Thanks, for this, Chris! Good explanation. I always keep a little mantra in my head that I learned from Jane Stafford: “Jump the bump and dive the dip.” If the previous pick is coming over the last weft thread like a bump, the next pick jumps it, or goes over it and then into the shed. If the previous pick is going down like a dip, the next pick dives under it before going into the shed.

Ooh, that's very clever!! Thanks so much!! (That Jane Stafford is brilliant, isn't she?)

I didn't have the mantra, but I had been given the concept - thank you for sharing this!

Knitters have two terms. Tinking is undoing it stitch by stitch. But sometimes you want to go back a long way. So then you just rip-it, which sounds like "ribbit", which is the sound that a frog makes, so it's called "frogging". For weaving, it'd have to be vaewing, so maybe we could call it "viewing". Just an idea.

I refer to "unweaving" as "picking back." I don't think I've ever heard an official term for the process. Also, having a floating selvedge makes carrying the unused weft up the side a little easier since you always know you're starting the pass either above or below the selvedge thread.

Oh, I like it! That's a good point about the floating selvedges!

I call undoing a knitting project frogging - it makes that sort of noise when pulling out the yarn. Rrrriiiipit....rrrriiiipit 😂 I have not experienced having to undo any weaving so no idea what to call it lol. Thank for the tips!

Exactly what I needed to know today. At what point do you decide that a stripe is too wide and that you should cut the yarn, vs. trapping the yarn at the edges?

Emily, great question! I tend to look at how much of a tail I'll leave if I cut it and make a judgement call from there!

Un weaving .... I call it Penelope-ing. If you know the story of Ulysses, fighting in ancient Troy. While he was off to the wars, his wife, Penelope, was holding down the home fort. As the years went on, neighboring kings wanted his kingdom and his wife. They told her to pick one to marry as he was most likely dead. She said she would chose a new husband after she finished this tapestry that she and her maids was weaving. They wove all day. At night, they unwove. It was taking years to finish. Of course the kings were clueless! And Ulysses came home in time to kill all the kings and re-instate himself as king and husband.

Only when you're ripping loads of stitches. If you are doing it stitch by stitch then it's called tinking, as Chris said.
