Andy Hull songwriter/singer. He explained that he wrote these lyrics thinking about his daughter. With all the problems we know, he wants his daughter to grow up mentally healthy and not follow the bad examples that surround her. Yes it's like a prayer

He said in an interview that the first half is a prayer to god. He wrote that part thinking of god specifically, the second part is about his daughter. It’s a song about both his faith and his daughter

Your interpretation of this song was beautiful. You have a fascinating mind! Thank you. If you go to the original post of this song and read the comments people have left you will end up in tears. It’s turned into a type of confessional for people going through deep tragedy.

Pretty confident their are religious connotations with this song, so watching reactions to this amazing song even though I am agnostic yet atheist at heart. This is the best I can do with my Easter Sunday. Great reaction

Unlike the clodhoppers in another "The Silence" reaction video, who seemed to want to rip open a packet of Brittney Spears Pop Rocks for idiot-proof lyrics and instant satisfaction, you were thoughtfully probing of the composition, which, objectively speaking, taking into account not only the poetic lyrics, but the unparalled voice of Andy Hull, arrangement, on-stage performance, and ultimately conflagrating instrumentation, truly deserves a place in the pantheon of transcendant musical works-- Manchester Orchestra's magnum opus.

They played an awesome late evening concert during July 2023 in St. Louis with 109 degree heat index and still sang it so beautifully despite the deadly heat & humidity.

The song does shift in perspective from a conversation with God to being about hope for his daughter, to rising above all the bad, keeping in mind that all we take with us in the end is how we are reflected in the eyes of others, and as you note, we are always the sum of our past experiences. The shift take place at the point in the video where it switches from the studio to a live performance.

Great react! This song, for me is one of the best songs ever written. A band who have truly grafted to be where they are off the back of this. Finally the world knows Manchester Orchestra and more will stop, listen, relate and find peace 🙌

Just kept telling myself, "he'll get it more completely as soon as Andy hits the lines, "Little girl you are cursed by my ancestry, there is only darkness & agony...I can not only see, but you stopped me from blinking..." AND YOU GOT THERE. even the early God references, they DO factor in, for sure. Such an all-powerful line in an all-powerful song. This, from a person who listens to REALLY HEAVY music.

I loved your take on this song. "Found" Manchester orchestra" a couple of months back .. They make so many strong songs and love their sound. Greatings from an old Danish Dear and Angel ❤

i feel like you nailed the meaning. i think the whole song could be mirroring the relationship he has with god (the father) with his father and as a father. i also guess the quiet retractions part is referencing a scene from his own life where his father was hiding his addiction. either way love your passion for analyzing!

When Andy says “there is nothing I could do” maybe he gives ALL credit to Jesus Christ. At our own death, it is the final end & we can’t save ourselves, only a higher intellectual being like Christ can!

I've never before heard anyone thinking this was a song about God, and as far as I know it wasn't written that way at all. You might be reaching a bit... Having said that, I did enjoy the reaction and your comments on life, meaning etc. (BTW... you sound very South African, but I see you live in the US. Emigrated there?)
