The angle of the shot and caliber make it possible that it just bounced around the periphery of the brain before exiting in the back. If it did hit the brain, it likely only grazed the edge. Bullets that travel *through* the brain do immense damage even at a low caliber. You can survive shots that go through the brain, but this guy didn't seem to have any neurological issues at all which would be unheard of.
