How to build a Friction Drive Bike

This is a simple way to build a cheap vehicle for commuting in a congested college town or city where parking can be a drag. This friction drive bike get great gas milege and is easily peddled if the drive unit is disengaged.

I just bought a Statton friction drive kit with the Honda 49cc motor. It arrives today and it is going on a beautiful Chinese 1-speed cruiser. Thinking of adding rim brakes for a little more stopping power over the coaster brake now that I know I can get one on the back wheel.

This was a great video and lots of information for me. I’ve been thinking about getting one of these kits for my bike. I’m 50 years old and I ride a bike every day for a few years now. I live in the southwest and we get a lot of wind storms here and this would help me out some riding into the wind after a hard day at work...👍

Fun little project! Are you aware that in California (looks like where you are, maybe Hesperia, Victorville area) that you can register them as a motorized bicycle if they have a centrifugul clutch, are 2 hp or less and you state they don't go over 25 mph. A 1 time $17 fee (don't have to renew yearly) and you get a license plate. No insurance required. Happy riding..Russ

Jon Gardella yes they sell different size rollers but you will loose bottom end power. It’s a trade off.

I’m not near the bike to remember how that happened. It seems like it bolted right up though. I’m sure there’s some variance between frames though.

What was the chinese knock off called? Did it take like a month to get it in? Want to shout out the seller of both where uou purchase. I was going to ger the bbr or flying horse lock n load kit and stanton engine but having trouble putting together best mount engine or just mount and engine made to fit each other and then the big problem is I have only had two stroke engines installed on a frame never a rear mount so I am concerned about the load of man and motor on the back end and the wheels and tires. So thinking Cruiser may not be the best idea because you sit directly over it, mountain bike front suspension no suspension or mountain bike full suspension thoughts? Like the video

I built one it was a nightmare and it chewed my rear tire up instead of moving. I will stick with the center mount chain driven bikes

Mine is still going strong and with the original tire👍🏻 the kit I bought this pretty high quality though.
