I'm literally shocked and in tears!! You just don't understand how you've made me feel 20 million times better knowing I'm not alone. You are so brave for putting yourself out there like this because after my diagnosis about 5 years ago, I've been keeping myself confined to my home only and made all my friends hate me so I wouldn't be disappointed further down the line. I've started blogging because I have more disorders but it does help me out a lot but this last diagnosis, I really didn't want to believe and pretty much tried pretending it doesn't exist and that I was lied to...yup!! Thank you sooo much!!!

Your videos are truely inspirational! I have schizoaffective disorder. Symptoms started when I was 9, but had my first psychotic episode at 17. But what you show is that it is possible to manage your illness and lead a normal life. I work part-time and I'm independent and live with my symptoms. I am active and have a healthy social life. Despite having 4 psychotic episodes in my 20's, I have been stable for 10 years now. With the right medication and responding quickly to symptoms it is possible to manage schizoaffective disorder. I am proud of what I have achieved academically and professionally despite my illness. A diagnosis is not a life sentence.

@@hardlyalone mine was a gradual process. For most of my 20's I was able to work full-time, I was stable enough luckily. When I was 30 and had a massive psychotic breakdown, I was off sick for 1 year. After that it was a gradual process. Starting with part-time voluntary work for 1 year. Then 10 hours per week for a year. Slowly, slowly increasing to 20 hours per week, then up to 28 hours p/w. I am now contracted 20 hours per week. This suits me fine, about all I can manage now. It is a case of giving it a go, and testing your limits. Try and find a casual job, where you can control your hours and only take on what you can. I have been able to do this as a note-taker in education settings.
@hardlyalone

@@ruthmesser7099 Yes thanks so much for sharing...I feel like in the same situation. I been recovering for a little over year. Do you ever feel the urge to work full time? To get back where you were? Or have you accepted your situation and you are happy where you are at. I have a hard time with acceptance so I always want to get back where I was. After my first episode I recovered and went back to work full time for four years until my second episode. The second episode recovery has been much slower and difficult. Maybe working full time is too hard to maintain and thats why I eventually had another episode. But I did stop taking my meds at the time. I worry because I want to be independent and get married and have a family one day. So i believe I need to work full-time. Do you think my assumptions are wrong, and I still can achieve these goals working part time?
@ruthmesser7099
@ruthmesser7099 4 жыл бұрын
@@hardlyalone hi, I am never returning to full-time work again. I have made that decision. I am happy working part-time and have been stable for a very long time. I am able to do this as I have a highly paid job per hour, so can live on my income albeit low. I have no intention of having a family. But we do need to know our limits. If you can only manage part-time, you may have to accept this. I have never had a problem accepting my illness. I just want to get on with living. 🙂

Before I was diagnosed with schizophrenia I had a someone tell me I needed help. I didnt understand what type of help I needed or know what was going on with me. If you meet someone who is experiencing different mental health symptoms be specific about what you are witnessing. Just saying you need help, doesnt help the person at all.

I understand the need for accurate information, and how it is more helpful. Don't forget that, most folks don't have the education/background to offer what you ask for, and are doing the best they know how, to help you. The professionals, is where you will get the information you seek. I know it can be frustrating, dealing with folks who don't understand what you are going thru. Try to be kind to them, no one is perfect.

God! This explains why ever since I've been diagnosed with schizophrenia I felt emotionally withdrawn from those I love I would beat myself up for not being more loving to the persons I should love and who deserved to be loved. I hated my self for being a cold bastard, for not loving, for not *feeling* enough! All the time its this accursed disease! Man! This is the worst! Still I wouldn't use this as an excuse for withdrawing my self from people or trying to empathize with them. I'm not going to let this disease fuck with my social interactions.

The negative symptoms are the worst. I have no trouble with abstract thought but no matter what I think it doesn't change how I feel which is totally apathetic. I guess some things you just can't think your way around which is difficult to accept. Videos like this remind me not to be too hard on myself because I have an illness and there is only so much I can do about it.

Thanks for putting this on YT. You are such a beautiful and well spoken lady. I can't imagine how you discuss so well with all you have going on. What rotton luck that you were born with this awful illness. I don't know why things like this exist. But they do, and we humans just have to work with the cards we are dealt. As you are doing. Schizophrenia is such a puzzling but fascinating illness. You do such a good job of describing and explaining. Stay tough, as it looks like you doing.

You went into a lot of detail about positive and negative symptoms, but do you ever experience cognitive symptoms? Things like poor memory and concentration, disorganized or slow thinking, and a few other things. I feel like it's one of the least known and most poorly understood sets of schizophrenia/schizoaffective symptoms, but can be incredibly life-inhibiting and disabling for a lot of people. I don't currently experience significant positive or negative symptoms any more thanks to my medication, but the cognitive symptoms are definitely still there to the point where I need extra time on tests because my cognition is much slower than before I started experiencing schizoaffective symptoms. If you think it's worth talking about, maybe you could do a video on it or mention it in another video.

My boyfriend has Schizophrenia and what I notice is alot of him is he says he is rested and than less than five minutes later he'll say he is exhausted than if you ask him if he'd like to take a nap he will say he isn't tired.

Thanks for sharing. It helps me understand a little, about a person I was in a relationship with, for 5 years. I wish I knew more then, and was better able to respond in a helpful way, during relapses. Best wishes for your health and happiness.

Its honestly eye opening to know that there is two different "types" to this disorder. I believe to have schizoid personality disorder and will be seeing a psychiatrist here in a week. My therapist said she's on the route of a depressive disorder (was actually the reason why I started therapy anyway), however I did mention the schizoid part, which lead up to me getting an appointment with a psychiatrist. I've done lots of research and schizoid seems to fit every little bit of detail of my life. Now, hearing about the negative symptoms of schizophrenia, I feel like there's a huge overlap, and honestly now I can't even tell if I may have one or the other. Schizoid definitely comes out the most but the negative traits of schizophrenia seems such a good diagnosis as well. It's hard to literally think, want, speak, or even be around anyone. Is there anything that I should look into to best familiarize myself between the two? I've seen that schizoid could be a lead up to schizophrenia and it seems like everything I've researched and had made connections with, is pointing to both, in which would probably be ending up as schizophrenia with negative symptoms.
