Thats the good think about Gothic. The Creator expect you to be an Asshole time to time. You can kill people out of greed and even get paid for it. Meanwhile Oblivion and Skyrim punish you for randomly killing people as they just give you the middle finger for killing people for Loot.

The thing is, the concept of Gothic is genuinely interesting. There's this great war against an orcish horde going on, but it's all background for why you get dropped into this situation. You're just some guy, and you never stop being just some guy, you just become a stronger, better version of yourself. You never stop being what passes for normal in this setting, never get any kind of special destiny or divine aid. I wish more fantasy games were willing to not force you to be the chosen one.

Or is it a folk-tale-narrator-type voice? There's such a beautifully rich variety of male voices. Sorry, that's just stuff I think about. One big advantage from having a smaller world map is, that you remember every place. I always remember "Oh yeah this hunter is right next to where I killed all those orcs". Not to mention a better quest design is possible. Like how you have the quest gives actually describe the quest location and how to get there. Instead of just a boring marker and arrow pointing the way. In this game, one has to listen to the quest givers if you actually want to know the way.

Maps being smaller have nothing to do with maps being memorable or your ability to recall them. Hey maybe didn't show the best examples because those potheads could easily seem as unnatural in real life. But his point holds true, many characters in the English voice acting just have a voice that doesn't fit the emotional state or position they are in.

19:09 The Dead Island games actually have that as a control option, they call it "stick swinger" or something. You even get an achievement for getting kills using it. It pairs amazingly well with the first person melee combat, very visceral feel to it, but it does make movement an absolute nightmare. Add in the fact it's a ZOMBIE game, where ZOMBIES SWARM you, it's completely unviable.

Oh, Gothic....Game that in my country have status of absouletly cult classic. And for good reasons. One thing that I personaly adore about this game is that even in very late game, with god-like gear and stats, there are still monsters that can kill you in a heartbeat if player isn't paying atenction. But if you know how to fight, you can murder preety much 99% of NPC-s and still finish the game.

I loved this game. This is an epic classic, right up there with Morrowind, Bloodlines, Deus Ex, etc. Playing and exploring was a blast, reading and planning for a more epic play-through (min/maxxing or completionist mode) was just as rewarding (as you had to face insane challenges, but for awesome rewards), this game was fun for multiple plays. This is one of those games where you think "why aren't we getting more games with this much awesome in this day and age, how come such old games (with such limitations) can outshine so many modern creations?". I know that some games are just breakthrough brilliant and innovative, but we can be building on old successes instead of innovating new duds. Even remakes, like X-Com and MechAssault, are such a disappointment; why do they have to dumb-down a game, can't they remake a classic and just improve graphics and take advantage of advanced computing power, why do they have to mess with success and muck it up? I think this is why I look for indie games more, they are more likely to focus on gameplay & story over just graphics & style/gimmicks. I'd rather have substance over slick graphics any day.

I was lucky to play it on a PIII 500 MHz in 800 x 600. A friend played on a 266 MHz PII and it was so bad (view distance nearly 0 to get playable FPS). Saving a game took a good 10 or so seconds and loading one was a bit over a minute. There was a demo released that featured the whole first starting area around the old camp and I played that through four or five times, knocking down everyone in the camp just to get more XP for that last level up. It was a ton of fun.

Yeah, the melee weapons knock them down first, but the piercing arrows kill them. That's also an important difference for some quests, where you better shouldn't kill some people.
