Phones were not really scarce in 1999 in first world countries But they were simple phones you can’t do much with except call text & play a few simple games I didn’t personally have a phone till 1 year after this game It cost me 115-120 pounds for pay as you go Nokia phone

This is a cookie cutter comment. There's a degree of truth to it, however, since you were only born on this year you wouldn't really know. 1999 saw so-called 'men were men' players like Becks wearing a sarong and getting mocked for it, boy bands polluting the radio waves, and men being men here meant that a slightly above average player like Hamann could foul three Utd players and injure one, with only a yellow card. The simplicity of life was hugged by events like the Columbine shootings, nail bombs in London, and Clinton's impeachment. In 27 months' time there would be 9/11 and a phoney war on terror, producing a growing surveillance state in the UK, and after that everything would slowly turn to shit.
