My theory: The original film said "was", but when quoted we leave out the "my momma always said" part. Standing alone, "Life was like a box of chocolates..." doesn't really make grammatical sense, so naturally we change it to "is" while quoting it. That's why people remember it as "is".

If you aren't aware a lot of people remember the quote as "life >IS< like a box of chocolates" being said by forest on that park bench. Not by him mum. That's what the Mandela effect is about in this context. people don't remember him saying "was". Now for an individual this can be brushed off as bad memory or something else.. but when there are LARGE amounts of people remembering it a certain way its spooky. I think if you think about it like this it makes more sense. Him saying life was is like almost more proper for him quoting his mother. And the tagline is like kind of quoting him/the idea or just putting the idea as straightforward as possible. If the back of the box said life was like a box of chocolates, it would sound awkward, like some romantic reminiscing vibe. Anyway hope that makes sense. I think it was both and people quoted the is version cause they probably saw it in tag lines or trailers or whatever and its the more straightforward version. So I wouldn’t count this as a true Mandela Effect

I remember years ago I first watched this movie when I was young and in Fort Bragg with my dad. It was night time I remember laying on the couch while my dad took the bedroom. I watch this movie 2 times while I was there (a week long). I remember both times Tom Hanks saying the line "momma always said life is like a box of chocolates...". I remember it so vividly, but now when I listen to every clip I can find with a title that says, 'life is like a box of chocolates', I met with a line that says, "life was like a box of chocolates." It doesn't make any sense to say "was", because that makes it sound as if life functioned a certain way while Forrest's mother was alive, and then after she died it suddenly didn't function that way anymore. So "life is..." is the proper option here, and the movie chose the wrong option for the opening scene.

I don't think this is proof at all. I can't explain a lot of Mandea effects, and some i belive to be true. However, this isn't one of them. You show the quote, "Life is like a box of chocolates. This was referenced twice in the movie. The first was when Sally field said, "life was a box of chocolates". The secon was when Tom Hanks was telling the the lady at the bus stop what his mother told him, and he said, "Life was like a box of chocolates". I think the quote on the box was quotingvthe mother's line, but added the word 'was' in front of, "like a box of chocolates." There was a mistake made on the box, combining the two refereces, and i think it may have confused everyone claiming that this is a msndella effect.

@@tykobray4132 I get what you and people are saying is there chance the timelines got mixed up yea but there is also the chance that people are mixing it up and the fact that it’s says “life is like a box of chocolates” is on the cover art leads me to believe for this particular case it’s people being mistaken, could I be wrong yes I was just saying both where in the movie. I think it’s more saying we are all more a like with our memory then we think, the reason we don’t use eye witness testimony as much in court because our memory tends to mess with us

Yes. I'm not religious, Agnostic-Secular basically, and I have seen enough evidence over the many months of knowing of this, to come to the conclusion that it is real. A really good way to grasp onto it is to see the quote of life is like a box of chocolate, on the VHS tapes box, and to hear it not said as such by the Forrest Gump himself, on the VHS. Mirror Mirror on the wall you can only find outside of Snow White's movie like on script or other stuff using reference.
