They don't call it the "Rolls Royce of mats" for nothing! Well at least back in the day that's what they used to call it... but that term hasn't stuck! I've been test-driving a bunch of their newer series mats... but I still come back to the good old PRO and PROlite. :)

Great comparison of the 3 different yoga mats. I have personally owned the pro mat for over 10 years and it's still as good as new. Best yoga mat investment I've ever made! I don't think I'll need another mat again!

I just bought their new Xtra sticky mat. My hands get really sweaty. I have owned the Manduka Pro for 20 years! It has held up through 2 teacher trainings and daily use. Now I'm happy they have the extra sticky one, depending on my practice, I have two to choose from. Years ago I practiced on a yoga rug over my mat . Excited to get Mandukas latest! I would NEVER use a studio mat.

Awesome! Glad to have helped! I recently made a comparison review of Liforme vs Manduka PRO and GRP mats here which goes into pros and cons of the Liforme here if you’re interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXvaaWVqat2HasU not to add to the confusion, but sometimes it’s good to consider different perspectives, especially when one is spending so much money on a mat! (TLDR: PROlite is still my choice especially if you want durability). 😉

I just bought the Pro Lite because I love my Pro so much! Biggest difference which is important to note is the 2” inch smaller width. I got used to all the extra width of the Pro. I almost like the “give” without it being too squishy the Pro Lite has. Pro is firmer. If Manduka could make the Pro lite in 26 inch width that would be perfect. I ordered the EKO it was to rubbery for my hands.

@jaimetan 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts, Jessica! I'd love to go to Wanderlust one day too... :) I'm not sure the PRO will be good for pilates coz even though it's thicker, it doesn't have much bounce to it - which is what you'd really need for more pilates mat work. I mean, I guess it could work, but some might find it a little too hard still for pilates floor work.

@jaimetan
@jaimetan 3 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean! Ultimately you won’t go wrong with either mat. If you want a solid mat you can use/ abuse/ fold in half to put in a suitcase/ easily wash and soap down - Manduka PROlite is the way to go. If you do hot yoga or get sweaty then put a mat towel over it. If you’re not into towels, then Manduka GRP or Liforme are the way to go (but both of these aren’t as durable). Liforme’s grip and feel is great but it’s super expensive and not as durable... so if you don’t mind spending a load of money every few years on a new mat, you’ll like the Liforme (oh, you also can’t fold this in half in a suitcase). So... as long as you know what the cons are and know what you’re in for, then go for it! Both brands are great so you can’t go wrong 👍

@@jaimetan Have been using for a week orso now and I love it. I am practicing daily at the moment but am not super advanced or anything. I just rode with that as an interesting variation on my practice. It’s stopped alreadyandperfectly grippy now. No salt needed,

@@jaimetan Yes! I was trying to decide between a JadeYoga Travel Mat (3 mm thick) vs a JadeYoga Voyager (1.5 mm thick) for beginner weekly practice. I wanted something super light weight to carry to class... but you convinced me that if I get something too thin (such as 2 mm or less) then it will hurt my joints on the floor and won't be enough cushion. So I decided to get the heavier mat because of the extra cushion (3 mm and 3 pounds). I'm so happy with my decision and my joints will thank you! The Manduka brand looks amazing as well!

Thank you for flipping the mats so we could all see what 6, 4 and 1 mm means to them. It is unacceptable to have a yoga mat above 5 lbs or one as thin as the thinnest one here, so I'm looking for something light but dense & knee & jump friendly.
@jaimetan
@jaimetan 6 ай бұрын
The 1mm is great as a travel mat - I often use it as a second skin on top of studio mats or even at the gym. Coz… the other mats are 2kg and above and if you’re trying to cutdown carry-on weight or luggage space, that helps. The 6 and 4mm ones might be what you like!

May I ask if you're slipping a lot on your Pro mat? I've been practising on mine almost everyday for two years and it doens't get better. I tend to get sweaty hands during demanding vinyasa sequences and I slip a lot in downward dog ...
@jaimetan
@jaimetan 3 жыл бұрын
@@Sabibella Hey Sabi! Sorry to hear your PRO feels slippery. There's two things that could be happening: first is how you're gripping - are you gripping through all your finger tips? So you're not just applying pressure through the palm of your hands but also through all 10 finger tips AND press each knuckle down into the mat. That changes the grip for many. If this still doesn't work, perhaps a mat towel might be what you need - you can try with the smaller eQua hand towels from Manduka. I did another review of the bigger mat towel, but you can try it first with the smaller hand towel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYuXqZ-Cj7Z1pLs (and if you're in Europe, you can get a 10% discount through my code in description!) @@Sabibella I don't find the pro to be slippery but my hands don't sweat much unless I'm in a heated class - in which case I opt for the Manduka eko or liforme mat. The hand towel sounds like a great idea, if you can't get along with these I think the eko or liforme are a good shout - although they aren't as durable it will be worth it to prevent slipping. In down dog also try to bring the weight back towards your legs and really engage the thighs, perhaps that will help. Good luck :)

Thanks for the review! Want to ask about folding the ProLite 4.7mm. Will it ruin my mat? When I spoke to Manduka, they don’t recommend it but saw in your video that you do fold it. So want to hear from a real user. I’m considering purchasing it for traveling as I think the Eko Super Lite is too thin for my knees
@jaimetan
@jaimetan 3 ай бұрын
The eko super lite is great when used as a skin on top of another mat (eg. A skin on top of a studio mat) but is definitely really thin when used on its own. Too thin for me but I know some people who use it on its own when travelling (I couldn’t!) The PROlite I’ve had for more than a decade now and over time it’s definitely got a crease line down the middle from folding in half then rolling (like in the video). It doesn’t bother me but I know it’ll bother some people so it depends what your preference is. Performance-wise it’s not affected as it still rolls out flat and stays flat during practice.

I have a Pro for a year and a half and really like it except the down dog. My hands slip only in this pose, but my feet don’t 🤷‍♀️ I tried to adjust my pose, spreading fingers, putting more pressure on knuckles etc. but no. One of the teachers said recently that you should be able to fit an imaginary blueberry under your palm and not smash it. I don’t really get it, how can you put pressure on your fingers and not smash a blueberry at the same time? I also did salt treatment twice per manduka recommendation. My back and shoulders hurt a lot after practice and I suspect down dog is the reason. I was even thinking to switch to liforme because everyone in my studio including teachers love and praise it. I use a small towel on top of the mat to help with slipping, but still don’t feel secure in this pose and still feel it’s wrong. And I don’t sweat too much.
@jaimetan
@jaimetan 8 ай бұрын
Yup, the hand grip can be quite confounding and it takes constant refinement… and even advancing in handstands refined my handgrip for down dog. If you think of your finger tips and the edges of the palm (that’s under your knuckles as well as under your wrist) as suction cups, that’s what your teacher means with that imaginary blueberry - pressure is not from centre of the palm but you’re gripping from finger tips, pressing through knuckles, and base of wrist. And yes on top of that as you’re pressing down into the floor, you’re also using your shoulders. Different teachers teach this differently but whether you’re elevating or depressing shoulders, ultimately at the same time you’re pressing the hips up and away from you, in opposite direction of hands (as you press heels down with active thighs). So you’re not dumping all the weight into your hands and shoulders (which could possibly be causing your shoulder/ back pain). I mean… as you can see, there’s A LOT going on in down dog. Slipping on the mat is often not just coz of the mat but how the position is held - through the entire pose. It takes time and constant refinement til you get there. If you use a small yoga towel like the Manduka equa, you definitely need to spray it with water so you get grip from it, otherwise it’s just going to add to your slippery issue. These towels aren’t grippy unless they’re wet. Hope this helps! Keep going! And yup sometimes you might need to try another mat and see how you like it. I’ve also done a comparison between the liforme and Manduka (I find it too thin for my liking)… you can watch that review here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXvaaWVqat2HasU

@@courtneyharrel5500 hey Courtney! Lovely to hear from you and thank you for sharing! How exciting you’ll have your PRO soon! I’m keen to hear how you like it over the PROlite... from listening to my students and followers it seems like in general people fall into 1 of 2 camps: the eKO vs. PRO material lovers. Eg. If they like the eKO material, they don’t like the PRO and vice versa, and I think it’s coz the grippy feel is quite different on both. (Case in point: I prefer the feel of the pro and actually don’t like the eKO!) I’ve used their mat sprays and they smell lovely! But over time it can become quite an expense, so another way of cleaning your mat can be making your own mat spray too 😜 (lots of KZbin videos on that). Congrats! You can’t go wrong with either the PRO or PROlite, hope you like yours! Not sure why they don’t recommend doing that anymore… maybe the mat materials have changed? Otherwise - if you Google “yoga mat natural cleaner” you’ll find recipes that usually involve essential oils and vinegar that could work too. There’s just nothing better than good old soap though, in my book!

@jaimetan 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Tina! You’re so welcome! And hmm… none of my PRO series mats have gotten softer over time so I doubt yours will too… I’m not sure that’s the answer you were hoping to hear though! This is definitely one of the pro’s of any of the PRO series mats - that they’re really stable because there’s hardly any “bounce” to them (really good for standing/ balancing poses so you don’t wobble). The PRO like you have is definitely supportive though - it helps in long-held Yin poses like dragon - the back knee on the floor doesn’t get painful. I have all 4 mats you mentioned at home (my bf uses Jade), and my fave is the Pro! The Adapt is too squishy and noisy (I made a review about it), and I don’t like grip of the eKO. It’s all so personal at the end of the day… I’ve found in general the people who gravitate to liking the feel of the PRO mats don’t really like the feel of the eKO mats and vice versa. I think this comes down to personal preference and is ultimately subjective. I've had my PRO for more than a decade (maybe almost 2 decades now) and my PROlite is almost a decade old now... and I have zero complaints of slipperiness. I don't know if the recent production methods have changed (hence changing the grip factor)... but ultimately if you're used to a rubbery grip more like the Jade mats, then you WON'T like the PRO mat's grip as it's not a rubbery texture like that. I personally don't like the rubbery feel of the Jade or Manduka's equivalent - the eKO series, as I find there's too much friction when jumping through. I find the PRO series really firm and stable and not at all slippery... so the only thing I can advise is: test them out! If there's a store or studio near you that has these, try them! If you don't like it, you might like Manduka's eKO series (with more rubbery grip). Hope this helps. :)

That’s what Manduka recommends on their website. I’ve never done that - just washed it with soap initially. Then again, I got my mats aaaaaaaages ago, before washing with salt was what they recommended. If it’s too slippery Initially then just do what they recommend on the faq’s on their website. 👍

I am getting the prolite! Can I really fold it like you did-all the time-without damaging it?
@jaimetan
@jaimetan 3 жыл бұрын
YAY! And... yuuuuup... I've been folding it flat in fours to travel for years like this. The first few minutes after you take it out, the parts that got folded just need time to expand back (kinda like if you squeeze styrofoam packing material and release it, it springs back to shape.) But if I'm not traveling, I roll it up like a regular yoga mat. So it's only ever folded flat in a suitcase for like 4 - 30 hours, depending how long my journey takes. Then I unfold it and roll it up after taking it out of the suitcase. And when I roll it up, I first fold it in half and then roll it up (so that the underside of the mat where the floor's been doesn't touch the top part of the mat where I practice - I'm anal like that. haha) But because it's constantly folded in half then rolled up, there is a line halfway across the mat now - but considering I've been doing this for like... 10 years now, other than the line that's there there's no other wear and tear or bubbling up (like what happened to my Liforme only after trying the same thing once - check out my other Liforme review too). Disclaimer: folding it flat is in no way what's recommended by the manufacturer, so while it works for me - be careful with your new mat! ENJOY YOUR PROLITE! :))))

Hi Jamie, great informative video. You were able to fold the Pro Lite mat into square, is that the same case with Pro, can we fold them like a square. I know it might look bulky but is that even an option ? Lots of other company mats doesn't fold that way, we need to roll them. By the way I saw the other video, where you were showing about how to roll a mat ? Was that a lite or a pro ?

Hey Ravi! Thanks, glad you enjoyed this one. I only fold the PROlite and all the travel mats (PRO and eKO). The PRO is too big to be folded - because it’s thicker it just wouldn’t work! If it helps when you’re watching my videos, my PRO is the black mat and the PROlite and PRO-travel are the navy blue mats.

@@jaimetan okay got it. Thanks Jamie. I am considering getting one pro but also the website says that it’s not recommended for everyone starting out and it needs to break in and for break-in either we have to practice everyday to make the mat rough or take some salt and put on the mat and then keep in sunlight the wipe with a cloth. All that instructions on the website. Not sure why ?

@@ravichandra86425 the Pro mats are all a little slippery initially - there’s like a film over it from the manufacturing process whcih needs to be washed away/ broken down. I never salted any of my Pro mats, just washed them with body soap/ bath gel in the shower a few times and they were good to go. But bear in mind my Pro mats are more than 10 years old now so I don’t know if they’ve changed the manufacturing process/ how they’re made now. Hey Vishal! Had a chat with someone in the product team at Manduka and it seems like if you’re preferring the grip of the Jade, then the grip of the Pro may not be the right mat for you... and instead their eKO series of mats might be what you prefer, since those are natural rubber and of a similar texture and feel to the Jade. Years ago I had an eKO lite mat and my boyfriend practices on a Jade mat... but to be honest I don’t enjoy the feel of either. 🤷🏻‍♀️ So this is when it comes down to personal preference of the feel and texture of mats. And unfortunately in this case it may be that the PRO mat actually isn’t the right mat for you, and you might actually prefer the eKO! If you’re already happy with your Jade... then that’s actually great news coz - hey! You have a mat you’re enjoying and practising on! 🙌

Hi! Thanks for the video! It’s so hard to pick up a mat online, I really wish there were some general shops with loads of mats to try! I really want a PRO mostly for the 6mm thickness and generous dimensions (I am quite tall) but I am really worried about not getting enough grip. I have the Eko SL and find the grip amazing. Once I break it in, would the PRO have an equally good grip? Or is the PRO just not for me?
@jaimetan
@jaimetan Ай бұрын
@@laureemery1969 ah. The eko and Pro mats have quite different kinds of grip. In general I find the people who like the eko grip haven’t appreciated the kind of grip the Pro mats have (generalisation of course). Where the eko has a grippy rubbery feel, the Pro has a different texture feel to it. You need to engage through the finger pads/ knuckles more into the Pro mat - so it’s grippy but in a different kind of way (texturally) to the eko… hard to describe in words it really is something you need to experience since it’s so subjective. Sorry i can’t be of more help! (Or can you buy through Amazon and return in the worse case?)

@@jaimetanthanks a lot! It does help. It’s difficult as to really get a feel of the PRO mat, I would need to salt it and use it a lot before being able to really tell if I like it or not. And by that point I wouldn’t be able to return it… I managed to find one studio with Manduka mats (PROlite I think, nobody could tell me at the studio) and I was surprised at how slippery it was! To the point I had to constantly reposition myself. It was worse than with my £30 mat! Not sure if the mat was too new and still had the kind of film on it, but it made me question if that was the right mat for me. If it was cheap I would give it a try but I am a bit scared to put so much money in it and maybe don’t like it. But like you I am super grossed by the idea of sweat and dirt etc being soaked by the mat so I really want a closed cell mat and my knees would very much appreciate de 6mm thickness. But thanks for your video and for your reply! It does help :)

@@laureemery1969 great that you had a chance to test it! And yup - the Pro mats ensure you need to engage your hand and foot bandhas in order to get the grip. The eko is more forgiving that way 👌

Hi Jamie! I’m looking for a mat for the beach, will the PROlite work on this ocasion? Or it’ll get sticky?
@jaimetan
@jaimetan 3 жыл бұрын
Ciao Guillermo! I’m not sure what you mean about the mat getting sticky at the beach? I think with any yoga mat at the beach, the uneven terrain of the sand will be an issue unless you have a wooden board/ plank you can place your mat on to practice on. The good thing about the PRO series mats is they’re closed cell so won’t absorb water so will be easy to hose down and clean after a day at the beach. Not sure this answers your question though! 🤷🏻‍♀️

I bought the warrior Manuka mat couple years ago, it's a very expensive mat and I expected a very good quality and an excellent grip. The quality of the mat is good, but the grip is very bad, I slip all the time. I can't go deep in the position. Im a yoga instructor and I use my mat many hours per day, Im really sad about the result of this Manduka mat.
@jaimetan
@jaimetan 2 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry to hear about your experience! I have the opposite with the grip on this mat… but a large part with grip is also about how you’re engaging through the body. Eg. In down dog, Pressing through the heel of hand, pressing each knuckle into the mat and also suction-cupping each finger tip into the mat. Together with external rotation of upper arms and shoulders, that gives a solid grip on this mat. Perhaps the feel of this mat isn’t for you! But you might like the eKO series in this case where it’s got a grippy, natural rubber feel. I hope you find your “soul mat”! ❤️

I’ve read that you need to really work to break in the mat to get rid of the slippery feel. It had me rub coarse sea salt with a damp cloth and that helped speed up the process!
@chowinkle
@chowinkle 7 ай бұрын
Yep, you didn’t break it in with a coarse sea salt scrub; need to put it out in the sun for 24 hours plus with lots of sea salt, ie a kilo. Then sprinkle water and scrub like crazy, wash off the salt and dry in the sun. Try the mat to see how it feels. Probably need to repeat the process at least twice.
