Today I'm taking The Canadian sleeper train for 97 hours across the North American continent from Toronto all the way to Vancouver on the Pacific coastline. I'll be travelling in Prestige class which is the most luxurious First Class sleeper cabin offered by Via rail but the excitement only starts with my ensuite bedroom. Join me as we explore the Park Car with it's private lounge, elegant dining carriage serving up hearty meals and of course the dome cars! We'll go from forests, to great plains to the Rocky Mountains all over the next 5 days and I'll be taking you along for the ride.

As a child of 10, I was very fortunate enough to have actually taken this trip with my parents. I didn't know it at the time, but it was in the first class cabin. Amazing trip. At 45 years old, I can still remember just about everything.

I'm from Australia, and I took this trip back in 1990, and it was absolutely amazing. The facilities now are more polished than they were then of course, but the experience was something that has stayed with me. Watching the mountains from under the glass top carriages was a fantastic life experience. Thank you for bringing it back ! I love Canada, the people are so warm and friendly, and so much natural beauty and wildlife.

Oh, this brings back so many memories. I've travelled back and forth across Canada by this train several times and the trip is glorious. But I do remember how for several days after I'd suddenly find myself moving as though I was still on the train even while I was lying in bed, or sitting in a chair, at home, and was actually quite sedentary.

I’ve gone coast to coast, north to south, on Amtrak, but I wouldn’t call it the optimal luxury train, no matter what size sleeper you have. I did notice the same thing you did: I was a while in getting my land legs back after my trip. I’d definitely do it again, though; the train is a unique travel experience.

I've traveled on "The Canadian" 51x since 1964. I'm a "train-a-holic" with over 250,000 km by train since 1955 mostly here in Canada but also in Australia (1987) & UK (1990) when BritRail still existed. Cheers from Vancouver. BTW back in the 1950-70s the trip only took 67 hrs from Toronto-Vancouver as it had priority over freight trains.

About 5-6 years ago I took the Canadian cross country and it left Toronto in the evening (10:00 PM) and got to Winnipeg during the day for a 4-5 hour stop. The Canadian actually arranged for a 3 hour bus tour of Winnipeg. Too bad they changed their arrival time in Winnipeg. The tour was wonderful and quite unique. The entire 4 day was unforgettable.

The old schedule was fantastic for my area and I used the train lots during univeristy days. The newer schedule was setup to better serve tourists travelling on the train for its departure and arrival times into Toronto and Vancouver. The reasoning is that the train has become a major tourist attraction so they did the schedule to better align with internation flights.

Way back in the "dark ages" of 1969, my mother, older brother and sister and I were moving from Timmins in nothern Ontario to Vancouver. I was 11 years old at the time. We were supposed to have gotten 2 staterooms on the train but, due to some mix-up, we only got one. So, there 4 of us in a tiny room with 2 beds for almost 4 days. Those 4 days took an eternity in my young mind.

I loved the historical commentaries throughout the trip. I drove across Canada about 15 years ago in summer, it was nice but very tiring and somewhat nerve racking on the Trans Canada at night... so afraid of hitting a deer or moose.. abrupt end to a vacation. I have a family of 5 as well so I know that pain. When you factor in that it is your transportation, hotel, and meals all in one the price makes more sense but by no means is it cheap. Berths on the Canadian, are a much more affordable sleeper class option and is what I usually target when travelling for the balance in price and amenities

In 1963 and 1964 we lived in Churchill and we took the train a couple times to go back to Edmonton to visit family . Still have great memories of our train ride and how so nice was the porter who helped mom with us young ones there was 3 of us. I would love to do a train trip again.

I took the Canadian from Vancouver to Toronto in 2012 and at the conclusion of the trip I told people the best part was a three-way tie between the views, the food, and the incredible staff. Before I left so many people said the prairies would be boring but I thought they were stunningly beautiful. Always love a dirt road that goes straight all the way to the horizon, and how big the sky is.

I’ve done this quite a few times. I loved going through the eerie Northern Manitoba swamp in the dark, early dawn, replete with steam raising from the land and one train personnel told me we went through a certain part of the Rockies at night because it was so terrifying to the passengers during the day. And it was! We were literally snaking the edge of the mountain, the train light casting shadows on the mountain. When I used to go it was Via. First class was a full ‘sleeper’, and it took three nights and four days. Nothing better than being in bed as the scenery goes by. Very cozy.

Thank you so much for making and posting this video! I was fortunate enough to travel in the Prestige class in 2017 as part of my honeymoon with my ex-wife. We ended up flying to Yellowknife, then to Whitehorse, then to Vancouver and we boarded the Canadian in Vancouver to return to Toronto. At the time, we were traveling off-season (March) so we paid $3850/person ($7700 total). We also planned it to depart from Vancouver since we paid 12% sales tax instead of 13% that we would have paid if we departed from Ontario. The service, food, amenities, private shower, queen bed and views all made the trip entirely worth it. Shortly after, my ex ended up getting a job working for VIA Rail where she still works to this day. Fun fact that our concierge told us; the Prestige class was the result of a class-action lawsuit against VIA Rail due to accessibility. Their train cars were not to the accessibility standards set out by the federal government and they lost a court case. Making the large-sized Prestige rooms was part of the resulting settlement and one of the rooms is designated as fully wheelchair accessible. VIA Rail (at the time) didn't expect the Prestige class to be as much of a success as it ended up being. This was by far the best time and experience of my life so I'm so happy you two got to experience it. Hopefully more people get the opportunity to experience it too!

Years ago booked the Canadian from Vancouver to Jasper. Spent a week around that national park enjoying the cross country and alpine skiing as well as snowshoeing and skating. The return trip was via the Skeena to Prince George and from there we transferred to (the then) BC Rail's Bud Car to North Vancouver. It was a fun time and a great experiece.

The only thing top end I saw was the bed, that leather couch looked really uncomfortable and the sky dome looked very outdated and uncomfortable. Those seats looked like they were from the 60s. I expected more plush seating. The food looked good but the portions looked really small, not much to choose from. I was shocked at the lack of snow and ice removal, apparently people don't sue in Canada for trips and falls because the area isn't cleared properly. There is no excuse for not sweeping the snow off the steps and all that ice at the stop, what's going on? Is that normal? That's crazy they should salt that, it's not even safe to walk on.

It's bitter sweet watching your vid. Growing up in the 80s, travelling by train(VIA Rail) was a common and affordable way to travel. One of my fondest childhood memories was taking the trip from Thunder Bay(bypassed now) to Winnipeg to visit my grandparents. Unfortunately, many of the regular routes/stations have been phased out. Glad to see it still has a presence to this day.

I just had a dream about 6 months ago, where I was traveling on a a very long train where the entire roof of the train was all glass. The entire train was that way and when it was night, I was laying in a large bed staring up at the stars. The train had so many different themes throughout the train, so you never got bored with one specific style. That was actually one of my favorite dreams this year!.... ❤❤❤

I traveled the other way-from Vancouver to Toronto, in June 2012.l got a ticked for only $190! I had an economy seat, but it was still quite comfy, met many interesting coopassengers, too. Food was great, views spectacular and the service very professional. Although we had 2 delays caused by cargo trains ahead of us, we still made it on time. Hopefully l will go again on such great adventure.

I have lived in Australia since 1979 (After 9 years US Army), and worked here as a teacher and artist, but grew up in Michigan. On one trip with a big group of Australian Vietnam Veterans in the 80's to attend the Chicago Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Parade... From there I took them in three rental cars to my Dad's home (164 Acres of woods and a great cabin). Hearing those Australians trying pronounce French spelling of Indian names so funny... then we wen't through the Detroit tunnel to Canada as i promised i'd take them to see Niagara Falls ... I used to travel back and forth in the 60's and 70's with no issues... but 7 Australians created such crap problems with customs??? We graved the "Queens Way" to the falls ... then had to drive back to Michigan to drop off the rentals. Then flew back to Australia... I found it funny as Canadians would constantly ask the Aussies; "What did you say" ... I guess as a teacher I'm used to the different accents... I'm guessing both sides were just messing with each other... Love this trip. I'm thinking my Australian wife and I would like to try it going back east??? It looked great... Nice post mate.
