I mean, I disagree. (I agree that WSJ potentially trying to shame or ridicule the guy is wrong or off, and in that I agree with asmon and everybody, but just going off what I saw in the first few frames, he says how he plays everywhere, and spends a lot of money on it, I'm not sure if that's so great). There's regular fandom which is crazy but positive, and then there's this P2W F2P purgatory where lost souls wander looking for meaning, playing 10-12 hours a day because the game is intentionally created and designed to maximize your playtime, and to give you minimum reward for each individual battle, making you have to try to get your 100 battles in, or whatever the meta and min-max stat is. A lot of gamers are optimization focused, but the problem is in a F2P title, the thing being optimized is time. This is in some ways why dailies are so annoying, not only do they have the tomagocha mechanic of forcing you to play every day even when you don't want to, forcing you to adopt a routine, but they also create this need that if you want to get everything, you have to adopt that routine and to play optimally, you have to do this annoying quest that you probably don't even find that fun, and even if you did, it doesn't matter, you're never given the choice or ability to decide if it's a good choice or not, you're forced to do it, and that's why it's not fun. In my opinion.

I doubt he would regret it. If you have that much disposable income and you make the choice to spent it on whatever, you chalk it up to entertainment dollars and move on. The reason I do not like this kind of monetization in video games, however is because it is predatory towards people that do NOT have the disposable income by letting them play for free, and then dangling things in front of them that cost real life money. A lot of people without the self control can get themselves into financial trouble this way...and the games prey on them.
@Vermonstered Жыл бұрын
@@cyradusI don't really agree with that as it relies upon the min/max 'necessity.' Play the game without the idea you're going to be the first, best or dominant and you'll likely be just fine. Like that comment said, if he makes his own money and is happy the way he spends his money while not hurting anyone then Idm. I've never spent money on alchohol or make up, I rarely spend money on clothes or furniture. I did spend money on games (not this much though), which made me happy. People who judge what other people spend their money on should just keep their mouth shut, like I don't bash on those who spend tons on alchohol, gucci bags and make up. Do what makes you happy, but avoid hurting others in the process.

There’s a game called rise of kingdoms and players have spent millions on those games

FGO great game. Don't need to spend at all. As F2P you can get at least 1 or 2 copies of every big meta changing character.

Saw a clip here about this kid that drained his parents’ entire life savings ona mobile game and they were beating him up in a cybercafe. I play empires & puzzles and I’m sure there are people in that game who spend shit ton of money (on something that will return nothing on their investment). More power to em though

Honestly, this is just the Wall Street Journal looking for a clickbait title for views. If I wanted to write up an expose on how modern games use gacha mechanics and other predatory, underhanded anti-consumer tactics to influence people into becoming permanent whales for their content, I wouldn't go to a rich otaku who lives an actively stable life with a fairly well-to-do background who also has an actual job he can use to pay for his hobby, I'd go to the Boondocks or some backwoods suburb in American and interview struggling families with kids addicted to games and who literally steal from their parents, friends, and family to pay for their addiction. WSJ has no class and have the courage and boldness of rats living in the sewer under a rich estate.

When I started dokkan in 2019 I bet I spent 4 or 5 grand that year then in 2020 about 500 and now I’m f2p. So I boosted my account and now I’m good and still have a insane collection.
