First and foremost, I would like to appreciate all the hard work you and your team put in for students. It has been a great help !! I would love to get clarity on the following questions: 1. What MBA specialization should I opt for to build a career in management consulting in order to work at the big 3 management firms ? 2. Which universities/colleges/schools in the UK would be suitable for the above course ? 3. Lastly, what other short courses related to management can I pursue along with graduation ? (during my articleship years while doing CA)

1. Management consulting requires a broad range of skills. So having a general management focus should be fine. 2. We have a video on the top MBA programs in UK. Check that out. 3. Short courses don't generally count much in terms of CV improvement. So choose any that you're really interested in, and not to enhance the resume.

How are freshers (with zero experience treated) in the placement drives of decent B schools... Also... if I have a blog in which I have some decent success through organic SEO and social media marketing, will I have an edge over other graduates. One last question I have is that should I keep working hard on this blog or look for other internships (in marketing, which I'm interested in) to have a better CV. PS- I know I asked around 3 questions in one comment.. But it would be really helpful if you could answer it briefly 😊

Almost all companies have requirements for fresh graduates. It helps to show experience and skills in a related field. So, your website/SEO experience could be helpful for a digital marketing role. But not for management consulting roles. If you're interested in marketing, try getting a marketing internship in the company you are interested in.

With so many MBA graduates moving towards consulting, do you think consulting firms will become saturated very soon? Do management consultants start to feel that they have been a part of a diverse projects but haven't been super invested in any of them? Like they must be feeling sidelined while they make others successful with their work instead of themselves, don't they?
@MBACrystalBall
@MBACrystalBall 4 жыл бұрын
Excellent questions, Udhava. Glad someone thought about it from a different perspectives. 1. On your point about saturation, it's important to understand that demand and supply are two different things. Tens of thousands of MBA grads try to get into the elite consulting firms (that's the supply part). However, the top consulting firms filter out a majority of those based on the market demand for their services. Many of those rejected aspirants drop their consulting plans and take up jobs in other industries. The attrition rates are also very high in consulting firms, which means they need a constant supply of fresh blood to keep the wheels churning. 2. Yes, that feeling of disillusionment is quite common, considering those consultants were the creme de la creme from their cohorts and were super-achievers in their own right even before joining the firm. Which is among the reasons, so many move onto pursue other opportunities.

While we've seen 3-year degree graduates getting in, it can be difficult. Mainly because many of the elite consulting firms have their favourite hunting grounds i.e programs (like top bschools) where they recruit regularly. If your program doesn't fall in that list you could still consider other (non front office) roles in consulting firms, and try to gain the relevant experience.

Top paying consulting jobs usually expect a premium MBA degree from a reputed bschool. Doing a certification is generally not very effective, unless you're aiming for backoffice jobs. Do you know anyone who gets that salary with a certificate course?

I have a difficult decision to make. I have approximately 8 years in IT and i want to make a career in strategy consulting in technology. I have admits from IIMA Pgpx and IIMC MBAEx. I'm currently waiting for IIMB results but I am not sure which program is the best for me. Some insights would be really helpful

Congrats on the admits. Before we share our views, a few quick questions to understand your position. Based on your evaluation, which one do you think is a better it and why? What score did you apply with? Didn't consider international MBA programs?
@CD_coffeegeek
@CD_coffeegeek 4 жыл бұрын
@@MBACrystalBall Thank you for responding. I actually have mixed views on all three. My GMAT score is 710 and I didn't apply to any of the International programs. When it comes to IIMs, everyone knows IIMA is the best because of its brand and legacy, but at the same time, the one year program of IIMB has been consistently ranked above ISB and IIMA for the past few years. To add to that, the curriculum design of IIMB's EPGP looks a lot more focused and diverse to me compared to IIMA's PGPX. It's very difficult to make a decision because I have asked a few students from the current batch of A and B and as expected, the folks from A favor A and the folks from B favor B. Some insights would really be helfpul.

If you had asked us the question before shortlisting programs, we'd have strongly encouraged you to consider international programs too, more so after considering your post MBA goals. Check out our video on MBA in India vs abroad to get more insights into why we might make that suggestion. Coming back to your current situation, if you've made up your mind to choose between the offers in hand, we'd go with IIMA. It's primarily a branding and perception related call, we'll admit. However, on the perception point, also keep in mind that 1 year programs from IIMs still haven't got the same acceptance as their formidable 2-year programs. So, don't just rely on the brand to get a foot in the door.

Management consultants in top tier firms are generally 'sector agnostic'. They move from one industry to another based on project and staffing needs. There's enough inhouse expertise in sectors such as automative that new consultants can tap into before and during the project. Unless you're referring to niche industry focused consulting that tends to be far more technical, and less business related.

1. Yes, work experience will help you position yourself better during admissions and also recruitment. 2. Depends on what job you aim for. Front office roles can be an issue. 3. Most MiM programs abroad don't have much value back in India, since the concept isn't familiar to most recruiters. Correct time to apply is anytime after graduation and by the time you have 1 year experience.

@@MBACrystalBall confusion is that some MBA's need min 4-5 years of experience. I have seen MiM for people who have lesser experience.. So basically I wanted to know which is suitable for me and im I eligible for MBA abroad.

MiM is suitable for applicants who start the program with under 2 years. You've crossed that threshold. MBA would be a better fit. But yes, like you said it requires more experience. You can apply after gaining 1-2 years more experience.

@@souravpal9546 Big 4 firms have a lot of departments that aren't connected to finance. It's a matter of finding where you fit in, and then applying for the right opportunity. Connect with a few folks in your target locations to find out how things work.
