I am obviously biased as an Italian, but I was so impressed how Italy was able to turn the game around. Imagine being 0-1 after only two minutes in a Euro final, playing at Wembley with 95% of the audience cheering for the opposite team. Also missing a key player like Spinazzola and then Chiesa being out from the end of the 2nd half, they still managed to take it home. Our guys have really shown their character throughout the tournament and deserved to take it home!

I think the early goal for england turned out to be the worst thing that could happen for them.. There's no way they could've held italy off for the whole 90 minutes.

@@FootballMeta in hindsight I think in the same way as you. But football is made of episodes, and what surprised me was that England didn't really manage to shoot the Italian goal a few more times when Italy was still shellshocked. As I saw the game unfold, Italy recovered from the "shock" and slowly managed to regain control of the midfield, by then England had been pushed back completely into its own half. The next goal was just a matter of time

Good review. It was noticeable Mancini changed his tactics when he added cristante and berardi in the 55th minute. Which lead them to the decisive corner where bonucci scored. Such a shame we couldnt see England in the attack because after Shaw scored they made a Bunker in front of their goal, at times even Kane was in defence... Italy has more than deserved this trophy. Its not easy to bounce back after conceding a goal in the 2nd minute, italy players were very patient 👍🇮🇹 It was so entertaining to watch Chiesa play what a beast he is. The referee should also get a honorable mention, they did their job in the finals perfectly.

Mancini's game management was spot on. But I've noticed that the best Italian teams have ALWAYS had that powerful mental belief and resilience about them. The ability to think and fight through obstacles in real time. Their performance here reminded me of the World Cup semifinal against Germany in 2006.

Why? Because as great as Southgate has been in this tournament, his pragmatic defensive approach cost us dearly. It's an exact re-run of the 2018 WC Semi-final when we lost 2-1 to Croatia. Trippier scores an early goal and instead of going to get a second we opted to sit on the single goal, and we got punished for it. Southgate kept reiterating in pressers that he's learned from the mistakes of 2018 - clearly not.

You've made a mistake about how Italy played from 55 mins on. They did not play with players high centrally unless the ball went to wide areas where a cross might come. When Immobile went off they played without a striker at all. They played with two high and wide players either the wingers or the full backs and they effectively pinned Englands entire back 5. 2 forward midfielders or a full back occupied the half spaces and insigne played deeper centrally pinning both of Englands pivots, occasionally shuttling up on to the central defenders to try and pull them back with him to leave spaces. Mostly this created a line of 3 across the half space with the pivot Jorginho being deep centrally always with 2 players in the half spaces beside him either fullbakcs or midfielders and Chiellini and Bonucci behind him. The rotation and positional discipline of this was quite impressive. These spaces were almost constantly occupied though. IT became effectively 8 v 5 in front of Englands defence. This also is the reason why Italy kept winning the ball back so high. Englands creative outlet has always been their wing backs under Southgate as they have no progressive ball playing central players but with them pinned so far back during possession they couldn't join in effectively. So the dramatic defensive overload usually allowed Italy to win it back easily. Especially with Pickford's ludicrous long balls. The pattern changed somewhat when England went to a back 4 and the extra man in midfield allowed them to create better opportunities and to press better so Italy were less dominant in possession. But during this period England became more vulnerable to direct play from Bonucci to the wide areas as there was now more space in the England defence. I also think this was Mancini's thinking when bringing on a striker again in Extra time. That a more stretched English defense would struggle more. It didn't work out that way but the thinking is logical I think.

England has never dominated Italy. England scored from a missed corner from Italy. If a team ends the first half in advantage it does not mean that they dominated the first half. He said it was a game of two halves. England were the much better side in the first 35 minutes and if they had their best attacking line-up on the pitch with a forward approach, it could have been 3-0 by half-time. Italy were arguing amongst themselves and were clearly all over the shop and in a state of shock after the goal. Also, Shaw's goal was from a speedy well executed counter attack by England, so to say England "scored from a missed corner" is disingenuous. I doubt you'd like it if I said Italy scored from a poorly defended lucky rebound. Anyway, at the end of the day the best team won. Italy dominated possession in 70% of the match - for some weird reason conceding the ball is something Southgate doesn't seem to mind us doing. Italy will be a strong contender or favourite for the World Cup next year if they keep the squad together and Chiellini and Bonucci are still fit to play. I had Italy as 2nd favourite to win tournament behind France. If England are to go one further we need our most creative attacking players on the pitch not warming the bench. A more proactive and attack-minded manager is also a must.
@as680783

@@mikelescotto9906 No. Italy were in a state of confusion and panic for the first 20-30 minutes and England should've pressed on and made positive subs to capitalise on the situation. Instead, the ultra-defensive-minded manager, Southgate preferred our players to park the bus and sit on a slim 1-0 lead. More ruthless teams with a manager like your Mancini would have gone for the jugular and killed off the game 2 or 3 to nil. After 25-30 minutes Italy were clearly growing into the game. Second half there was only Italy playing positive football. Italy totally dominated possession on average and throughout the whole 90-minutes. In extra time England put more pressure on but it was too little too late. I knew as soon as we were 5-minutes into the second half we would concede a goal and go on to lose. Perspective required, bro.

@@as680783 Italy never been in panic. When you say on the first 20-30 minutes Italy was confused it’s only because Italy received goal on the first 2’, and needs time to keep a distance and change the team shape, don’t forget England play in Wembley. England goalkeeper has been the best player in the 120’, so wondering why? Donna ruma only on the corner but nothing danger. We feel sorry because we want close the game in 90’. The early goal for England was the best thing to happen to Italy. England dropped so deep at times, and Italy began to build into the game by taking more chances in possession. I think England also failed a bit in central midfield. I think Rice AND Phillips is a bit over kill. They're not the type to turn and thread a through ball. Mount could have been a big help if he was allowed more space in the middle, rather than in a front 3.

In my opinion, England playing in their home gave them indeed a high boost in morale, but it eventually recoiled in the penalties. The players that Southgate chose for the substitutions didn't play enough to get confident with the ball, and therefore they had to shoot the penalties with over 60 thousand people pressuring them, which definitely didn't help them to focus. Add to that the fact that it was the final and most important game of the tournament, and that Italy had an amazing goalkeeper, and you'll see why going to the penalties was the end for England. Poor strategy by Southgate.

Here is why Pickford did unusually well for an English goalkeeper, saving 2/5: 4 penalty takers were the same as 5 days earlier v Spain (he got Berardi, the new taker, completely wrong). Never in Euro history did a team win 2x PSOs and Bellotti & co showed why. They know the opposition keeper watched your last penalty under pressure, so you feel forced to change it. For each of the 4, Pickford went exactly mirror image from their Spain penalties. He must have been trained that this is the likely decision from repeat takers. In fact, it worked 2/4 times, and for Bonucci too, he got his direction guessed, but luckily changed not 1 but 2 things - direction (predictably) and height, getting the ball over the keeper (normally height means easier to save, but Pickford went all out expecting his usual angled drive). The smartest was Bernardeschi who just smashed it in the middle, feeling that Pickford had already made a sideways decision. Interesting how predictable we become in pressure situations, that's why Pickford who obviously has access to this science, was so confident

@@danguitar4522 there was only one team who was trying to win it and it was Italy. England were playing for pens. Other than the goal, how many shots did they have on goal??? zero. What was the possession %? Almost 70 to Italy….not sure if you were watching the same game…an England win would have been cruel and unjust as they cheated their way to the final!!!

Ya the tactics were something that i did reckon that changed the game. Especially when Mancini changed few players brought players like Cristante, berardi, and Bernadeschi to th game. They constantly created troubles to all english players . Still England managed to defend well. Also Italy were not putting too much attacking into the game fearing a counter from both teams. So overall it's a very well deserved win for Italy. Sorry english fans, I so understand the emotions of them. But England must have played more attacking game with the players and potential they have. Amazing euros 🙌 ❤🔥🔥 #kattakbfcfan

You know, I really liked how this game evolves. When Ebenezer Morley invented the rules, I think the tactic was one goalkeeper, nine defenders and one forward. Perhaps, England would have won the Euros using Morley 's tactic..

I firmly believe that had Italy scored first, the score line would've been way more lopsided, 3-0 or 4-0. Italy is known for their defending and defending 1-0 leads, which they tried in the Euro 2000 Final. But this Italian team completely threw defending out the window. Yes, you still have Bonucci and Chiellini at the back and both were rocks for Italy, but this Italian team was so devastating going forward. They were playing such beautiful flowing football that unlike England who tried to defend for 88 minutes, the game would've opened up.
@massimobernardo-
@massimobernardo- 3 жыл бұрын
without detracting from the beautiful English goal, but it was an Italian defensive error. It usually happens at the beginning of the game when you have to take measurements, or at the end when the patterns jump and fatigue sets in.

Southgate did not really get this wrong. Every game was calculated in a way that allowed us the best chance of victory. Southgate knows that if he goes toe to toe with Germany he loses 2 out of 3 times. If he goes toe to toe with Italy he loses 2 out of 3 times. His tactics allowed for a 50/50 chance at victory and this is exactly the outcome. We were able to prevent Italy from creating clear cut chances. yes, they had a couple of half chances but essentially the goal is from a scrappy corner where 4 times England players were second to the ball. If the game stays 1-0 for another 10 minutes then Italy have to push on and gamble and then chances on the break open up. Then England win 2-0 and everyone calls Southgate a genius. Once it was 1-1 the game gradually became pretty even. Yes his subs were maybe a little late and he probably should have "gone for it" with fresher legs earlier as penalties was always going to go against us. We can't have it both ways. We're not the best team in the world. We either play smart and calculated and progress or we go out in the round of 16 or quarter finals in a blaze of attacking glory.

Great analysis, although I didn't see England dominating the first half. They started very well and had a good 20 minutes or so, but even then they didn't fashion many chances. Italy got control of the midfield midway through the half (I've heard that Italy had 60% possession at half time) although just like England, they didn't create many chances. Mancini's attacking subs added a little more potency to their possession. Going forward, I hope that Mancini considers using Zaniolo as a false 9 as Immobile has been a huge disappointment in the Italy shirt - 15 goals in 52 games (most of which came against so called lesser teams) and far too many chances wasted, offsides and instances where he couldn't control the ball.

Italy squad consisted in world class players (Donnarumma, Chiellini, Bonucci, Jorginho, Verratti), young talents (Chiesa, Barella, Spinazzola, Locatelli, Pessina) and very good players all around (Florenzi, Insigne, Emerson, Immobile)... but the others are average players at best if not straight up bad (Bernardeschi lol)... Mancini succeeded in creating a tight squad playing great offensive football no matter which players stepped into the field, no other coach in Italy would have been capable of that

Here's what I saw: England rely on the counter attack. Whenever they counter-attacked, the Italians fouled, or otherwise disrupted the attack. The referee didn't stop them from doing it, and so the tactic worked. The bottom line is that England weren't as skillful as the Italians, and couldn't break their solid defence without the counter. And unless the referee started producing cards for the professional fouls, the Italian tactic would work. If anyone disagrees, I'd love to hear about it and talk below. For context, I'm a proud Englishman that is proud of what England achieved during the tournament.

Im still so confused why England would sit back and play defense. Italy played all defensive teams up until Belgium and to no surprise they had success against all those teams. Did England really think they would pull it off!? Italy struggled against high pressure (Spain had success) did Southgate not pay attention to that? He let Italy back into the game.

Honestly I haven’t seen England “dominating” the midfield or the game at any point. Dominating means keeping most of the ball and attacking, not just disrupting the opposition’s game. England were able to keep up with Italy’s possession for perhaps 20 minutes, but were never able to keep the ball for long and were never dangerous. At the end of the first half Italy had 63% possession, around 300 passes and 6 shots, while England had 37% possession, 130 passes and 1 shot. After that it was just Italy playing and England defending with 9 men, hitting on the break only a few times around the end of regular time and then the end of extra time.

We don’t have midfield players like Jorginho or Verratti or Modric or Kroos. This is why we struggle to connect our defence to the attack in any fluid and efficient way. So England have decided to bypass the midfield with wide attacks or playing out from the back with either Walker, Stones and especially Maguire pinging vertical balls into the half spaces.
