These 2 fighters showed that we can be 2 gentlemen and make a war at the same time,without needing to insult each other for 6 months before the fight.The stoppage was too early but Chacon had no chance and his health was safe,but the "fans" in the Arena didn't care,they only wanted blood and death.

It had been almost 2 years after the Kim Fight and the media still wouldn't let it go. Shit the freaking media still today in 2019 won't let it go. It's very sad that Mancini had to deal with the Kim tragedy every time he had to fight.

I was at this fight. It never should of been stopped at this point. The crowd was furious. They are chanting BS. Chacon was not hurt. 90% of Mancinis punches were missing and glancing off gloves. Chacon was fighting back while leaning on the ropes like the wise old strategist he was. I dont know what the heck the announcers are talking about. I dont know if Chacon could've won but give him an honest shot, Dam! Chacon was famous for blood bath fights and pulling things out at the end. Steele needs to send a fat check to Chacon and a public apology for his either incompetence or corruption cuz on this night it was one or the other.

maybe but you gotta think of how chacon spent his last years, picking up cans and suffering from brain damage. I don't think he had too many fights after this so most of the damage is done by this point. It's a tough cruel sport.

I don't think Mancini couldn't have beaten the Bobby Chacon of the 1970's, and I liked Mancini. I remember watching this on HBO for free.
@ancientarchie14632 жыл бұрын
Can't believe Steele didn't at least give a standing 8 after the hook almost dropped Bobby @ 34:01. Otherwise, should have been stopped after the right @ 34:24. Bobby was almost 10 years older and a dozen years into a career full of wars and losses to several ATGs. Mancini was twice as strong with twice the wind and timing. Here, Bobby can't be distinguished from a sparring partner level of opposition. Ray got a way with a LOT of elbows and pushes. You look at this at this point in his career and understand why Bobby ended up with dementia as bad as early as Jerry Quarry. Makes me glad this was it for Boom Boom. He never won again. Took the beatings from Bramble in his next two fights then two more lopsided losses spread years apart (Camacho and Haugen).

tbh, ignoring what would happen to Chacon after he retired (the dementia) and just judging the fight on its own merits, the stoppage was premature. Yes, Chacon had taken a lot of punishment in his career but he hadn't lost in close to 3 years and had won both the 1982 and 1983 Ring Fight of the Year, both classic slugfests. He got shaken up in the final exchanges in the 3rd round, but had been firing back and landing until almost the end. He was defending himself, bobbing and weaving, not a defenceless target just getting hit. Yes, he was busting up but the cuts he had in the Boza-Edwards fight were much worse. The HBO crew were anticipating a quick win for Mancini right from the off. Saying all that, although both men were the same height, Mancini had the upper body of a welterweight, whereas Chacon looked more like a bulked-up featherweight. It was obvious that Mancini's shots were harder. But Chacon had his legs and wits about him at the time of the stoppage and Mancini missed the last few shots he threw. He should have been given the chance to finish the round and if Steele had concerns, then take a look at him in the corner or call the doctor in. Since when does the referee stop a fight because in his opinion the loser doesn't have a chance to win? In that case, most fights would be stopped before the first bell. Also, Steele allowed Chacon to finish his last fight (and win) against Boza-Edwards, despite getting dropped and badly cut. In that one, Steele called the ringside doctor in twice to take a look at him. It's like Steele was conscious of the punishment Chacon had taken in that fight and in the previous fight, against Limon.

As brave as Chacon was, he didn't belong in the ring with Mancini. Bobby was fighting at 122 not long before this, Mancini is a legitimate LW at 135. Mancini did well against Arguello for 11 rounds, that's way over Chacon's head. Chacon was a tough son of a gun though, he did better then I expected.

Ray Mancini was on his way to be white Ray Leonard. Sugar Ray had just retired, Boom Boom was the no: 1 lower divisions boxer, loved by public, offered sponsor deals by Pepsi and several other big companies.. That all disappeared from the table after Kim's death and Ray, though he was still good, was never the same. More mentally than physically, it wasnt due to the beating he got from Kim it was due to the beating he gave him. He lost that spark, he couldnt fight as he was used to.

The W.B.C. insisted that Chacon defend the title against Hector Camacho. Instead, Chacon defended the title against the W.B.C.'s # 1 contender, Cornelius Boza-Edwards. I have no idea why they would strip a champion for defending the title against the #1 contender, but the alphabet soup organization are all crooked, anyway.

Can't stand SRL on these broadcasts...I don't know why, other than his star power, HBO thought he was a great addition to these events. In just about EVERY one of these early 80s fights done by HBO, Ray finds some reason to predict a first round knockdown. Here he does it once again saying Chacon is punching too slow and it wouldn't surprise him if Mancini would score a flash knockdown. Leonard famously told HBO to shove it when they suggested he get some broadcasting instruction on delivery and diction so he continued sprinkling these broadcasts with contradictory statements and confusing syntax. Then, there's the annoying pronunciation of "head" as "heaaaaaaod". I was so glad when they parted ways in the early 90s.

@@romanojuventus7001 actually the only ASSHOLE would be somebody stupid enough to think that Ray Mancini was a great fighter. He fought nobody of consequence except for Aguello and Jose Luis Ramirez, who at that point was passed his prime, and he only beat him because of that; never came close to knocking him down. Ray Mancini, like another fighter of his time, Bobby Czyz, got a lot of attention because he was a white boy, specifically an over-hyped Italian-American white boy. It has often been speculated how a fight between him and Pazienza would have gone; has a New Englander who sparred Paz, albeit 34 years ago, there's no question in my mind that Vinny would have won.
