I’ve lived in jungle for years and I’ve heard from community members that apparently suicides happen all the time at this station. If you ever walk through this station to get to an exit you know how narrow it is and how close the yellow line is. Very scary at night from your peripheral view as the poles along with the station shelters make it harder to see up ahead. You never know who can pop up from the side so I always keep my head on a swivel at YD station. I think the suicides occur mostly at the subway entrance that’s on the opposite side of the mall because this side of the subway station is always unattended. Also, the train coming in from Wilson speeds in very quickly which also concerning Heard from a ttc worker that was fixing the presto gates one day that a lot workers don’t like to work on that side of the station late at night because of the uptick in robberies (a lot of youth crimes), vandalism / fare evasion of the presto gates (people barging through the gates breaking the doors, homeless people sleeping in the station shelters with the benches , people smoking weed inside, harassment, people peeing on the tracks, even yorkdale park itself is a public washroom full of feces and urine etc.) Luckily I have not seen any suicides up close thankfully but I happened to be heading the work the day this happened and saw the workers cleaning up the blood. There was no service from Sheppard West to Yorkdale so I had to call a $30 lyft to work. Tons of train suicides downtown too as it gets cold and people go in the tunnels to get away from the weather 😢 TTC delays all the time because someone is in the tunnels, jumped on the tracks or hiding their belongings on the side tracks

A friend of mine used to push trains back and forth on the Bloor Danforth line for 20 years. He says drivers get two months off automatically if someone jumps in front of their train. Some drivers never recover from the trauma. Others are fine with it. One guy had 6 jumpers in his career, never took a day off. They called him the Terminator

This has been happening forever with the subway, Go train and Via rail. Usually a suicide. They don’t report it but now with cell phones, people are getting photos. Unfortunately, Toronto has gotten much more unsafe and people are targeting others, either by pushing or stabbing. Such a shame as it used to be such a great and safe city to live in. We need Mental health facilities where people can be safely taken care of. I live in Kingston, Ontario and we are badly in need of this plus more homes for the disadvantaged.

I can't say for sure but it looks to me like he was trying to climb out but didn't make it in time. Something people should know is that if for some reason you find yourself on the tracks with a train coming right at you, do not try to climb out. Instead you should go into the area underneath where the platform overhangs the tracks. It might be scary but you will be perfectly safe there until you can be rescued.
@annmariebusu992418 күн бұрын
Many people jump in front of the train for decades. It has left many ttc workers traumatized. The news doesn't report many of them because they are afraid more people would copy. I believe there is a list of these events at the ttc headquarters that the workers can view. Not sure if they still get to read them.

What's scary as well is that as somebody who has been taking transit for years, I can speculate as to who it was with you saying crack heads. the usual characters. And yes there is room for error but there should be no way to decipher who it was. it should come as shocj and dismay, but there are shady characters who end up in the transit system who im sure we all know about if we have been taking transit long enough. it shouldnt be that way.

TTC for years do not publish because not to encourage these incidents, how you can tell if you are using the train and you see white sand etc in the tracks, you know some one jumped, ossington and bloor street was popular for that in the 60’s 70’s, they came from the mental institution at ossington ave and 999 king st west, which is now 1000 king west, I believe, correct me if I’m wrong, I stopped using TTC years ago, in fear of. I wouldn’t be surprised.

I remember the address of the mental institution was 999 Queen Street West. It was often used in jokes when I was growing up in Toronto. Yes, you are correct about the change of the number in the address from 999 to 1000. I think, 999 was too much associated with the address of the former occupant of the site. As kids we used to jokingly accuse each other of “belonging in 999.”

He stands in traffic and asks for money and mumbles, but he's all good, I buy him coffees, Large 2 cream 4 sugars, he drools too and walks shuffling his feet slow, he's addicted, but he's still a man, decent, harmless and sometimes I get a smile from him and always a Thank You for the coffee He has grey hair and tall and I really hope its not him God Bless and May He rest in Peace

I have seen this very often working at ttc since the age of 18. The news is not allowed to post it. It's nothing new. Every station has a body bag on the platform. 10 years ago a family of five did it at union on Christmas day. And yes black people do jump too.

I dont think this subway death went "Under-reported" because of the TTC or media's lack of empathy. Rather, they dont want to "trigger" repeat behaviours among the mental health survivors. So their "response" is to keep a lid on it / minimize the damage.

Happens very often in England too. My aunt was a customer service ticket agent at an above ground station on the outskirts of London. Said one day she noticed a young girl pacing erratically on the inside track (there are sometimes three tracks on the Tube in London). The inside track is for express fast trains not stopping in the station. She went over there and pushed her down and SAT on top of her telling her she is not jumping on her watch. Concerned commuters called the police and they came and got the young miss hopefully to get her help.

For many reasons it's not publicized which is a good thing bc we never want to make this commonplace or numb folks even more than they are to these kinds of things. Until we know for sure people should not speculate bc this could have been an accident, but the truth is the month of December is the month with the highest suicides on the TTC bc a lot of ppl are feeling very lonely, sad & depressed around the holidays, so let's be kind to each other bc we never know what ppl are going through. My father committed suicide, so it's not a nice thing or sonething that should be made public for the respect of everyone involved, and I hope whoever this person is their soul is at peace, and everyone who saw this gets the help they need to deal with trauma.🙏🏽 God bless and if anyone ever is thinking they want to end it bc they feel no hope I'm always here for anyone who needs a friend. 🙏🏽❤
