One thing to note with Johto is the reason Chuck, Olivia, Pryce, and the general level curve of their areas being so similar is Game Freak technically allows you to handle them in any order so in order to compensate for that they kept everything around the same level.

Watson having Plusle and Minun would actually be counter-productive from a design standpoint as their abilities, plus and minus respectively, were meant to show synergies that could occur in the at-the-time new double battle system. Unless Watson had a battle partner, Plusle and Minun would have muddied the synergy concept by appearing in singles format from a gym leader.

I really love the design of Raihan's gym battle. While not the first gym leader to have a double battle format, it reinforced the idea that we could use more. Weather effects being the main gimmick for his entire gym is really fun. Not flawless, but would definitely like to see the concepts used more

I honestly wish that they would branch out from just having gyms specialized around types. I like what you mentioned in another video about a hypothetical situation where someone was a honey tree specialist. Imagine a gym leader who in pokemon available at night. Or a Dog Breeder specialist who has different dog Pokemon. A gym that is part science lab that studies dreams and has sleep/dream related pokemon. Maybe only have a few like this per generation so most of the game is still more traditional.

I like the idea of a team that isn’t specifically just one Type. Giving a team a unifying strategy or thematic connection would be great. And to be fair, I think Raihan does this pretty well with his Sandstorm team. So getting more teams like that would be great.

Honestly I kind of agree. I think a good example I had discussed with a friend when the new games were announced was a sort of "futuristic/technology" themed gym, with example pokemon such as the Porygon line, Metagross line, and Rotom. Or a "storm" gym with a mix of water, ice, electric, and flying types and a heavy emphasis on weather.

Everything before Morty in Gen 2 was just blatant trolling by the devs. Flying type gym has a ground type coverage move. Bug gym whacks you with a STAB 110-Attack fueled move that doubles in power each time it's used. And of course everyone knows about Whitney's Demon Cow. (Honorable mention to her Clefairy who once Metronome'd me with a STAB hyper beam)

Johto's 5th, 6th, and 7th Leaders can be fought in any order, as are...most of Kanto's Leaders, so the level curve is bad there. All of them should have 4 Pokemon still.

I disagree. While you do have flexibility in what order you fight them in there is still an intended order. Fighting a higher placed Gym Leader early is essentially the player choosing to have a more difficult battle OR the players team matches up better against a later gym so it's better to fight that gym for levels and stat boosts (As Gym badges in early games boosted your Pokemons stats). It's pretty common from my experience that players will delay Sabrina until after Blaine since Blaine's AI is terrible and team isn't particularly strong while Psychic types are OP in Gen 1.

However with Johto it feels very intentional that the player is allowed to choose the order of gyms 5, 6 and 7. Since after gym 4 you get surf. Additionally you're in a crossroad and the next gym choice both require surf to access. Hell if anything I'd say Jasmine is gym 7 since she is game wise, further away from gym 4. Additionally a point for the intention being "do these gyms in your order" is the radio town. After you complete gym 7, the radio town takeover happens forcing the player back to a central location and putting them back on route to the next gym after takeover.

The only change I’d make for Raihan’s gym team is to replace his Gigalith (which has basically no dragon-like attributes) with a Tyranitar. Tyranitar is far more dragon-like than Gigalith, and both would have similar functions: setting up sandstorm for the rest of his team. The only major differences are that Tyranitar is faster than Gigalith, but is also 4x weak to Fighting.

Something that i have an issue with when you were talking about koga. “Poison is the most abundant type in kanto” But that also means a lot of other major trainers use poison types in kanto. Erika: vileplume and victreebel Sabrina: venomoth (sometimes) Giovanni: nidoking and nidoqueen Agatha: arbok, gengar/haunter, golbat (These were taken mostly from the FRLG teams) I’ve seen people on the mandjtv subreddit complain a bunch of times about koga and poison types in kanto, but nobody seems to realize how many other trainers have poison type pokemon in kanto.

This is why I think treating Koga as a poison specialist is too simplistic. His poison specialism is more incidental. I’d argue he's a status condition specialist. His tactics are based on ninjitsu: stealth and hitting from the shadows. In the Elite 4 he speaks more about how many status conditions he will inflict than his type specialty and all his pokemon inflict at least 1 condition, and this is without even mentioning his evasion tactics. He’s a ninja first, poison type trainer second.

Erika makes sense but Sabrina having a Venemoth in the first place makes no sense since there are other psychich types and Agatha should never have been made a Ghost specialist due to there only being one Ghost line. So it makes no sense for the Gym Leader who SPECIALIZES in Poison to have to repeat Pokémon just because they gave them to specialists that don't need them. Besides the "other trainers use other Poison types" arguement is silly because 1.) There are still other Poison types that weren't used by them 2.) Different specialists means different strategies can be employed and 3.) Gym Leaders already use Pokémon used by other trainers anyways.

Yeah, Beedrill fits; its pin missile in Gen 1 is definitely ninja-ish, and in pokemon yellow, they could put swords dance and double team on it to make it more of a ninja theme. Arbok also fits because it has glare, which adds to the whole strategy theme Koga also had. Imo, Koga should've also had Gengar. It's name comes from "doppelganger".. a body double or shadow. It screams ninja. But I guess it wouldn't make it unique to Agatha. But still, I think it's a missed opportunity there.

After Ecruteak City gym you get the HM surf, which doesn’t just make Cianwood City available, but also makes Mahogany Town and the Lake of Rage available to you. This means that you could choose either route. This also means that the devs probably saw this, so they made the levels to be more equal to Jasmine and Chuck. It is part of Johto’s open experience, which is one of the reasons why the original and the remakes are so deeply loved by a lot of fans. Now, it could’ve been a coincidence, idk, but still, something to think about.

I think the anime and manga are helpful for explaining the gym leaders teams. Sabrinas Abra Kadabra and Alakazam team makes sense because in the anime, her gym is full of psychic spoon benders, so while it may be a somewhat redundant team, her reliance on them makes sense. You suggested replacing Giovannis first Rhyhorn with a Sandslash, but I personally think a Golem would make more sense, as Brock is mostly seen with a geodude instead, and his signature pokemon is more onix/steelix, while Giovanni uses a Golem in the Adventure Manga and blows up the entire gym, which i think is hilarious.

10:57 I think the reason Pryce’s levels are the same as Chuck’s is because the game allows you to challenge either one of them first, which while this makes the game structure more open, it’s also forced to lower Pryce’s levels in case the player would challenge him first. I have no issue at all with gym leaders having starters. After all it's reasonable to assume that gym leaders were once eager 10-year old trainers who loved Pokemon enough to receive a starter from their regional professor. Now obviously they wouldn't use them in a gym team if no longer type relevant, but for grass, water or fire type gym leaders especially, it would actually make perfect sense for them to have one.

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if most of the time their ace IS their starter. I mean, in Bede's case I'm pretty sure his Hatterene was his starter and, lucky for him, it also happens to work with his switch to fairy. Marnie's is stated to be Morpeko, but it's never her ace as a gym leader, though it still stuck around. Plus in some other games you can find random trainers use starters so there's reason to assume you could just find it out somewhere in the wild in normal circumstances. I mean Gardenia uses the Turtwig line, Flint has an Infernape, Lance and Leon have Charizards, Red has all three of the starters as well as a Pikachu and Espeon to represent Yellow and Maylene gets an Infernape in BDSP rematches as well as Byron getting Empoleon, the triplets getting the Unovan starters in the PWT, Misty, Erika and Blaine getting the Kanto starters in the same game, and Flannery with Blaziken and Wake and Gardenia with Empoleon and Torterra respectively.

You know what? When I first played Pokemon Firered I lost to her twice. The second one was lost to that very Venomoth. I knocked her three Pokemon including her ace Alakazam. It was just Venomoth and I had four Pokemon left. I thought the match is now mine. But OMG! That Venomoth wiped my remaining team including my ace Blastoise with its gimmicky moveset! You know, I would instead make the Gym leaders much more diverse in the typing. The essence of a gym leader should be to show his type full potential to new players, not just of the pokémon type but of the Moves type. Like, if Blaine had a Gyarados with Fireblast or a Weezing with Will-o-wisp, I would have liked that. So having in every gym leader team at least one "Tricky" pokemon, one pokémon out of his type that can use their signature moves, should be a must for me. The ideal would be having a pokémon that has access to their signature move and it is also an anti-counter, like a Psychic or a Fairy type (to counter Fighting pokémon) with Attraction for Whitney. That would teach a new player the importance of coverage moves, both offensively and defensively.

Hey man, lurker here, just wanted to say, the Weezing line and Venomoth line teams make sense, if you think about it, there is a master and some apprentices, very ninja, and it shows how annoying a single type of pokemon can be when they are scaled up a couple levels, and have a slightly different moveset. Just an observation though, not to argue, I just prefer the poison type, and always thought his teams were a nice homage to ninjas in that regard. At face value this is beyond incredible. Somehow it gets more unbelievable the deeper one analyzes what you've done here. During your run you perform hundreds upon hundreds of orientation movements, spacial placement maneuvers, and intricately exercise fine granular camera control based on whatever your current task requires. This is what I find to be the most impressive part of this achievement! All it would take is a small deviation from your planned route to become disoriented and potentially lose time or force a restart... But even when there was one of your very, very few minor missteps in this run, you immediately had a contingency in place and were able to reorient yourself to your desired spacial placement and direction. This is beyond Super Mario 64. This is a vehicle on which you display a skill set that is something entirely difficult to comprehend from an outside perspective. I know I sure don't have the ability to commit to rote memory the kind of detail required to never miss a single step in something so insanely complex. On top of processing your exact coordinates and plane of view at nearly the rate of a computer, you still have to physically control the character and deal with the game mechanics... This is amazing, and I congratulate you on your new personal best and of course the world record. Looking forward to more content sometime. You've set the bar really high, but I have no doubt you have the determination to succeed in something even more unbelievable.

It's really sad. I mean, I understand that they said the developers said they would stay faithful to the original Diamond and Pearl games, but frankly this is staying a bit TOO faithful for my tastes. Also, why did they show those Pokemon from the Platinum Sinnoh Dex in the trailers, then? Was it just a blatant tease? Are these Pokemon still catchable in the main story but just not in the Sinnoh Dex? What's going on?

This may be an unpopular opinion but I'm actually fine with some gym leaders having one pokémon that doesn't belong to the type they specialize in, I think it makes things a little more unpredictable and challenging.

Floatzel and Seismitoad are better since Seismitoad is a Gen 5 Pokemon and like you said, Floatzel=swimmer.

Jeez, even freaking ORAS did it better, and they just threw that mechanic in because it was a Gen 6 game. Let's do the math: X & Y had the Lysandre fight and the championship fight against Diantha (I'm not including the Mega Lucario vs. Mega Lucario fight in that because it's basically a glorified tutorial), while ORAS has the final fight with Maxie/Archie, the fight with Wally at the end of Victory Road, the championship fight against Steven AND the post-credits fight against Brendan/May. And that's not even including the post-game content, where every Elite Four member gets a Mega on their rematch teams. Dear God, how did X & Y screw this up so much??!!!
