honestly probably the most harmless gacha addict out there, hes not destroying his or anyone else's life with reckless spending hell the people around him don't even know how much hes spent meaning hes still paying for his necessities and such so hes not putting himself in debt he just throws all his extra money into the game which you can't really fault him if he is happy and enjoys it cause he clearly gets his money's worth in pure playtime the man plays the game every waking moment so hes probably got years of actual play hours logged in the game.

I mean, I disagree. (I agree that WSJ potentially trying to shame or ridicule the guy is wrong or off, and in that I agree with asmon and everybody, but just going off what I saw in the first few frames, he says how he plays everywhere, and spends a lot of money on it, I'm not sure if that's so great). There's regular fandom which is crazy but positive, and then there's this P2W F2P purgatory where lost souls wander looking for meaning, playing 10-12 hours a day because the game is intentionally created and designed to maximize your playtime, and to give you minimum reward for each individual battle, making you have to try to get your 100 battles in, or whatever the meta and min-max stat is. A lot of gamers are optimization focused, but the problem is in a F2P title, the thing being optimized is time. This is in some ways why dailies are so annoying, not only do they have the tomagocha mechanic of forcing you to play every day even when you don't want to, forcing you to adopt a routine, but they also create this need that if you want to get everything, you have to adopt that routine and to play optimally, you have to do this annoying quest that you probably don't even find that fun, and even if you did, it doesn't matter, you're never given the choice or ability to decide if it's a good choice or not, you're forced to do it, and that's why it's not fun. In my opinion.

I doubt he would regret it. If you have that much disposable income and you make the choice to spent it on whatever, you chalk it up to entertainment dollars and move on. The reason I do not like this kind of monetization in video games, however is because it is predatory towards people that do NOT have the disposable income by letting them play for free, and then dangling things in front of them that cost real life money. A lot of people without the self control can get themselves into financial trouble this way...and the games prey on them.
@Vermonstered
@Vermonstered Жыл бұрын
@@cyradusI don't really agree with that as it relies upon the min/max 'necessity.' Play the game without the idea you're going to be the first, best or dominant and you'll likely be just fine. You're unlikely to make a ton of content from your gaming but if the point is it fulfill blocks of time with entertainment there's nothing that says you must pay for every accelerator or skin or bonus. Anything in the digital entertainment realm is at the mercy of the server, it's all a true value of zero. For people like this is a net negative even if we want to justify it for him. Think of how useful he could be if he became this obsessed with anything remotely productive.

@@zxa03 He doesnt have a disposal income. Look at his house, hes probably at most upper middle class in their country specifically. In America or my country Australia he would be middle class. He genuinely just spent 70k because he decided it was a better investment than something meaningful. He most likely would regret it if a day comes where he no longer wants to play the game.

To put things into perspective, suicide is the leading cause of death in Japan for young adults. If this guy is happy with his gacha game, isn't hurting himself or anyone around him while enjoying it, is clearly very invested in his hobbies based on other things we see in his room, then the dude is doing quite well all things considered.

There's also someone who wanted to kill himself just because he can't get the character Merlin (Meta support during that time) in this game after spending 260K yen (idk in dollar)💀

Fate is also more than 8 years old in japan, thats less than 10K a year. There are worse "normal" hobbies, like mans at 20$ a day on FGO average give or take thats better than most "coffee" drinker peoples starbucks habits. yep $24 a day. hes actually beating the statistical odds by 30% and the pitty by half for his account's collection

Like that comment said, if he makes his own money and is happy the way he spends his money while not hurting anyone then Idm. I've never spent money on alchohol or make up, I rarely spend money on clothes or furniture. I did spend money on games (not this much though), which made me happy. People who judge what other people spend their money on should just keep their mouth shut, like I don't bash on those who spend tons on alchohol, gucci bags and make up. Do what makes you happy, but avoid hurting others in the process.

Honestly, this is just the Wall Street Journal looking for a clickbait title for views. If I wanted to write up an expose on how modern games use gacha mechanics and other predatory, underhanded anti-consumer tactics to influence people into becoming permanent whales for their content, I wouldn't go to a rich otaku who lives an actively stable life with a fairly well-to-do background who also has an actual job he can use to pay for his hobby, I'd go to the Boondocks or some backwoods suburb in American and interview struggling families with kids addicted to games and who literally steal from their parents, friends, and family to pay for their addiction. WSJ has no class and have the courage and boldness of rats living in the sewer under a rich estate.
