They can't come up with a reason to oppose it because there is no reason to oppose it. They can't say "our donors don't want this" because that would give the game away but we all know that's the case. Every person in this country (right-wing or left-wing) would benefit from an improved country. Find one Republican voter in West Virginia that would oppose improving schools... If it's the cost that is a problem, maybe you should have been dealing with this over the decades. Instead of a 4 trillion dollar package at one time, we could have been upgrading the country yearly with a smaller price tag. But apparently, giving money to defense contractors and tax cuts to billionaires is more important than schools and the environment.

I think the thing that bothers me the most is this idea that people are getting voted to go to Washington D.C. as a representative to do nothing. They raise campaign funds from people based on how little they accomplish. And they get paid nearly 200,000 dollars for that. And these are Senators who have jobs for 6 years at a time. A 6 year job to do nothing for 175k a year. Someone sign me up for that job. Do nothing? Sure. I can do that. And I promise you if I'm elected, I will do nothing to the best of my ability. No matter how many people ask me to do something, I will do nothing.

There's a major problem with this idea beginning with your thesis-- A HUGE majority of the Red State Voters, by the very mere fact of voting republican, are electing representatives de facto who are OPPOSED/ inherently contrary to their best interests, particularly economically but also politically. People in the bible belt and more conservative mid-west states vote conservative on the basis of social/cultural preferences concerning things like Abortion, Gay marriage, etc...
