the campy Burton & Schumaker era. Same now with Snyder bringing Supes out of the campy Donner era and into a similar Nolan-esque and "The Watchmen" feel. Well, also, some people just hate Snyder's style, and some haters are Marvel fanboys who are upset that MoS has now made it clear that DC movies will be a box office competitor to Marvel movies and not just one-off Batman movies. Some people are also upset MoS didn't have the same light, one-liner-a-minute mood a lot of summer action films have.

elgato9o - A lot of them are probably just jealous that DC movies are now challenging Marvel movies in terms of drawing crowds (and thus making huge sums of money) and getting glowing reviews from audiences. Some people want Marvel to have a monopoly on epic comic book-based movies. Or they expect DC movies to have the same style as Marvel movies and are critical that Man of Steel had a very different style (more organic and realistic and less light and fluffy) from most other superhero movies.

Zod could only be what he was genetically programmed to be, The Protector of Krypton and as such he would do everything in his power to preserve his people. Just like he said, any action he took no matter how cruel was for the greater good of his people but Kal-El killed his people so Zod had no reason to live anymore. Snyder and crew seem to have taken Zod and combined him with the Kryptonian artifact known as the Eradicator.

I love Man of Steel and the rating of "i would buy the movie on blue ray" is fair. I think that the main problem with the movie was that Zack Synder and David S Goyer didn't want to get into too much depth with the characters because they assumed everyone already knew the characters. So they didn't want to get too involved in an origin story again like in the older Superman movies.

That's not an excuse. This is a reboot of the Superman franchise. They were suppose to give Superman a proper origin story in this movie. They were suppose to give DEPTH to the character in order to make the audience care about him. Only the first 1/3 of the movie did that.

Dwayneo18 It's implied that there's plenty of places he could have sent him. But yes, he sent him to earth because he knew it had a "young yellow sun" which would make Clark into a God. He also knew that while humans are intelligent, they're still a young species and that Clark could represent as someone the human race can have hope for.

*Things that absolutely cannot be denied about Man of Steel:* 1. Hans Zimmer's score was one of the best in a superhero movie, and one of his best compositions. The Grand but Humble score fits Superman perfectly. 2. Zod was a great villain - better than all the Marvel villains (including Loki) - and better than older Superman movie villains. He was justified evil and didn't monologue, preach or mess around. 3. Action and fights were unprecedented and unparalleled by any other superhero movie. E.g. Kal vs Faora and Nam-Ek, and Kal vs Zod. 4. One of the most visually stunning CBMs of all time. Planet Krypton sequence, Terraforming scenes. If I would give it a score, it would be 8.5 or 9 out of 10. It was a great movie in my opinion. Great review Jeremy Jahns!

Basically i wanted to mention another of these big issues of man of steel that the bias people complain about and that is the damage and destruction. Cause 1. they all try to act like Superman himself caused it all even though he wasnt the one it was ZOD, but they act like Zod was a bystander in it all. Also its funny how people just started caring so much about damage even though Avengers, Darknight and Darknight rises (that came before this) and Thor 2 and Captain america 2 (that came after) had a lot of damage and destruction as well but that all just gets forgotten or ignored for Marvel and Batman yet people demand perfection for just Superman?? so yea all these minor faults that perfectionist fanboys were looking for had stopped them from enjoying a pretty great movie
@ninjastorm54010 жыл бұрын
sergio talo exactly man its so damn obvious that he wasnt the one controlling the fights. I mean how did they expect him to move two enemies with his powers out of that town? or move Zod away even though he had way more fighting experience and was dominating that fight. i just feel like people were just looking for things to bash i mean "the damage the destruction" when did most people start caring about that until now....obviously they didnt care in all the movies i mentioned and more
@realchampstudios10 жыл бұрын
You're right. I don't understand why people ignore the casualties of human life in other superhero movie, but Man of Steel gets all the hate. Favorite Superman movie: Man of Steel Great action scenes, impressive visual effects that do Superman's powers justice, and Henry Cavill having the potential to be a better Superman than Christopher Reeve. Least Favorite Superman movie: Superman IV: The Quest for Peace By far the worst Superman movie and also one of the worst movies ever made. Laughable special effects, nonsensical plot, somehow more campy than the previous Reeve movies, and Nuclear Man.

L Lawliet Yes. You're missing out. Superman is the greatest superhero of all time. I suggest you watch Superman I, Superman II and Man of Steel. Christopher Reeve is the best actor to play Superman in the movies. He not only looks like him, but also acts like him. Reeve does a fantastic job at playing the mild-mannered Clark Kent and the heroic Superman. I suggest you watch Man of Steel as well. That movie brings so much humanity to Superman and made him very relatable. Henry Cavill does a great job at playing Kal-El (not quite the Superman we know and love yet).

Did you seriously put Returns over 1 and 2?
@22steve515010 жыл бұрын
Ashwin Sridhar to me it's a better movie. The first two were great when I was 10, but they are so hokey and over the top and frankly don't age all that well. I would definitely put it above number 2, which has a lot of the idiotic comedy bits (stuffed in at the last minute after they got rid of Richard Donner halfway through in favor of a guy with half the talent) that flat out ruined number 3. To me the best single plot line in any of those movies was the idea of the love triangle that goes the opposite way everyone was expecting, with Lois's new guy being just as good as superman but without the powers. I love that they resisted making him into a jerk so she would go back to superman like most people expected. Superman loses the girl, and deservedly so. That took balls to keep something they knew would piss some people off in the story.

Why the fuck are people calling 'Man of Steel' shit?! I thought it was a great movie. We got a real Superman film for once, people. And to the haters who hate the film, I noticed none of you go into full detail on why you hate the film; you just hate it because of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Why don't you form your own opinion for once?! Jeremy did. And most of the critics criticized the movie for its pacing, lack of character development, lack of humor, and endless violence. "Endless violence" ... in a superman film is considered bad?! When Superman is fighting more than one skilled Kyrptonian you're obviously going to get a lot of violence and endless fighting. That's how it is supposed to be it's realistic in that sense.
@datlukedude10 жыл бұрын
I don't believe that Man of Steel is s**t, I just thought that it was overrated. I found that the story was very dull in most places (but not all. I liked the krypton story). The acting was good, but some of the writing was cringe inducing. Also, we all have to agree, the action could have used a few minutes cut. All the fighting was cool at first, but by the end of the film, it's again, a little dull. Actually, one bit I am ok with that most people aren't it *SPOILERS!* When Superman snaps Zods neck. I was completely fine with that. It made sense to me. *SPOILERS END!* So Man of Steel was alright. Not the best superhero film ever, just meh.

Jeremy, how can you complain about the action scenes in this movie but give age of ultron an awesometacular even though it does the same thing
@JafarAlMoosa8 жыл бұрын
Simply put, what age of ultron did wasn't very repetitive like it was in man of steel, mainly the fight against that due in Superman's hometown, then the fight against Zod, exactly the same thing, just different cities, some people might enjoy it, but I agree with Jeremy, it was excessive. Now that doesn't mean that I hated the movie just because of that, I really like the movie but like everything else in life, it's not perfect

How good would it be in the end of Man of Steel, after Superman snaps Zod's neck; After Kal-El screams he stares at his trembling hands, terrified not that he killed someone, but because he lost control. How easy it was. Lois comes to console him, he shoots up in the air and Superman goes missing for months after putting himself in exile somewhere on earth because he feels guilt. The city blames him for trashing everything in the fight. And you see Lex funding the rebuilding of Metropolis, along with his business partner, Bruce Wayne (Ben Afleck reveal), Kal-El somewhere in exile meeting up with Amazons, amazed by this God of a man. And the movie ends. Something like that. I think that would be so awesome. But thats just me.

I watched this movie earlier today for the first time in 3 years. It's so much better than I remember it. Man there's a lot that I like about this film. I love the wisdom Clark gets from both Jonathan and Jor-El, his relationship with his mother, how he interacts with Lois Lane, Henry Cavill is a great actor, the visuals are much better than I remember, and I think overall it told a really good story. In fact I'm willing to say that it succeeded in making Superman relatable, which is something I initially thought they didn't do very well with. However, towards the end, the fight scenes were very cool to look at, but ultimately that's where the film did start to lose my attention a bit, but not enough to tune me out completely. Also while I am a lot more accepting towards the flashback scenes, my only issue with them is that they don't really develop Clark as a person, it seems to constantly reiterate the fact that he "simply wants to help people". Batman Begins did this better because the flashbacks in that film actually developed Bruce as a character and really demonstrated the hero he would become. The ending with Superman killing Zod was completely senseless, in fact you can tell it was a last minute addition. What was Superman killing Zod going to prove? Honestly it didn't work, and neither did the flashback of Jonathan's death. It wasn't impactful enough to make Clark want to do greater things with his powers. But besides that, this film was really great and honestly Zack Snyder is a much better director than people give him credit for, and David Goyer's writing honestly isn't as bad as people think. There were only a few moments where the dialogue was cheesy, but most of it I had no issue with. Hell even the pacing is better than I remember. Yeah bottom line, really like this film and it was a great kick-off to the DCEU

This exactly why I prefer DC. Because they actually make you think about how these heroes and villains have repercussions in the real world. The film was a complete package and an epic journey from start to finish. I love the graphic novels used, the properly executed punchlines, and the background of the characters introduced. This movie did a great job showing the sheer power and destructive capabilities of Kryptonians under a yellow sun. Bro I am insanely in love with this cinematography and combat sequence. Notice how Faora didn't bash Clark's masculinity or invoke any "girl power" nonsense? And still, she came off as a powerful female character in the movie. That's good writing by Goyer, the Nolan brothers, and Zack Snyder. Also brilliant acting by Crowe, Shanon, and Cavil.

Everyone keeps saying there's too much destruction of the city. Really? You get two guys with this much power. What else would you expect? That's like saying you'd expect a bull to be in a China shop and expect it not to break anything. I guess people would prefer this movie to be as unrealistic as Power Rangers where they always conveniently fight the monster in a giant empty field or a rock quarry or something so there's never any destruction to the city.
@mathematics180011 жыл бұрын
Exactly, anyone complaining about this movie should automatically indicate that they are a moron.
@jedisfedora11 жыл бұрын
I think they could have had Superman at least try to take the fight to an unpopulated area. It took Zod a while to start flying and the others didn't do any at all, so it wouldn't be too difficult for him. Also, as far as Mythbusters experiments go, a bull wouldn't break much in a china shop. Just saying.
@mathematics180011 жыл бұрын
jedisfedora Mythbusters are not scientists, go fuck yourself. On top of that next time you find yourself trying to relocate a super villain with extensive military training, let me know how that goes...moron.
@jedisfedora11 жыл бұрын
mathematics1800 That military training was only for armed and unarmed combat on Krypton and doesn't account for much when he just discovered his powers a couple hours ago against someone who's spent his whole life perfecting his use of them. The training only helped Zod to figure out how to use them faster than Kal was able to, it doesn't mean he could use them as effectively. If Kal was able to grab Zod just once he would easily be able to fly them both out of the city, albeit initially before Zod would figure out how to do the same and bring the fight back into somewhere populated. I think there definitely should be destruction in Metropolis caused by the fighting, but having Superman not even try to get Zod away from the people he believed he was meant to protect is illogical to his character. However, I will give you a counterpoint by saying that the colonization of other planets might have first introduced Kryptonians to these powers, so it is possible that Zod and his team received special training; but that's highly unlikely because the movie didn't make any real mention of this and they made it clear that he was experiencing at least some of these powers for the very first time on Earth. Don't act like having half of a city and small town reduced to rubble is any more realistic or reasonable than taking the fight (at least temporarily) to an open field. It's just more entertaining.
@mustangsilver1611 жыл бұрын
jedisfedora As far as the Smallville fight goes. I don't think he could of got them away from the town if he tried. It wasn't a fair fight to begin with. Even though he could fly and they couldn't, it was still 2 against 1. I don't think he could just pick one of them up and fly away. Every time he went after one of them, the other would interfere. When you're in a battle like that and you don't even have any training, you really don't have time to think. You only got two choices. One: let a few people die and stop the bad guys or 2: focus too much on where you're flying and all your surroundings that you get distracted and easily taken out.

Frederick Erebor Do you even follow the news? Several DC characters are getting their own solo movies. We're even getting one this year: Wonder Woman.
@MrChaotic48 жыл бұрын
Frederick Erebor Technically this is the first reboot for Superman and the second for Batman since Superman Returns was a direct sequel to Superman II ignoring 3 and 4 (thankfully)
@MrChaotic48 жыл бұрын
Frederick Erebor Also, here's my argument. DC learned their lesson after Green Lantern bombed at the box office. Nobody is going to flock to the theatres to see a lesser hero like Green Lantern. So they needed to go with the bigger known heroes like Batman and Superman knowing those would make the money for them to fund the other films.

I was at the edge of my seat when I first watched Man of Steel. Absolutely LOVED IT! What also got me was, while waiting for the end credits or the SCENE, it was very nice just seeing what they did show, the HOPE we all hope for. I hope that Ben, Henry, Zack and company can add into this world and create something that will never ever be lost.

I think the second trailer showed the tone of the film. It showed how distant Superman will ever be from a normal human, how powerful he is and in the film we always see the peoples point of view of Superman. I think whenever you think "OK that's too much" it was intended. I like Zack Snyder not because he is visually brilliant, but always add a level of immersion in his films, even though that sometime comes off as poor choices, the impression you get, is what you should feel being in the movie not watching(or evaluating) it.

This movie is the one that got me interested and to love Superman. I thought Superman was a overpowered, Gary-Stu superhero before this movie. Now, I love him, very much. So, this movie, in my opinion, was a wonderful movie.

Jeremy. I think you are overall the best movie critic out there, but how can you give the first Thor movie an "Awesometacular" and Man of Steel a "Buy on blueray"?... I mean you even gave Mad Max Fury road a "Buy on blueray" are you seriously telling me that you could look me dead in the eye and say that the first Thor movie, was better than Man of Steel? come on...

A good third of Thor was dogshit material to me. Bless Hemsworth for selling a romance with a mannequin. All the best parts were in the beginning, like Jotunheim.

Most of the movie was exploring Clark's personality. The last 45 minutes were dedicated to the hard-hitting action. The plot was fine, Zod's intentions are clear, you understand how Superman has to step into the world, and the movie is actually very plot driven.

_1. Zack Snyder’s Superman Man of Steel is and was epic, one of the best movies of all time, a very detailed, potent, in-depth look for the beginning of any superhero especially Superman; I have to give it up for the director Zack Snyder, the writers, and the producers, because it is very hard to write a story line, to direct and produce a movie for a character like Superman with Godlike powers, the first question is what kind of story can you have for a being like that; They’ve manifested a superman whose character wasn’t just about having superhuman powers And saving every fucking thing but a being of morality, having Godlike powers, went to use them and for what purpose, someone who has “the potential to be a force for good”_ _2. Man of Steel was very realistic very grounded and reality-based, the biggest issue that people had with this film was the distraction of the city, but if this was to actually happen in our world yes it would be no holds bar of destruction; this movie had no red tape’s in groundedness and realism as to what could actually happen and most likely would._ _3. Compared to any other Superman movie 🎥 this would be considered rated R. This was a Superman movie the world was not ready for but need, unfortunately moviegoers are still in tuned and corrupted with a Disney tone boring family like movie where nobody dies or gets mortally wounded [director Joss Whedon], moviegoers are still adopted to superman saving a fucking cat out of a tree._ _This superman is faced with Morley difficult situations that we here in the real world also face. To write a way out for character lacks depth, potency, and realism, such as most of the marvel movies with that Disney tone affect._

- My Favourite Superman Films - (Best to Worst) 1. Superman: The Movie - A masterpiece of epic proportions. 2. Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut - The definitive vision of the ideal sequel. 3. Superman II - Not as good as Donner's version, but still awesome. 4. Man Of Steel - Epic, intense and emotional. The best thing about this movie, is that it cannot be compared to the other versions; it's its own unique thing, and I'm seeing the sequel. 5. Superman IV: The Quest For Peace - Bad effects, laughable acting, stupid dialogue and a choppy story... but I actually liked it. For me, this movie's so bad it's good. 6. Superman III - Better made than Superman IV, but a bit boring at times. Christopher Reeve played the evil Superman to perfection and I also liked Richard Pryor. Take this film for what it's worth, it's a guilty pleasure. 7. Superman Returns - 76% - Rotten Tomatoes? 72/100 - Metacritic? What crack were the critics smoking when they saw this? All I saw was a boring, cringe worthy, CGI filled rehash of the original movie (I'm not joking, it rips off the first Superman scene for scene). So yeah I like all the live action Superman movies... except this one.

Least favorite Superman movie: IV without hesitation, Quest for Peace was just horribly done (though Superman III is a close 2nd). I love MOS & I agree the action sequences dragged a bit, but aside from that.. it was pretty cool

I enjoyed MOS but had a couple of issues with the plot holes. If anyone can help explain some things to me that would be great. Here are my issues: 1. How can Jor El defeat Zod in a hand to hand combat when Zod is engineered to be a general and Jor El is engineered to to be a scientist. I can see Jor El out thinking Zod but never expected to give Zod the smack down. --- I think Jor El was able to fight well because they cast Russel Crow and wanted to use the man's talent. But to me it didn't fit for his character. 2. Jor El explain to Clark how Zod tried to over throw the government on Krypton. What would make Clark think Zod would keep his word? Why didn't Clark consult with the Jor El matrix for another solutions. This was a character flaw in MOS. It made him a shallow character and not enough depth to show how he'll deal with solving problems. 3. Why would Zod want to change the atmosphere of earth to match Krypton. As explain by Jor El, earth's atmosphere is much better for Kryptonians because it nourishes their body and makes them stronger. Tell me what person wouldn't want that? 4. At the end when Zod was shooting heat vision at the family, why didn't they run when Superman was holding his head? I believe Superman held Zod long enough for them to run instead the family just stood there crying. I'm sure If I watch it again, there will be more things that stick out. If anyone can help answer some of those questions that would make the movie much better for me. Maybe I just missed something.

1. Superman was able to beat Zod because he had spent more time adjusting to earth's atmosphere. 2. Superman felt that Zod couldn't be trusted which is why he brought the USB device on board to access his Father's help. 3. Zod didn't wan't all the Kryptonians to have to spend their lives adjusting to the atmosphere.
@bruce54769 жыл бұрын
1. Jor-El is Superman's dad. Not superman/Clark. I was referring to the fight he and Zod fought on Krypton when Jor-El beat Zod on hand to hand combat. 2. How did he know that the USB drive can take over the ship? As far we understood, it was just a download of his Jor-El's consciousness not an override command on all space ships. 3. Zod and was able to adjust to Earth's atmosphere after going to Earth for like 20 minutes. Are you telling me you wouldn't want Superman's power by giving 20 minutes to adjust to Earth's atmosphere. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed MOS. I am a BIG Superman fan. I've watch this movie 8 times already. The more I watch it the more things I see with issues thats all.

1. Oh right. Didn't read that question carefully. I This part bugs me too. Apparently Jor-El is multi-talented. Perhaps he used science and logic to fight the same way that Sherlock Holmes does in his newest movies. 2. In the HISHE cartoon Superman goes directly to Jor El instead of surrendering himself to Zod. And then immediately destroys Zod and his minions with the Phantom drive. My guess is that in the actual movie, Superman thinks there is a chance that Zod might not have hostile intentions so he surrenders himself to Zod. He brings the command key with him in case Zod does turn out to be hostile. And you're right. The movie never really explains how Superman knew how helpful Jor El could be. I think the audience is supposed to be surprised by ghost Jor El's abilities.
@MichaelTaylor-fn7zl9 жыл бұрын
3. Not all Kryptonians would be engineered as generals like Zod. It was Zod's training as a general which allowed him to adapt so fast.
@bruce54769 жыл бұрын
I agree that not Kryptonians are engineered like Zod, However majority of the Kryptonians with Zod were engineered to be solders, so they should be able to adapt just as quickly. That aside, it would still be better for the future generations of Kryptonians if earth kept its atmosphere. If you really think about it, it only takes one "Superman" to take over earth (Zod). This will give plenty of time for the other Kryptonians to adjust. I'm just saying if Zod was really thinking about the future of his people, in the long term it would benefit his people more.

Everyone is on about too much destruction.........Jeez.....It's a flippin hostile takeover by a super powerful alien race, what would you expect? Zod and Supes agree to go in the desert, shake hands, tell each other may the best man win and then have a refereed fistfight???? This is why professional critics should stick to dramas and lgbtq movies and leave the normal stuff alone.
