I remember the last game the team played, against Arsenal at Highbury, a few days before the tragedy occurred. I was 12 years old and my father took an aunt of mine and me to see the game at Highbury. It was a cold, dusky winter day. I recall marvelling at the famous giant clock at the end of the stadium. My family came from Manchester and I was an ardent United supporter, always anxiously following the team's results each Saturday. This game at Arsenal was the first professional football league game I'd ever seen and I was nervously shaking from start to finish. We were standing right down at the front, level with the pitch and watched while Duncan Edwards signed an autograph for a fan virtually at the centre spot while the teams were warming up before the match. Duncan Edwards, Bill Whelan, Tommy Taylor, Matt Busby ....... . Heroes, all of them for this 12 year old. To cut a long story short, the game was a tit-for-tat. It went continuously from one end to the other and I was sweating buckets but "suffering silently"! Anyway, United won 5-4! At the final whistle I was very relieved, but still shivered - not from cold, just nerves! It must have been one of the best games to date then. Those were the days of REAL football. Not this modern soft, show business namby-pamby. Those chaps earned comparatively well in those days, and I emphasize the term "earned". These days, even certain teams in lower divisions receive far more than they could ever "earn" ...... or can anyone explain and convince me that hundreds of thousands PER WEEK can be "earned". I rest my case! All the best to all, Horatio Nelson.

Trying to write a book is embarrassing but more importantly where do you want the money to go? Your obviously of the thinking that working class people shouldn't have money! I'm baffled that you believe the owners, the business men, the already millionaires should get all the money! I completely disagree I believe the players are the most important people in football (apart from fans obviously) and that if the club's are earning all that money then the players should get most of it as they have earned it more then the owners have. But you are typical of class racism that still goes on and you are an example of this! It's sad someone of your age still thinks the players should just be happy to play and the rich get all the money
@dondamon4669 Жыл бұрын
An of course it is earned as Ferguson said "to make it as a premiership player you are one in ten million so it's a very very hard job to get and they make small money compared to banks, and CEOS, and stock investors etc and football is a much harder skill then any kind of business work as anyone who puts there mind to it can be successful in business but not everyone can become a professional footballer" Ferguson actually thinks they are not paid enough when you compare it to actors and things like that!

What if the Munich air disaster never happened would we be now talking about man united as the record holder of European cups won by a English team, was that how good the busby babes were?
@TheGiantKillers6 жыл бұрын
It's impossible to say. Of the ten players who were killed or never played again I doubt all ten would have stayed at Old Trafford and built the decade long team of dominance many suspect. Geoff Bent was almost certainly leaving in the summer as he was struggling to get a game. There's also an anecdote regarding Ex United legend Johnny Carey who was Blackburn manager at the time. He got the Everton job that October and when discussing his team building plans with chairman, John Moores, they discussed two of the players killed in the crash [it was never said which two] but the discussion ended with Carey telling Moores, if money had been no object I could have convinced both lads to sign. Moores apparently replied "This is Everton, money is no object."
@DoctorHver6 жыл бұрын
I would say the progression of the team would probably have been more natural if Munich never happens. Busby was ruthless manager prior to Munich. Just look at his history with goal keepers. We can look at Ferguson era for comparison, were you can clearly see a logical pattern in the team development, just an example just look at the players Ferguson moved on in summer of 1995. He knew which 3 players to move on before bringing the kids. But back to Babes, Its just sad knowing that Geoff Bent hadn't played a game all season, last played in April of the previous season, but i have heard it reported that Geoff Bent wanted to stay at United, no matter what.
@TheGiantKillers6 жыл бұрын
Football was ruthless however and players never got what they wanted. As an update, I'm advised that Bolton's Bill Ridings had already enquired as to the availability of Bent if the price was right. I'm also told that the two players Carey suggested he would have taken to Everton if the crash hadn't happened were Jackie Blanchflower and Billy Whelan. It was of course easy for Cary to suggest to his new chairman eight months after the event but if he had indeed signed the pair, we can speculate on their future from the fact Carey did indeed sign a full back, Alex Parker and a forward, Roy Vernon in his first two months in the job. Both went on to form integral parts of Everton's 1963 title side with Vernon captaining the team.
@shaka75945 жыл бұрын
@@TheGiantKillers Geoff Bent was happy staying at old trafford, his own wife acknowledged this plus tommy taylor was offered to inter milan in 57 and flat refused, loyalty was more back then than being mercenary, i for one reckon that team wouldve been unstoppable here and abroad, the squad was immense, virtually international in the reserves, like webster of wales, young guns like stiles and giles coming thru and denis law was earmarked whilst the babes was alive, coupled with best in the 60's, a team with edwards colman best stiles giles law pegg whelan and taylor..well just wow..
@TheGiantKillers5 жыл бұрын
@@shaka7594 It's a romantic notion to believe all eight players were going to stay at Old Trafford for the next decade and they were going to beat all comers and dominate the game. David Meek, when asked to discuss it in the 70s, argued that the Munich team would most likely have mostly been broken up by 1962 and cited the big money sales of star men, Dennis Violett and Johnny Giles as evidence the club needed cash. The 62/63 team contained Charlton, Law, Herd, Stiles, Giles, Foulkes, Cantwell, Dunne, Crerrand and Gregg but such was the competitiveness of the game by 1962 that such a strong sounding United side almost got relegated. Meek suggested that only Duncan Edwards and David Pegg would have still been in the side by that stage. Few in the press knew the goings on at Old Trafford in the eraly 60s better than Meek. As for Bent. It's not opinion. The Manchester Evening News regarded the deal as almost certain at the end of the season.

So sad who knows what they would have went on to achieve . Busby went on to win the European cup if the babes hadn’t lost their lives I think they would have achieved it. God rest their souls.
