Another good one. Thanks! What he's talking about at 7:05 is exactly how I began, as well. I had a double deck boombox and I figured out that if I plugged the headphones into the mic jack in the back one side of the headphones could act as a microphone. I'd take looped rhythms I made from existing songs' instrumental and breakdown parts (Egyptian Lover, Paul Hardcastle, Kraftwerk, etc) on deck one and then simultaneously record that and vocals or new percussion (chopsticks on plates or cracker tins) or anything else and bounce it down to deck 2. By repeating this I essentially had a multitrack studio in a boombox. Results were crude but it was a start. This was back in 84.

Wow! What an amazing interview was that? With great visuals too! I've always considered the first Man Parrish album as one of my all time favourites. When I was 17 in '77 I left home to move to London to find myself & enjoy the disco world that was blooming around me & I never looked back. I can so relate to Man's story, as musically, it's much similar to mine. Growing up in the the UK rather than the Bronx was obviously two worlds apart but our hearts were in the same place. In '78 I took myself off to New York on holiday so that I could live life in the heart of disco. Certainly opened my eyes more than a lot but in a brilliant way. I've learnt so much just by listening to this interview, not only on how ruthless the record companies can be but also tie up a few things missing in my musical knowledge. I've been to a few of the places he mentions & I've met some of the faces too. When 'Hip Hop Be Bop' came out, it was so fresh & was undoubtedly one of the first major tracks coming from the new music electro generation going on here. As a white gay man it was finally cool that London's gay clubs & bars were finally playing more of the breakdance music that I liked, as in Afrika Bambaataa, So Solid Crew, C Bolt etc. The MP album was another step all together, full of wacky, ear bending space jams with no bad tracks either, which was a rarity. Good to hear that he's still going strong & I will be definately checking out that new album after this. Thank you guys for this.

My first 'synth' was a RadioShack organ too. Though being Rugby, Warwickshire it was of course the legend that was Tandy! Fun fact: The other day I found a condenser-mic I bought from there in 80/81. I only just discovered it came with two AA batteries (still sealed). I tested them and 40 years later they are fine... That is witchcraft!!! 🏆🎩

This is an awesome interview I was 13 years old in 1983 when New Wave, Hip Hop, Disco, Rock were becoming big enough that I evolved into a songwriter, poet and storyteller with a love for visual art and at 53 going on 54 I am ready to add my voice to the creative process. Thank you and Have a wonderful holiday.
