Rule of Thumb: AI when used as a tool of the creative process for your own art, and not taking from someone else’s work without their permission, is okay but AI when used as a replacement for the creative process is a bad idea. Edited for clarification

Not really. There are still *a lot* of ethical issues concerning plagiarism and lack of consent, even when it’s not being used as a crutch. Even in the best case scenario, where you’re using AI to supplement the creative process rather than circumvent it, and the AI involved is exclusively trained on material that its designers had full permission to use, you’re still arguably normalising a dangerously under-regulated technology, one that’s threatening to put many artist’s’ livelihoods in jeopardy and facilitating the spread of misinformation.

Laws are complicated - they're supposed to be complicated - that's how we avoid loopholes and ambiguous interpretations. Any law regarding AI needs to be the same: Clear, specific, and unambiguous in what is and what is not tolerated, how to recognize when it's being used wrong, and what to do about it. The problem is not what AI can do, the problem is the law not keeping up with what it can do. A recurring problem in all tech-related laws and regulations. A "Rule of Thumb" has no place in a legal system.

The way AI was used in The Beatles’ recent projects (Get Back, Revolver remix, Now and Then) I think is fine, when you use it as a tool to enhance your own art and not taking from someone else’s without their consent or knowledge. On the other hand these AI written scripts for “new” episodes of old TV shows or fake songs written by AI in the style of other bands is very unethical, generally diminishes the creative process, and saps the very art we create of its humanity.

@@LadyDoomsinger all of that is valid, I should’ve clarified what I meant from the get go. I personally wouldn’t use AI in any artwork that I make, but I won’t begrudge someone else using it to enhance their own art unless they’re using it to alter someone else’s work to pass off as their own. Then that crosses a line into unethical territory. And I agree, there should be a clear distinction of how AI can and can’t be used ethically from a legal standpoint so we don’t have any worse incidents than we already do.

@@KealohaHarrison I can agree with all of that - being an artist myself, I'm generally not too bothered by AI, either. For 2 reasons: 1) Historically artists have learned their craft, by looking at the works of the past and imitating it, no different from what AI is doing - in Art school we literally spent most of the time looking at the work of other artists, and discussing their techniques, subjects, etc. 2) AI is a tool, no different from using photoshop or something - when digital art was first a thing, there was a massive outroar about how "fake" artists could mass produce their art on computers and put "real" artists that handcrafted their work out of business. Every time we get a new tool, a bunch of people will think it's the end of the old. AI is no different. As long as we have clear legislation on the subject, I have no concerns.

Those lifts in Ron's boots are really major additions, probably 2 to 3 inches at least. You can actually see the edge of his foot, and the angle it's at, pressed against the side of the boots at 1-43. It looks like it's close to a 45-degree angle. It would be awkward and uncomfortable to walk with them I'd reckon.
