Man sentenced to 19 years for stealing bread bounces back from prison to become mayor

@@M0butu I mean the MC isn't even a bad person, he stole bread to eat. he didn't harm anyone. dude wasn't a violent offender, and 19 years in prison for stealing bread is incredibly unjust. it's literally not even grand theft, that shit is a misdemeanor maybe 3 to 6 months in jail or 1 year probation now. It's not even enough to be reported to employers today. We have to really put this shit into context because this is set in the early modern era. dude was being treated like he was a violent felon. what the warden did was completely unjust. The warden isn't about justice he says he is but isn't. he knew the MC's rap sheet and knew he had no priors. It's actually damn near irrational what he did to the MC upon release. Even for the laws of the era in France. there's a reason why the french revolution happened.

and the early modern era was a time period where the wealthy had a bunch of unjust laws. In England the same crime would mean death by hanging, which is insane. There's a reason why a lot of western countries went the opposite direction with how they enforce laws starting in the 20th century. Though today isn't perfect, in the US you can get arrested for resisting arrest. You may not have even resisted or moved, but the cop will add it as the charge to justify putting you into cuffs. why? often because it's a power trip. so unjust things still happen. this film is about how unjust regimes eventually do get overthrown, bad situations can last a long time, but they aren't forever. There's a limit in society to how bad things can get before people had enough.

Didn't matter. Back then, the legal authorities would let a person go with that annotation to their release. They always believed, once a criminal, always a criminal. It really wasn't until the US implemented various policies in the legal system that true absolution for past crimes became a thing.
