I was recently diagnosed Schizoaffective. I had been on an antipsychotic for bipolar mania and depression, considering my original diagnosis at 18 was Bipolar 1. The reason for the change is I am not pill compliant and I already suffer from psychosis around my mania and my depression, however, I suffer from psychosis when I feel fine, I suffer from it when I'm in an episode - it doesn't matter where I'm at, I'll hear voices and see shadow figures. A big delusion I have is that no one cares about me or loves me. I do this with my family and my best friend. My best friend is a Godsend, she literally does not get bothered by me when I have a moment. She is patient, she is accepting, she is loving. I just started injections. I'm on Invega Sustenna. So far, it's 95% better than taking pills and my symptoms are getting better. I have little to no psychosis, my delusions aren't as bad. I can calm myself down easier. It's literally the best.

Yeah I had delusions too about taking meds. So when I was hospitalized I refused to take them for the first month. That's part of the reason I went on the shot because I did allow that. Fortunately I am completely cured of any schizoaffective symptoms with just the shot I take. Now I'm thankful for the medication even if it does make me sleep too much.

It makes me sad to think about people who are dealing with this but have little to no support. That would be so hard :( It's already hard enough. That's why channels like this are important. I just wish there didn't have to be people with next to no support dealing with this basically on their own, ending up in even more difficult circumstances 😔

I’ve been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and have been taking Abilify for about 3 weeks now, and I’m going out of my mind. I’m constantly pacing around, hate sitting down, and haven’t slept good in weeks. My doctor called it akathisia, and said that it would wear off in time. I’m happier on the meds, and they’ve helped my psychosis a lot, but they’re driving me crazy in a different way.

My son with his second (VERY Major) psychotic episode refused all meds. Paranoid he was being poisoned. In the end it was ruled to force medicate. He takes them now which are Abilify and a low dose of Quetiapin which acts as a kind of sedative. But it has not really worked the second one. So they trying now another mix to help with his anxiety. I think its important for people to know that at first its going to be trial and error for some people in trying to get the right medication and balance. My sons meds at the moment are not right I feel. But they continue to work with him in this area. This was a very informative video Lauren thank you for posting!

Clozapine has very good antipsychotic effect and if you don't get the dangerous side effect on your blood (then you can't take it) it works very well for many people. I take Olanzapine and it helps my anxiety. Be careful with weight though since some gain a lot. I'm good though, so it's individual. Keep testing meds, combos and doses, that's the best way to beat the symptoms, avoid hospitalization and prevent suicide. I hope he gets better!

You are probably helping a lot of people feel less alone and generally understood. Just never give up, already the illness has given you a new purpose, propelled you into this wonderful work of sharing your knowledge and experiences with everyone so the stigma will weaken. The symtoms never got to the point where they became problematic. I was always able to function like normal.I am now 55yrs and symptoms free. I never used or experiment with any type of recreational drug or alcohol. That may have contributed in preventing my symptoms from becoming out of control. I always though my experiences was normal. I relate a lot to the issues and weight gain associated with second generation antipsychotics. I gained nearly 80 pounds in less than 6 months on Seroquel, and I have struggled to find an other medication. I have since made large changes to my diet and taking Metformin to help with cravings. This has helped me a huge amount and I now finally feel full while on antipsychotics. While this is not ideal, it is a useful option for those who have tried many drugs. I am thankful to CAMH for having a Metabolic Clinic and having this program.

I’ll have to use an analogy to define the way I chose to view the way I stuck to my medication regiment. In order to build something with strength and integrity, there are tools that not only make the job easier but sometimes the specific job needs these tools in order to complete the job. I used my view of medication as a tool to finish what I hadn’t been able to complete. For instance, building a basic wood framed house requires hammers, nails and myself. Taking my medication as prescribed I was able to partially rebuild my life. Positivity was another tool. A great support group, friends and family are another outlet for helping rebuild oneself. Exercise was another tool whether it was a walk in a cool summer rain, a jog, swimming with friends or a simple walk in nature. Hopefully that helps everyone understand that when a mental health professional prescribes a medication, they are providing you with tools to help you rebuild your life.

I do believe this is very good advice. Collecting tools is a very good way of looking at it. I do believe playing an active role is best. To not assume the medicine will fix everything seems wise to me. Good luck to you on your journey.

I am doing well. Thank you for asking. The tools I used to help myself get through life at the time were needed. I truly believe that a mental health professional’s ultimate goal it to see their patients become independent, healed to the point where they never feel they’ll return back to the place they were in before and that they’ll find peace. All of these things are possible. It’s up to the patient to follow through with getting better. I was successful because I took my meds as prescribed. I followed the advice my psychiatrist gave when it was given. I went from not know what was reality to owning my house, property and my business as a blueberry farmer. This may not be what everyone sees as a success. But I do. And nothing matters to me more than my own mental health. So these things I’ve become successful with are also the tools I needed to continue towards my next set of tools if that points you in the right direction. I look at it like this: The medication at the time were my tools. Those helped me through my good times and my bad times. Now, my tools are my tools for my life. Literally. The difference is, I’m not concerned about not using these current tools. I can always change my direction in life and choose a different career, different lifestyle, even a different country to life in. But without those medications I took for so long, I would not be where I wanted to be. I truly hope this helps you and I hope you’re successful in everything you put your whole self towards. Take care and have a great day.

Hey, im also diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. I’m currently titrating off my medication and am at 150mg of Abilify. I was previously on 300mg of abilify and 200mg of haldol. One major thing people don’t understand, is that when you are coming off antipsychotic medication, psychotic symptoms can be a side affect of coming off the medication itself. People usually mistake this for the “unmasking of their symptoms”, when really it’s a side effect of coming off your medication(withdrawal symptoms). Also, I’m sure you already know this but you need to wean slowly. I usually have symptoms and then they go away after a few days. Try titrating slowing and see what happens. If the withdrawal symptoms are uncomfortable, an anti anxiety helps and you could always use the oral medication as needed once you’re weaned off. Please upvote so people see! Also, I think it is a common delusion to think the medication is poison or mind control because it does have negative cognitive effects if taken long term. For me and many others, even if not take long term, it blunts our ability to feel, think, and process.

I can attest to what he’s saying ^^^ Jake and I were married and I was there before diagnosis/medication and after. I was a believer in the medication at first because of the propaganda. But from personal experience, when he was completely off the medication for over a year and a half, he was the best I had ever seen him. I do think the medication was essential at first but getting off was essential for his recovery as well. He could converse again, think clearly, feel, express his emotions., understand and process through trauma. The medication made him depressed and miserable. He was out of touch with himself and others. We understand that stress is a trigger and talk therapy is vital. So with that in mind, he can safely and slowly titrate again and use as needed. I think the western medical model is generally, in the dark about recovering from and living with psychotic related disorders without medication. It does take time and effort but it is possible.

@@co8885 Hey, I’m sorry for your extremely hard circumstance. I have been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. Smoking marijuana definitely makes your symptoms worse. Dealing with someone who is currently in psychosis is extremely difficult. Im not sure exactly what will help him. people will tell you that he needs to be involuntary committed to a mental health facility. If he goes I’m almost 100 percent sure they will say medication is the only answer to his problem. I don’t know what is best for him. Talking to someone who has been through will definitely help. Because just knowing he’s not alone and that there is hope for recovery provides some kind of relief. Please believe him if he says the medication is torturous. Also knowing that the delusions and hallucinations have a deeper meaning. Do not try to convince him they aren’t real, that will only strengthen the delusion. Therapy is really important for him to better understand the roots of his symptoms. Avoiding stressors can also help.

I see a lot of my schizo affective disorder as being stuck in, "Spiritual Emergency". As I've aged, I have grown tired of trying to "conquer" my ... "dilemma." Instead of psyche meds though, I do more around exercise, developing relationships with others, living my true self (... while keeping aware of my impulse control issues...) and I try to use "process of elimination" ... which can only partially be effective if the environment I'm in is stable without too much inner/external changes ... nor DRAMA... and in today's world... this is asking for a high order to fill.) BUT... as you see, I'm searching out your videos because I'm thinking about going on meds too. I tried them way back in the mid 80s... and hated them. (It felt like my head was underwater... no.. it was late 90s!) Relationships and pursuing one's passion are naturally extremely helpful. Ideally you find someone who either has similar problems or is interested in psychology or some form of creativity to dance with. I'd avoid the BDSM type arena... too much reinforcing self-hatred and self-loathing. Instead I'd go straight to where I'm most afraid of intimacy ... and fear most rejection while keeping mindful that my Complexes can be triggered at any time ... and to have "Harm Reduction" type protocols on hand prevent me from making a mess. It's a crazy world where everyone is triggering everyone else these days. I think it was Jung who said that if you repress any drive within you before it's satiated, then it becomes INSTANT neurosis.

I’ve been taking medication since I was 13, and I’m 25 now. I’ve taken respirdone since I was 15 and lithium since I was 19. I got some blood work down and found out I have high prolactin levels 😬 I had a period for 2 weeks last month. I’m starting to get 2 cycles per month now from being on these medicines for so long. My new doctor is good at ordering labs to make sure everything is normal. I get my lithium levels done twice per year instead of once per year now. My blood levels now explain why I’ve been growing some facial hair and breaking out 😓 I appreciate your insight, but I think medication tolerance is very important for our wellbeing. t’s actually vital for me to take it! Even though medicine has some symptoms, there are a lot of ways to manage your symptoms. The more I take my meds, the easier it gets! I notice I feel better. like my mood, hallucinations, delusions are much less when I take my meds than when I don’t take them. Got dry mouth? Brush twice per day or use biotene. Visit the dentist and get a cleaning twice per year. Floss to reduce your chance of cavities. Keep some water nearby. Chew sugar free gum. Suck on sugar free mints.... theres lots of ways to manage symptoms. It’s a matter of knowing what your symptoms are and if you feel like you can manage them on your own or not. Sometimes when we don’t treat or symptoms, the symptoms get worse. I’m thankful for a diligent doctor! I love your channel!

You just have good days and bad. Even with medicine they are still there. At first it haunted me but now with time I'm just use to it. Keep up the great work! Your videos remind me that I'm not alone in this.

psychodynamic psychotherapy is an optional treatment for psychosis and all mental health issues but it is very controversial and its meant to be long term with medication not being the main focus. the idea behind this form of therapy is that most mental health issues are rooted in some form of trauma and by getting to the root and building a trusting relationship with the therapist, symptoms improve gradually over time. there are periods where medication is needed but medication is not meant for longterm use in this type of treatment plan. i am diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, PTSD and agoraphobia & this is what is working for me slowly but surely. I have tried CBT, DBT & medication alone but was unable to tolerate the side effects (gained 60lbs and had some allergic reactions). i hope more research comes out on psychodynamic for psychosis because not everyone can tolerate the side effects of medication.

I have tardive dyskinesia. I did a video about it. I also get Akathisia when I take certain antipsychotics such as Haldol and Risperdal. Now I'm on Rexulti and Haldol when the Rexulti isn't effective enough. I've been on so many. And yeah. I gained weight. My highest weight was about 235 pounds. I'm down to 180 now, but am struggling to lose a little more. My goal would be 140-150.

I'm AOT Court ordered to be on antipsychotic medication since the end of 2018. Don't ask. I have suffered through debilitating side effects. What I want to say is that right now I am on an injection of fluphenazine decanoate and just last night I heard that the injection I'm on can accumulate in the retina and cause blindness. Therefore I am supposed to visit an ophthalmologist to have my retinas checked.

I take somewhat manage schizophrenia without medication I deal with a lot of the symptoms in probably really bad ways though. I just stopped taking my medicine without telling my doctor because I don't trust them and I internalize a lot of my delusions and impulses I've gotten pretty good at telling when the voices are in my head by paying attention to how people react to sound when I hear them and I almost never talk to them out loud.

Great informative videos, they are very helpful for myself who has schizoaffective disorder. Just a question: since anti-psychotic medications target dopamine (the happy chemical in your brain) does it in effect reduce overall happiness levels? Is it possible to get to a high level of happiness when taking the medication, or is it always going to level out mood and reduce the possibility of feeling natural peak experiences of joy and happiness?

Hey, thanks for the comment! I'm not a doctor or a pharmacist so I can't answer your question from a scientific perspective. But from my own experience, some antipsychotic meds have made it more difficult to experience a wide range of emotions. That said, I have experienced high levels of happiness while taking the medications, so it is possible!

Loved the video, Im living with very active skitzo atm , never been diagnosed or treated , everything you say about being in a government mindcontrol operation is exactly what I think, they are using technology V2K to make me halucinate voices comking throogh my bedroom wall or someone whispering into my head so quietly, like its sooo irratating, I hear my thoughts repeated back to me out loud and inside my head like telepathy, I hear my neighbours talking about me. clearly like its directed conversation. im concious in my sleep, unless in dreams which are lucid everynight. I sleep like 4 hours evertnight. I dont want my family to know or end up in a home Ive been practicly alone for almost 4 years now as its constant 24/7. if I see something online say a 3sge car engine, the man or woman will say thats a 3sge is it Tony in a condescending. they tell me I'm dead all day and night why cant my dog talk to me like a crazy person in the movies. Big long Sighhh. I should gomto the doctor and say I hear voices my brain races constantly, I need some relief.

My son suffers from this illness and has for around ten years. He is currently in the hospital after being off of his meds for over a month. Once again the delusions and psychosis took over and he landed back in the hospital which he hates! Being an adult he has rights and know those rights. Last time he was in the hospital he refused taking the meds and was discharged. So we will see how well he does this time. I have reached out to Wm Hof and was informed that our state (New York) does not have one of their approved labs for drawing blood which I find that hard to believe. Getting my son to go to a lab is another problem, but at least it gave me hope that maybe there is another link out besides the meds that may help my boy. I would like to know if anyone has had positive results using Wm Hofs method too! Maybe someday I will find a magic wand and make this all go away! One more thing, not everyone has access or can afford good therapy. Thanks and keep up the good work!

Matt is so hard in US to help in this case when they are over 18 years old. My son is in psychosis as well. He is 18. He refuses treatment or to see a doctor. Doesn’t want any medication. We got a lawyer and we are trying temporary guardianship. Her family can do the same to help her. The judge denied us first by assigned 3 different doctors to talk to him and we have a hearing again next week. All 3 doctors said we should have plenary guardianship to at least 6 months to one year. To get him in treatment and a rehab as he abuses cannabis and is in psychosis right now. Please let her family know they might be able to get her temporary guardianship to force her to do treatment.

Antisychotics side effects are very empowering over the benefits( they shrink the brain and cause healthy cells to die they also make you drowsy which isn't healthy for a unwell person) try other alternatives to medication such as changing your diet ,visiting a dietician ,healing your inner self ( spiritual healing) and believing in yourself, you will recover quicker than medication .polio causes schizophrenia and other illnesses.
