Many thanks to our Presenting Sponsor, The University of Oregon - White Stag Block.
Jessica-aka "Thumper Biscuit" in roller derby circles-is a professor at both the University of Oregon and the Santa Fe Institute. She's a TED Fellow whose current goal is to help people visualize the invisible world of microorganisms to foster a world full of buildings that limit infectious disease and maximize energy.
TEDx
Established in 2009, in the spirit of "ideas worth spreading," TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED.com videos, live speakers and performers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. Over 1,400 TEDx events occur annually around the world.

These Ted talks have some really unique and intelligent people who clearly have been exposed to the topic they're speaking of they are clearly speaking from experience so we don't have to suffer or struggle to try and understand it by ourselves.

This is incredible! The right microbes can also increase psychological health. We can achieve sustainability and more through biophilic, biomimetic design, ecological engineering/design and the sciences of systems, complexity and networks.

Exactly... soil releases microbes that stimulate seratonin, so working with the dirt, gardening literally makes us happier.

I'm a contractor and am very much interested in interior landscape architecture. How can I learn more about what you're doing to apply this to up and coming projects?

OMG love it! I was just thinking about this exact subject. That we can integrate people and plants (and the microbial environment) to work together...so much integration that is missing from the common house and building! I have a number of ideas in this area I would love to talk sometime... Nice arms, heh! Funny someone would mention that...you do have good physique and posture. You seem pretty conscious about your balance? Yoga, Tai Chi? etc?

We certainly don’t want our building filled with MRSA, C.dificile, VRE or CPE etc. sadly our hospitals , ICU, CCU and HDU departments are already full of them.

[Esperanto] Tiu ĉi temo miaopinie estas tre grava, krom tre interesa! Ĉu niaj kutimoj pri la mikroboj povas malsanigi nin? Eble, kaj sendube ĝi estas esplorinda kaj esplorenda afero!

If we want to encourage the healthy microbes within our bodies should we not focus on ingesting healthy foods and engaging in regular outdoor activities in nature. The "garden" within my belly is more important than the "garden" on the surfaces of the building.

Wise people tend to follow the edict of moderation in everything. So, washing poo off your hands, sure... Constantly going around your house with chemicals trying to wipe out every last germ? Not so much.
