In the 1930s, Mount Washington Observatory recorded wind speeds of 231 miles per hour (371 km/h). For decades, this was the fastest recorded wind speed on Earth, and remains the fastest wind speed recorded that wasn't associated with a tornado or hurricane/typhoon. Although Mount Washington is far from the tallest mountain on Earth, it's the most topographically prominent for hundreds of miles and North America's major wind patterns all converge in the White Mountains. >161 people have died in the Presidential Range (of which Mount Washington is part). For comparison, 330 have died on Mount Everest. Obviously far more people visit Mount Washington, but very few of them die due to mountaineering accidents - it's all due to exposure. Even in the height of summer, conditions can be awful. William Buckingham Curtis, an experienced athlete often called the father of modern amateur athletics, died on Mount Washington on June 30th, 1900. He was caught in a snowstorm and died from exhaustion before reaching safety. That's how dangerous the weather is here: A very athletic man died in a snowstorm in the middle of summer.

I went backpacking on the presidential range in september 2023, around the same time this comment was posted. It got below freezing overnight, and thankfully I had packed a heavy enough sleeping bag, but it was still very cold...

go down, or hide behind a rock or one of the buildings, hopefully with a bivy sack and extra clothes. I've been up there in winter when it was 0F with ~60 mph winds. I had all the right gear (plus extra) and it actually wasn't too bad lol

Would break, and snap, Windmills like the giant 200ft ones that sit atop hills or in open lands are only designed to handle 40mph and any faster and the computer tells the blades to turn flat and the clutch in the gear system disengages and applies a firm 500 ton brake,

Slightly stronger wind speed than germany. But in general, I was referring to the air current being strong enough to knock people off their feet and almost impossible to push against when your trying to walk into the wind. Like the stuff happening in this video. Common in the high peaks of the german mountains.
