Managing Mods for Steam Games with Vortex Mod Manager on Steam Deck SteamOS

Hey so, just so you know a lot of this is unnecessary. You shouldn't move any of the files you should create sim links between them, it will act as though the file has moved without actually moving it. You can do this by dragging and dropping but clicking link here instead of move or by copying a file's location and then right clicking somewhere clicking create new and clicking link then adding in the file path. Doing it this way also lets it be seen by vortex and steam at the same time since the file essentially exists in 2 places at once despite there only being 1 copy of it

Thanks for sharing. For me sometimes symlinks the mods don't stick somehow. So I prefer just moving the game folder as it's basically instant.

Hey man. Here is an update on this video (you helped me out on another regarding installing Vortex via Lutris). Got it all to work almost flawlessly for Skyrim AE edition on steam. only one mod from what i can see is not working properly (the UI mod), but I will figuere that out. As you say, you can't run the steam game in the vortex prefix. In your other video, Vortex throws up an error that you must start a game once to create a profile. So if you need to start the game, but you can't do it in the Vortex prefix, what do you do? In your other video (with BG3) you run the game in Lutris using a wine runner. That seems to work for you with the non-steam version of BG3, but it doesn't seem to work for Steam games. (I'm actually curious why Vortex needed you to to start up BG3, but for Monster Hunter it didn't) This video seems to at least confirm I'm putting all the right things in the right places, even if I still can't get it to work. Thanks for your efforts on these videos regardless. Amazing somebody hasn't come up with an easier way to do this yet for Steam Deck

Some games like baldur's gate need to start the game once to generate the profile folder. For steam, just run it and it will generate. Then move the game folder to vortex prefix folder. After finish modding, move back to common folder.

I have, some work some don't. And too many symlinks I forget which one links to where. I just prefer moving the folders, doesn't take time, it's instant.

I'm trying to do the BG3 modification, and I don't seem to be able to get it to work. I tried the method of putting Vortex in the normal C:drive area, and moving the BG3 folder in and out of the common section. But that didnt work. So tried the other solution of finding the pfx folder in the appropriate game location, but I can't get the Vortex Mod Manager to find the game in that drive_c folder

you can use lutris to install vortex or just steam add non-steam game if you like. just make sure you know where the prefix folder of vortex is located as you need to move the game folder inside vortex prefix folder in order to manage it.

Gave up after 4 hours of trying to get everything set up unless someone can make linux compatible with Mods and modding in general or make it easy to mod on linux and Steam Deck kinda a pain to try and get mods in general to work on steam os let alone run it. try leaving the game in the common folder but drag the game folder to the vortex prefix folder and select "link here" to create a symlink. so that makes the game folder stay in the common folder but is virtually linked to the vortex prefix folder. not sure if this can help you.

I can’t seem to get this to work for fallout 4, it shows the mod folders in the mods tab in the setting of fallout 4 but for some reason it’s not appearing. When I check fallout 4 on vortex it says that the mods are installed and running but regardless of it being in the vortex folder or the common folder it just won’t load the mods and this is for any mod I try to install. So I'm trying to mod the STEAM version of Kingdom Hearts 3. So moving KH3 to Vortex drive C didn't work. I tried moving Vortex inside KH3's folder and that still didn't work. I dont have the same wine versions as you do and I cant get Vortex to launch when I follow all of your steps. Sometimes I can get the application to launch but it will just crash over and over. Also, I keep having to change the Wine configuration to be Windows 10 every time I try to install Vortex again.

For wine versions you can download from lutris on the left side. There should be a wine option and next to it manage versions. Go there to download wine versions. As for your other issues, not sure as it doesn't happen to me.

Hey, thanks for the video. I have a few questions about vortex mod profiles. For instance, on skyrim I have a few vortex profiles with different mods enabled for different play throughs. Does this method support switching between profiles? Like after I’ve downloaded all my mods and moved the folder back to common will I be able to decide which mods will be active or inactive by switching the enabled profile in vortex before I start skyrim? I tried following your other video on how to mod Baldur's Gate 3 as well to try to get the steam version of it modded, but am running into a confusing situation where when I change the wine prefix to the BG3 compatdata pfx folder as you mentioned in your other video, starting Vortex comes up with a warning that the downloads folder for vortex is invalid. All I did was change the "wine prefix" to the BG3 pfx folder location- but I still have my Vortex folders in my self-created vortex prefix folder as you instructed. Am I supposed to just indicate the downloads folder and browse for it, or do I move my entire downloaded vortex c drive into the BG3 pfx location? I thought just indicating it on the wine prefix bar would do the trick. I did end up trying to "browse" and manually selected my vortex folder but unfortunately when I add my Baldurs Gate 3 game folder into the c drive of vortex, it doesn't detect it when I manually browse for it in Vortex. I wonder if I need to move my entire vortex c drive into the BG3 compatdata folder?

I am coming to the same conclusion as everyone else. bg3 does not work unless vortex is installed straight into the prefix folder for bg3 and that really sucks. please comment if there is a fix for this yet. question does this method work with cyberpunk 2077?

On desktop mode after pressing play one screen pops up showing denuvo hardware id keygen status and exit play button after clicking play on that window i can play but in gaming mode after clicking play another window doesent pop up so i cant play from gaming mode. Yes, but if the mod uses dll files, lime scripthook, make sure you manually add the to winedlloverrides for it to work.

I don't get this. If you move the game folder back to its original place, then Vortex Mod Manager will no longer be able to manage said game and apply the mods. Because the game folder is no longer in C drive. You moved it back. So when you boot up the game, the mods shouldn't apply. Which is exactly what happened to me. Am I missing something here? EDIT - Yeah, I am missing something. The mods apply even after moving said folder. Everything works. My man, I can't thank you enough. I've been trying to mods Dying Light for two days. Watched almost 10 vids, tried Bottles, Steam Tinker, Lutris, nothing worked. This works. You got one massive like from me!

After you've modded the game, you don't need vortex every time to load the mods. But if you need vortex to disable or uninstall a mod then you need to move it back for it to manage it again.

@@GrownUpGamingGUG Hey, never mind. The only mod that works is the one I had to install manually (copy-pasting files into the game's folder). None of the mods installed through Vortex work. I followed everything to a T, got no errors in Vortex, and no mods apply. I even tried symlinking, thought maybe that'd change things. Nope - none of the mods installed through Vortex seem to apply. Got any idea? :(

Maybe some games aren't that simple. For bg3 I had to use another mod manager for example. What game are you trying?

Okay so this worked for my mods but I'm having an odd problem. When I switch BG3 to controller mode I can't use R1/L1 buttons for some reason. I've edited the button layout on steam to the official one but it's still not responding

I can’t drag my mods into the vortex mod, it just goes to a white screen. What do I do? EDIT: I fixed it. If anyone else runs into this, do a split screen with your dolphin and the vortex mod drop off box. Just slide it right on over from there, instead of dragging your mod file to vortex via task bar!

Hey. Huge thanks to your videos. It helped me a lot. But I got some troubles, please help me out. Here is what happened. 1. I referred to your another video, utilizing Vortex on deck 2. I couldn't find the prefix folder of the game(starfield) so moved the game in the folder named common to where Vortex existed 3. Registration of the game to Vortex worked but game was missing; when trying to play, it automatically starts update(downloading the whole game) But I see some comments here, I need to move the starfield folder to where vortex exists for modding and move this back when playing. Is it correct?

So for anyone who sees this who wants an answer. You have to change your desktop display configuration so that legacy applications are scaled by the system rather than letting them scale themselves. This will make it legible in handheld mode. Appreciate all your nonexistent help bud

I pretty much followed your video to the T, but whenever I attempt to download a mod via the manage games bar, it won't let me paste the links. Meaning I've got no choice but to enter the link manually. But when I do attempt to download the mod, vortex just hard crashes. My games are all steam as well, so my head is kind of just going into overload, so maybe I missed a step or messed something else up.
