How about making it mandatory for people to drive properly!

This is the reason I don't want a modern car I want to drive the car, i don't want the car driving me As my driving instructor said anyone can behave for an hour to pass a test. Its all the years after that when they drive like a t**t

An excellent monologue putting the technology into some perspective. I've often said that if new drivers were trained more effectively, the gadgets would be superfluous. Perhaps new drivers should only learn by driving older cars (like a Metro) and be taught basic car care skills. This would sharpen their awareness.

Excellent video Captain. And it was the first of January 1965 when Seatbelts became mandatory in all new Cars in the US and Canada. By 1/01/67 all new Medium and Heavy Duty Trucks were mandated to have them.

This will make you laugh my Toyota Corolla and road sign recognition. Apparently on a 30mph road the speed limit was 70mph 🤷♂️

On the airbag point my wife had a crash in an escort with a tree when she was 18. the car didn't have an airbag so her face smashed into the sheering wheel breaking her jaw and eye socket. she very nearly died and now has 6 metal plates in her face. I'm pretty sure an airbag would have prevented quite a bit of that

I find it helps to remember that we have laws and rules because of the idiots. You and I don’t need a tyre pressure monitor because we know that every now and then we should check our tyre pressures. We’re smart enough and care enough to do these things for ourselves but lots of people either haven’t bothered to find out what sort of responsibilities they have towards their car or they just don’t care. So perhaps a bright yellow light or an annoying bong will compel them to take their car back to the garage where someone competent will do it and attempt to explain that sometimes you have to check things for yourself. Most of these features are unnecessary for us because we care about our cars and driving properly, but loads don’t. Im fully in support of adaptive cruise control, many’s the time I’ve been trundling along with my normal cruise control on and someone overtakes me, pulls in after completing their overtake and slows down so I have to either overtake them back or turn off my cruise control. And cars that park themselves, these are good because the car parks properly rather than sticking most of the car in the general vicinity of the space and thinking that’ll do. On reflection, features that protect the rest of us from the idiots or the careless get the thumbs up, those that promote laziness, irresponsibility and stupidity can get in the bin. Toodles.

ABS let's you steer when panic braking when without it the wheels would've locked but actually increases stopping distances. It's probably an overall benefit but would be even better if people realised it doesn't stop them any quicker.
@ryanwilliams6526Ай бұрын
It depends. In a panic braking situation, your average person will just stand on the brakes as hard as they can, locking up the wheels and massively increasing the stopping distance. ABS means they can do this and the car won't allow them to completely lock, so overall it does reduce the stopping distance most of the time. Obviously a decent driver knowing how much force you can brake with before locking up will stop quicker than either, but they are rare, as stated in the video.

My mandatory safety feature is having my cat in the car with me.
@carlosfandango2419Ай бұрын
Which safety system would you turn off with your kids/grandchildren in the car? Tyre pressure warnings are good for run-flats or low profiles which aren't quite as easy to spot. As for airbags - my dad used to drive a towing truck back in the day. I got to see cars with steering wheels folded around the column and broken windscreens. Claret everywhere and sometimes worse. A lot to be said for soft plastics and things that instantly inflate to save your skull and face. Lane assist - you may have a point, although if it keeps someone that's texting from side swiping me on the motorway then that's a good thing too. I don't mean to rain on the parade but there is no way I would drive around in a Metro these days, it would just act as a crumple zone to anything that hit it.

I'm not too fussed about safety features except lane departure warning system. That gets turned off everytime I get in, massively annoying and downright petrifying if you're not expecting it and you've forgotten to turn it off.

I wonder if they'll remove the option to switch it off

Much better if people were getting their tracking done regularly. No need to drift then.

One of the many reasons I have absolutely no interest in new cars is this tech bollox , drivers that need this technology to drive safely should not be on the road .

My 1997 Toyota Hilux has only one safety feature seat belts that's it amd in Australia we can't buy a brand new Suzuki Baleno we have a 2017 year model because it didn't come with blind spot monitoring but having seat belts in my Hilux l drive very defensively and pay more attention but l am a retired courier so all of my vans and utes had seat belts only maybe a couple had an air bag
@Daz_StapАй бұрын
I once read that the best safety feature that could be fitted in all cars would be a big spike protruding from the centre of the steering wheel. Everyone would drive carefully then!

👍👍, touch screens in cars with endless menus to scroll through no wonder you need all the safetty features to stop you crashing 😆. All a car needs is a radio knobs, buttons , switches and dials . And seat belts obviously lol.
@gazonatrike7005Ай бұрын
I started driving before wearing a seat belt was mandatory, I'm still here. I also drive with a 6ft spike pointing at my heart keeps me driving pretty safely I think. (one piece steering column)

Sadly all this technology does not make any of us safer at all. The drivers of new vehicles know that the car is watching for dangers and therefore they don't have to. So what do they do?.......They entertain themselves with other technology such as updating their social media on their phone while driving! Always remember, technology can fix a lot of things but it can't fix stupid!!

A lad I worked with said how he could roll all his fags for the day on his drive to work 'cos the lane assist would keep his car on the road..

It takes the responsibility away from the driver, which is wrong. Tyre pressure monitoring is good though, and blind spot assist. All the other stuff I'll switch off
