Learn why MOTOTREK's producer, Tim Tyler, is switching to the 2020 KTM 790 Adventure S from the trusty 2014 Versys 650 that has carried him and the video production gear on MOTOTREK shoots all over the western United States for the last three years. The time is right for change. Discover why the Versys 650 had to go and how Tim modified the 790 Adventure to suit his needs.

People often say:" you can't lern how to ride offroad, on the internet". But to be hornest, I watched all your videos several times and started to ride offroad with my KTM 1050 ADV since late summer this year. And hell yeah, I remember lot of stuff that was told on this channle and yes, it helped me assess the situation and let me act more safe and fearless when things start to happen. So thanks to Bret, Dusty and You for giving me all the information I need to get started. Next year I will visit a course for ADV riding offroad because I had so much fun so far.

I’ve been riding motorcycles since I was in the 5th grade (1971) and videos like yours are the reason I continue to feel confident in the saddle. From mini bikes to Goldwings to my 1200GS, riding is an never ending training module. Once you think you know it all, you increase your likelihood of failure. Watch a video every day...it may just save your life! Keep the vids coming and ride safe!

I love your little comment that says, “you’re still reading this description”. Damn have you got a camera set up in my house? Brilliant observation about how we all live our lives. I’ve got a 1250GS in the garage and it won’t see rain let alone dirt. But I love it for continental touring: when they let us back in without the need to quarantine. Keep up with the excellent channel and maybe bring Brett back for the occasional surprise visit.

Tim great video, lots to be proud of with the channel. I love the fact you did so much of the previous work on a Versys. Point being...get out there with what you have or can afford. You don't need $15-20k. Especially when your farkles are on the cheap like you show (I just can't justify clearwaters....) I just watched a video of putting a higher profile 17" Shinko 705 on a CB500X, a good option for the Versys guys too to get 19" like diameter up front.

If you're going to try different tires, I highly recommend the Motos Adventure front tire. I put one on my 790 and it is easily the best dual-purpose tire I've ever had. Great traction in loose gravel and dirt, decent on tarmac, and it's wearing like iron having used only 3mm of its tread after 7300 pretty rough kms. I couldn't find the Motoz GPS rear I was going to try out, so went with a Heidenau Scout on the rear. This combo has worked well for me riding lots of loose, deep gravel. The Heidenau is down 5mm at the same distance.

Can’t wait for new videos! Love them! And they help me understand the basics of offroad riding and give me a lot of confidence to try things out. I also got a KTM790 ADV S model. The R is just to big for me. The bike gives me a lot of confidence and when I tip over its easy to get up😜 I mounted the Outback Motortek pannierrack with X-Frames and the SW-motech orange crashbars. I am also running the stock bashplate. Really looking forward to a review about how the suspension you were talking about works for the 790👌🏼I am a rider with some extra pounds😜 so the standard suspension under stress wil fail. Also losing weight is an option🤣🤦🏽‍♂️

Hey, really appreciate your videos. Love the clean and simple design, from the straight-forward presentation to the music. I watch Fortnine as well, and suffer through the hokey over-production, story-telling, and attempts at cutesy humor. I watch it for the content I can get out of it. As the saying goes, “eat the hay, spit out the sticks.” But Mototrek videos are all good hay. ☺️

Thanks for all the effort you put into producing these videos. I think it’s important that Dusty still rides the big GS though- a huge demographic of your viewers ride the GS/A. If you go with smaller, easier bikes like your new 790, the content is a bit less relatable for us GS riders. That said, congrats on your new bike. I have yet to hear a bad thing about the 790! I’d get one, but I have room for one bike and I do a lot of very long distance sport touring in addition to off-roading. So I’m sticking with my big GS! Thanks again. Hi Tim! Thank for all the great work you are doing! I'm a versys 650 2017 owner myself and I'd like to start adventure riding. I realize that with 21" front wheel and low CG - KTM is better suited for adventure riding comparing to versys. But as I already own a versys, adding some 50/50 tires and a skid plate will cost me $500 comparing to $10000 I'll have to spend upgrading to KTM 790. So my question is - for a beginner rider, how much easier it is to ride KTM 790 off road comparing to versys? Is it worth spending extra $$?
@MOTOTREK
@MOTOTREK 4 жыл бұрын
The Versys is fine on dirt and gravel roads and trails. It starts to reach it's limits when the suspension is too short to absorb obstacles. If you are tall enough to touch the ground with both feet then you can slow way down and traverse almost anything on any bike. If you're short like me but have incredible balance on the bike then you can traverse almost anything while riding. But if you're short AND a beginner/intermediate rider than the KTM's lower center of gravity, lower seat height and longer suspension travel really make a difference when it comes to obstacles.
@whitehatcomua

@@MOTOTREK Tim, thank you for the prompt response! I'm 5'9" so I can flat foot my versys. As I understood, KTM is more forgiving bike for a new rider, despite I can still ride (slowly) off-road with my versys.

My shock just failed, 15225mi on the bike. Ted from Beemershop hooked me up with the extreme shock and fork inserts, should be a new bike.

Hi, I love your videos... Just my 5ct, when you talk about measures, it would be great if you could talk metric as well. I believe your audience is pretty much international. Cheers and keep up the good work!

I've been waiting for someone with 29" inseam to try or talk about the three bikes you mentioned. I have been leaning more to the KTM 790 ADV standard over the R due to my inseam. Any infor you share is greatly appreciated. BUT I still like the price and looks and lack of electronics of the T7 best.

r has much better suspension so take that into consideration. 48mm forks vs 43mm forks if i recall correctly and a better rear shock.

@@0xsergy That's my dilemma, I know the R has better suspension but then it's quite a bit taller. My real current issue is we don't have a KTM dealer in Louisiana so going to even sit on one requires interstate travel, hundreds of miles.

Thanks so much for putting this together! What was the brand of the rack you put on the back, and what was the weight difference between the one you chose and the OEM KTM rack? Also, I agree with a previous poster about the TKC 70's. I'm running them on my (now up for sale) F700GS and absolutely love them.

I'm just using the stock KTM790 rack, Betsy. In fact, I just cut off the passenger handles the other day so the top case would sit flush on the rack. Passengers can hold onto the Mosko straps. Photos at instagram.com/p/CHrN3vkndMa/

@@MOTOTREK - Thanks for such a quick reply, and that's a great fix! I'm sorry, I didn't specify my question correctly - I was actually curious about the pannier rack :-)

Cut off handles! A simple plastic spacer of the same height as the handles would have worked!😀
