The Mafia and candy stores/sweet shops have a history. I think Mooney did a show on the candy store, now a deli, that Murder Inc. did their business out of. Apparently the boss, Abe Reles, and some of his friends who were later the core of Murder Inc. hung out in the same candy store as kids and the owner knew them most of their lives. The Sweet Shop was just continuing the tradition. As I recall the American drug smuggler (played by Tony Lo Bianco) who set up the American end in "The French Connection" (which was closely based on fact) runs a small Brooklyn candy store as a front. He gets burned when Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider see him partying with big time hoods at the Copacabana. A little out of character for the owner of a small candy store. That supposedly happened in real life too.

13:42 You say the sweet shop was run by James LaForte, the son of a Gambino captain Joseph Laforte. Many are unaware that Joseph LaForte was the REAL owner of the famous Ravenite Club. Most people think Carlo Gambino was the first owner, then Neil Dellacroce, then John Gotti. However, the money man, the man with the actual deed was Joe LaForte who was a super huge earner for the Gambinos for many years. He let these guys use and front the club while he stayed back, way back behind the scenes. At the time of the above events the Ravenite as you know was the Gambinos chief hangout, and again it was owned and controlled by LaForte, not the more famous bosses.

Why the shooter was wearing tux pants and white shirt over jeans (and probable T shirt)? Two possibilities. (1) If he failed he was dressed and ready-for-burial. (2) If he got away he could run by the tux rental place, return it and get his deposit back. Let's just say he was thinking outside the dead box. He knew he might lose his life, everybody dies, blood and bullet holes on a tux depreciates real fast, BUT to lose his deposit on a rented tux while alive was unthinkable!

I think this is one of those stories, you just don’t hear about unless…….you’re subscribed to “Mooney’s Dash Cam”! Hard to believe that Jeffrey could be that stupid to attempt a hit on Gotti in front of his own hang-out where all his “associates” are, AND miss his target!!! 🎯 Senseless crime against innocent people is horrific, but this one I’m actually indifferent about. Great job reporting this and I liked that fast forward driving, where you pause to show the street signs. Nice touch! And commendable sidewalk parking! It’s like your personal reserved spot now!

Yeah Man I saw your fire hydrant!!! LOL Way to go the extra yard by jumping on the roof, that bird sound you captured was excellent, you really captured the feel of the neighborhood, where the incident took place. Didn't Paul Castellano live in Todt Hill area? Maybe they were trying to send a message, they may have not been sure if the shooter was involved with someone within their family.

One of these days we'll get a Mooney dash cam of Mooney dashing from these Mafia hang outs. Because unknown to him it's still inhabited by mobsters. 🤪 Just kidding. .. Great stuff as always. Your videos give great visual layouts and feel of where all this stuff went down. Great job!! And thanks for the time and effort you put into this stuff!

I find it more than a little ironic that both the Bergin Hunt & Fish Club (at least half of it) and Roy DeMeo's Gemini Lounge are now both churches. Another very interesting story. I know Vinny "The Chin" Gigante, probably the most powerful mobster in the US for many years and the actual head of the Genovese Family, wanted Gotti dead for violating the rules in killing Castellano the way he did but Gigante would never have been involved in such an amateurish and stupid attempt. Probably the guy got high and convinced himself he could become a big shot by killing Gotti. He might have remembered that Gigante himself established his reputation around thirty years before that by attempting to kill Frank Costello, who retired shortly afterwards. Of course he would have ignored that the hit was sanctioned and ordered by Genovese himself. Druggies are like that. Who knows? Another great job. Give the truck a pat on the hood for me. It put up with all of that driving in traffic.

They say Chin was even involved in stuff that happened in Philly when they killed a boss. Bodies were popping up all over after that.

Beginning about 20-25 years ago, you'd be lucky to find any Italians still left in this neighborhood. I grew up and hung out there throughout the 70s and 80s. Then again, same can be said for many once-Italian neighborhoods in NYC.
