People take their prevailing morale from the authentic attitude of the person or people they look up to: their leaders.
The number one factor is respect and enhancing people’s sense of self-worth
You need to take care of:
- Each individual: getting to know and value them. Looking for ways to stretch and develop them
- The team: creating a sense of team coherence and building collective morale.
As a manager, you need to maintain a positive attitude.
In the face of setbacks, you need to remain resilient (but realistic) and resourceful. Don’t deny the reality, but look for the opportunities and focus people on the meaningful work to recover.
Attitudes that help build team morale include:
• Adaptability and flexibility
• Recognition and appreciation for contributions
• Gratitude
• Optimism
RECOMMENDED EXERCISE
======================
1. First, make an honest assessment of your team's level of morale? (1 MC CPD Point)
2. Next, make time to speak to people in your team. Have conversations that will help you gauge their perceptions of their own morale and that of their colleagues. Then, set aside some time to reflect on what you have learned and develop as clear a picture of your team's morale as possible. (4 MC CPD Points)
3. If there is a shortfall, think about what has caused it and what you need to do to address the issue. Make a list of as many possible interventions as you can. (2 MC CPD Points)
4. Take the best ideas you had in part 3 and make a timetable for putting them into practice. (1 MC CPD Point)
4. Follow your plan for increasing the morale of your team. Discuss morale with them. Observe the impacts of changes you make. (4 MC CPD Points)
