Manchester Arena’s AI weapon-scanning technology - does it work? - BBC Newsnight

This week the public Inquiry into the Manchester Arena bombing that killed 22 people in May 2017 will publish a report examining the response of the emergency services.
The Manchester Arena has described the atrocity as an incident which 'changed the landscape of security at large events' for the entire industry.
Since then the venue has introduced a raft of new security measures, including one new system provided by an American company called Evolv which uses AI weapons scanners to spot concealed weapons.
The company claims it has the ability to find ‘all weapons’, but a Newsnight investigation reveals evidence that the company has publicly overhyped this technology, which may not always be able to detect some weapons. James Clayton reports.

My first thought went to 3d printed ones too. There's no way - at the very least it takes a lot more than saying that the tech works in order to prove that the tech works. And like th3 piece closed with - I don't care how many weapons are detected. The CRUCIAL number is how many have NOT been detected. It would be funny if it wasn't so terrible.

System like that should be able to learn, by jove a sec system is one that could benefit from learning cycles very very well. Teaching it by making it learn from its mistakes. That is not AI. It is a simple compare tool. AI will get better over time. AI learns by centralizing all of the data from all of the units combined with human validations. An AI security scanner would be initially deployed in line with metal detectors and secondary physical searches. When the AI solution is proven to be more accurate than the existing over time, then the existing technology can be allowed to age out of the system. Augment first, test second, verify third, validate fourth, age out old equipment last (lifecycle management). New technology is only better when it is no longer new. I bet no one even considered repair cost, spares mean time to repair or mean time to failure or even able to withstand all of the environments the units were intended to be installed in. Or the issues with cyber vulnerabilities that are dynamic in nature requiring constant updates to the firmware in the units. What a mess. Devices like this get fooled by really dumb stuff like a pistol in someones pocket upside down or a pistol that someone added a trigger lock to. These are all simple things that occur by accident instead of intentional. Silly. A simple metal detector would catch both scenarios consistently.

As an American I am confident if you let me QA test this system, I could figure out ways to get firearms in. I doubt the machine can detect even a slide and barrel disassembled to be separate from a polymer frame.

Any computer-based pedestrian weapon detection system regardless if radar or sonar-based similar to ones used in cars but tuned for more detail at the expense of range designed to detect and distinguish various shapes will need to be controlled by a very sophisticated neural network that will need to not only recognize known shapes of weapons but also assess if the detected shape is potentially an improvised weapon. Realistically, I do not think that current computer-based replacements for security checks with real people performing the job are up to the task, they can complement the human element at best to improve results only while complementing not replacing security checks performed by a well-trained security staff. Unless these systems will be upgraded with far superior processing power, they simply lack the brain to utilize complex enough algorithms to compete with the human brain in predicting which object can or can't be used as a weapon, current solutions just trade convenience for reduction in security but I have no doubt that one day easily outperforms humans. So, just like with full self-driving, this future is still some decade away...
