In this video, I'm going to talk about polyembryonic seeds. These mango types usually have seeds that have multiple embryos. Among them, there is one that is usually pollinated, and the rest are clones. There has been a trend of planting these in California to get great quality tasting clones that provide better vigor and growth than grafted plants. In California, our grafted plants tend to bloom itself to death and do not grow. While our seedlings could only take as little as 3 to 7 years to bloom. This is about how to identify the non clone for those who want to weed them out. I am actually doing the opposite in my project and selecting for them.

Great information. I was surprised on how seedling leaves have a strong terpene. Especially on how the terpene dissipates quickly when crushed.

Thank you! Yes, it's surprising how fast those oils dissipates I would have thought they linger longer. How is your mango taste/terpene chart going?

@@RichsMangoGarden I've put the chart on hold. I noticed mango flavors, if not all flavors are not linear. Therefore I need to rework it.

Goodluck I would like to see the end result of it. Yes, lots of the flavors do mix. And are not linear especially when you get into the Zill varieties and also the Myanmar combines aspect the Indian and Southeast Asian.

So, I am guessing you are trying to create your own cultivar/variety that is half lemon zest and half Indian type? Looking forward to your success

I'm very interested in Alphonso or Alphonso like flavor group. Hoping to discover something new that grows and fruits well here 😄

@@RichsMangoGarden same here. I have been trying to cross Okrung with Alphonso or Kesar or sonpari 😂 I have one seedling that I feel is promising based on the leaves scent. So hopefully in 5 years I will find out.

Super interested in this subject. I have some sweet tart poly seedlings right now. I've been smelling the leaves but I think my nose is broken lol

Sweet tart is interesting as the smell is not that distinguish unless you are familiar with it. I'd describe it as a much stronger acidic smell but not citrus compared to other mangos if that makes sense. It's not the easiest to tell like a lemonzest. Also the pollinated embryo seems to closely resemble the clones in smell. I believe I have about 10 seedlings but I could only identify 2 of them where one of the embryo clearly is not sweet tart. I also dont consider myself as having the best nose, lol.

@RichsTopGardening thank you. Trying my best to learn all these little tricks to increase my chances. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of experience with many varieties of mangos, so i'm doing even more guessing when trying yo select based on what I think the original smelled like. Thanks for the tips on sweet tart. That's very helpful.

Different mango varieties has different flavor characteristics, sometimes those flavor show up in the smell of the leaves. Indian flavored mangos seem to fall into 2 groups in my opinion, one that is strongly Indian cooking spice and one that piney terpenes but most seems to have a bit of both.

It really depends on what you are trying to do. Most people are trying select for the clonal seedlings and if that is the case just save 2 of them that will mostly likely assure you that u have at least 1 clone. I am selecting for the fertilize seedling and there's really no other way to assure that besides seeing which is different enough by scent and/or growth pattern. All which could subjective if it is not different enough. All other methods is just making a big assumption.

@@RichsMangoGardenhi just curious why you’re going for the fertilized seedlings?

Most mango varieties are suited for more tropical conditions and are chosen to be precocious and slower growing. I'm hoping to find some seedlings that has the vigor and disease resistance for a more Mediterranean climate, along with tastes.

@@RichsMangoGarden ah that’s going to be a long journey, I hope you find one!

Yes, it will be a long process ahah. Only one good advantage we have in California vs more tropical climates are that seedlings bloom in a much shorter time in as little as 3 years vs day a decade.
