Guess this puts to rest the idea that fencers back in the day didn’t yell after touches, hell they were yelling during the touches.

On occasion I will read comments by fencers who say our current crop of world champion level foil fencers would never be able to compete with the old masters, such as the Nadi brothers. Why? Well, it used to be because modern foil fencers, at least at the championship level, never disengage in the traditional sense, nor coupe. Everything is about establishing ROW, then keeping the arm back until you get the opponent attempting to counter, then finishing. But you see these guys don't fence like that at all. The Russian I suppose fenced more like our generation. The Italian guy is fencing more like a 19th century epeeist. If somehow you could pull a time travel move and bring the Italian into our era to fencer our fencers, he'd be amazed at what we call foil. And who would ref? Anyways, thanks for posting this. Very interesting.

the guy on the left was an epee fencer for most of his life.

You would have to beat or take the Italians blade, easier said than done as Im sure he is an expert Derober.

@@Senecart81 , funny you should bring that up. About 20 years ago I took a coaching class with USFCA representative Anthony Gillham, of Milwaukee, recently deceased, God rest his soul. He did a bit of a demonstration, where he asked a student to avoid his attempt to take the blade, then hit. Student did as asked, both his valid. Tony asks the class "Who's touche?" Everyone in the group said it was the students, as he attempted to take the blade, failed, and simple continued on for a counterattack. "No, my attack. Did you see my arm extending? Watch again." Repeat, and yes, you could see his arm extending a bit as he went for the blade, and then a lot more as he extended for the touche. And the class was "OK, so?" And Tony went on to explain that as long as he's extending, it's an attack, and neither the opponent nor the ref get to say how his touche got there (by what circular path) so long as he was extending. OK, this is what I now explain to my students as "The Best Of Both Worlds" touche. If I manage to take your blade, my touche. But if I fail to take your blade I continue on, my touche again. Well, that explains a lot about modern foil fencing, and why foilists don't do derobements anymore. I like to point out that type of thinking would get you an L rather quickly in epee, and foil and epee should not be so far about in their thinking. For this I get a lot of blank stairs.

@Donald Badowski It's all called so differently now, by fad rather than fiat. Is it so hard to determine right of way, the fencer whose arm extends first? Maybe with the speed of "today's" Fencer's it's more difficult..or not. Both Fencer's pictured here had plenty of speed. Today's Fencer's have all the skill, but the current rules can turn these bouts into crab like thrust fests. No attack on preparation, no derobement, no stop thrust to take advantage of an opponent's bent arm point dragging advance. It's a game for sure, but many times not too fun to watch.
