In this video, we discuss the case Maneka Gandhi v. Union of India (1978), which significantly expanded the interpretation of Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, transforming the scope of personal liberty and due process. The Supreme Court of India ruled that the right to life and personal liberty cannot be restricted except through a procedure that is just, fair, and reasonable. This case overturned earlier precedents and laid the foundation for modern human rights jurisprudence in India, particularly the rights to free movement, speech, and protection from arbitrary state action.
