Fair play Nick, very consise breakdown of what goes into these attempts. I personally have never run an official marathon but did 3x60km ultras last year cross country which got me into the distance game! That 2:20 is yours brother! Im hoping to get over the 100k ultra mark this year so I'm training hard and consistently and your content inspires me to keep going hard!

It's interesting to see the race from the elite's perspective- it seems super lonely out there at times! I can't imagine having to run long stretches on my own so extra props to you for still being able to execute such a fantastic time. I know 2 20 is the goal but 2 22 is still by all means a very impressive time, especially for a non Prof athlete with a family! 👊👊👊

@@angeloskadis9968 My quads just went out on me after only 17 km, so the remainder was mainly on will. About 30 meters before the finish line i started wobbling and it was if someone just flipped the switch on me and I was escorted in by samaritans. So weird because I almost ran an even split and I never have problems with me quads in training. Hope your went better than mine! :-)

My two cents regarding the shoes: take the best ones you can get! Maybe the next race will be the best one of your live and then it would be a shame if you 'saved' those shoes for a different race. Also, if they are as good as some suggest, then everybody will be using them soon, so you don't have an unfair advantag at running a good time. It's just that you can do this a few month before most of us (In my opinion this is only relevant when you're racing for position, not for time).

Kudos to your pacer. I paced 2 friends, allowing them to draft a bit and that is a lot harder thing to do than I expected. Do you try to get people to share work during the run to avoid runners just sitting there in the back? Do you just mention that it’s their turn to take lead?

Hi nick or anyone reading this who can offer advice. I’m a keen runner who has broken his 5th metatarsal on Boxing Day. I stopped running and cross trained for 6 weeks then tried returning to running. Long story short I’ve come back too soon and got a callus on my break. Been to the osteopath who’s said to rest more, massage the foot and strength exercises on the ankle. He said if that doesn’t work then I might have to knock running on the head. I can’t bear the thought of giving up nearly all my personal goals are around running. I don’t run with a club and don’t really know where to turn. If you were in my position what would you do? Who would you speak to? I Don’t mind paying any costs to run pain free again I just don’t know what to do next. Any advice would mean a lot. Thank you in advance. Matt

The moment you run below the 2:20 - your brain will set a new goal (maybe 2:18) - it’s human nature. Of course that doesn’t mean that 2:20 should excite you as a goal - you’ll probably feel great when you do it (you will 🤞) for at least 2 days 😅
