It's hard to believe, I saw this video a year ago and it was the start of my Mando playing. Thank you so much for getting me my start.

Me to, a little over a year ago. This guy is the main staple for the mandolin world to learn from. There are some new ones out there now, but this channel is all the meat and potatoes.

Hey nice video! Basically a noob here. I'm not a bluegrass person, per se (got into mandolin by way of REM, even made 1 video lesson) but I wanted to understand a little bit more about what you can do with a mando. The other chopping video I watched told you how to chop, but not how to use it properly, so your explanation turned something that was a little confusing to perfectly clear. Thanks! :)

Hi! You mentioned a chord "shapes" video around the 1:10 mark. Can you link that video? Thanks!

Great lesson. I've hated practicing my chop chords because it sounds pretty meh without other instruments. Thumbs up.

Thanks! Was told last week to play on the off beat and not to strum the G string cause that was messing up the base player. I'm only 3 months into playing the mandolin; so the base player, whom is a music teacher, telling me not to play the G string (on beat) so I could time the off beat was not not helping me one bit. A fellow over at Mandolin Cafe suggested counting the beat, 1 and 2 and 3 and 4. He was saying to strum on the "and" parts. Since I have short fingers, am struggling with 3 and 4 fingered chords. So am more or less stuck to strumming for now. Okay. I can feel a beat, though I think of it as a double beat. So maybe I feel the off beat and didn't know it. So have to decipher it's timing. Will give your lesson a go. :)

What makes a chop chord different than any other 4 string chord? Can you talk about the left hand muting technique? I can see you're doing it, but I'm not sure how much to lift the fingers to mute and not just have the strings open.

@@MandoLessons It took me three video lessons to learn where my finger tips should be. Now, I hope to know more on strumming, soon-- maybe only one more video? I never even held an instrument (and I am sixty) and decided to play mandolin, recently. I got it, yesterday, and hope I can learn it. Thanks for showing me where to place which fingers, anyway! Subbed..

I just can't get the finger position right. I don't think I've developed the finger range or accuracy yet. It just sounds like a muffled mess from the start.

Practice is the real key on this. I also find a warm up technique really good. Practice by setting the pinky finger on the 7th fret. Then let the ring finger go back and forth with the pinky on the 6th fret. Then back and forth pinky on 7, ring on 5th fret. Then proceed with middle finger at 4 then 3 and pinky staying at 7. Then index finger at 2 & 1, with pinky still at 7th fret. It takes a bit to get there. it is a matter of making the fingers do things they never had before, but it can be done. Try it every other day for two weeks. I was REALLY surprised at the improvement I was able to make.
