Amorim was 3rd choice behind Tuchel and ETH this summer. If he really was there target joining in the summer and spending the ETH money to overhaul the squad would have been the smart move. The next best thing was to give to Ruud until the end of the season to clear out players to reduce some of the same narrative previous bosses inherited. By the time the summer comes this team and all its associated problems will be squarely his by most fans reckoning (sadly) with the knives out followed by statements of “if we don’t do x this season he has to go”

Joining in the summer would not have been "the smart move." He would not have had enough time to look at and work on the team properly. The smart move was to bring Amorim in during the season, maybe not quite this early, but not in the summer. That way he gets a look at the players and how they fit in his system, how they play in big games. He has had a look at the team, he can maybe get rid of some players he doesn't like, need or want in January, and then we might see a proper squad overhaul in the summer. If you bring a manager in in the summer, he'll look at the squad, think "I've worked with those players from (ex club) and know they work in my system, so I will bring them with me." (Case in point: Erik ten Hag) Give a manager a squad mid-season, and he will have to work with the players he's got and assess and address the issues when he can.
