Manatee Attack - A Manatee tries to bite off my Hand!

Manatee's are naturally curious animals, they swim up to anyone usually unless they were badly treated by humans earlier. What makes me sick are the speed boats with motors that go through that area and disfigure manatees all the time. It's disgusting, and a lot of tourists blow it off.

Fart Fartington Saddest thing it's not even the ocean. It's the Everglades that they live, so they are going through swamps as fast as they can with motorboats injuring these poor animals.

I totally take by my comment. Thanks for informing me. No wonder there's a ton of environmentalists not throwing a fit about it, or a ton of laws trying to be passed and signs and manatee rescues. Because they're "ugly" and deserve to be hit by speed boats and have permanent injuries done to them where they can barely swim. Thanks for clearing that up, it makes it much clearer. +Kailua Kona I live locally to Three Sisters Springs....it's pretty damn hard to go there and NOT have manatees come up to you. If it was so illegal they'd just shut it down completely. They only recently did it as they huddled in a swarm to stay warm. They are curious and will come to you. Yea you can't go chasing after them but the point is you wont have to. Thankfully their numbers are on the rise as boaters are finally slowing tf down and not running over them =(

RoboTekno It ain't that hard to just mount a cage or duct around the propeller. Don't understand why everyone doesn't do it, since it makes it safer for divers and snorkellers as well as marine life.

lancer D Hmm, a duct or cage would be a little better. The best solution would probably be a jet nozzle such as on a personal watercraft like Jet Skis or Seadoos since there are no protrusions, just a hole into the hull. Although the down side is an open propeller is much more efficient then these jet nozzles. Also the drag of a cage or even a duct around a propeller produces considerable drag at higher speeds. Although ducts produce more static thrust when not moving or at low speeds, once up to speed, the duct starts to produce more drag than an open propeller would. So I guess if you want to same manatees and still enjoy watercraft, get a Seadoo :-P

RoboTekno The thing about jets is, they aren't really an aftermarket modification, Ducts and cages are something that is easy to add to an existing outboard. I didn't know that the extra thrust from ducts reduces at speed, so thanks for teaching me something new. The other option of course is to restrict water traffic over seagrass beds so that watercraft have to detour around.

I envy you. Manatees are such gentle creatures and to have such a close encounter would be such a treat. You were very kind not to chase them around and just let one approach you. Your interaction with this little one was commendable, not grabbing at it, just responding to its interaction with you. Like I said....I envy you.
