This guy is quite literally living my dream of being a self made farmer that grows my two favorite foods; avocados and mangoes lol I always thought it was odd how similar the two fruits were being the Pearish shape with a large seed in the middle you have to cut around but also growing on the tree similarly. Makes me wonder if they’re related and why I love both of them so damn much. I just sprouted my first mango seed and am so excited to grow it. Unfortunately I’ve tried avocado seeds but never get past the first stage of the tooth picks halfway in a cup of water as the water starts to ferment before the seed even sprouts :/ I really want my own fruiting mango and avocado trees but hopefully this mango seed is a good dna that fruits a lot as I don’t have any trees to take clippings from

@@SleepyLizard my first one has grown to about 6 inches high with about 6 leaves while my second one I sprouted about a week ago I just potted and hoping it grows too. I noticed that one of the big main roots was starting to curl when I transplanted it to a bigger pot :/

When I saw the grafted tree, I immediately remembered your recent video about grafting avocados and the fact that another plant could grow from a rootstock later on. The way this mango is grafted - under the first set of leaves - seems like a nice way to prevent that from happening as there is no leaf node to support such growth. Unless mango is the type of plant which sometimes grows another plant from its root. Anyway, I am really happy to see a video about mangoes from you as well. I've always been a huge fan of tropical plants, probably because those are something impossible for me to grow or even come across as I don't live in tropical climate. Mangoes are my favorite of those, so it is no surprise that I tried growing my own plant in a pot, not expecting any fruit, just for the sake of growing it. Unfortunately, all my attempts over the years have failed. I managed to get a plant several times using the first method you showed (although it always took a few weeks rather than just few days), however, the plant itself always stopped growing after the first set of leaves grew and died afterward. I think fungus gnats are the cause, they always appear out of nowhere and cause havoc...
@SleepyLizard4 жыл бұрын
Pepso8P, thanks for the comments. Sometimes when I go to edit the vids I end up cutting something that in retrospect to I should have left in the vid. For example, that seed I had in the plastic bag for 10 days was one of five that I put in bags. The other 4 haven’t even started to sprout yet. I think it’s grate meat that you’re growing tropical fruit trees in your house. Maybe someday you’ll have access to a greenhouse and you’ll get fruit!

I have soo mamy questions but i know your probably very busy so i will only ask two. 1ST QUESTION will a mango grow quicker with the rotting fleshon it? Or will it grow just as quick if i eat the flesh out of it and just crack the seed open it and water it? Last question does the size of the mango fruit itself determine who big its seed will grow to be?For example if i have a 400 gram mango will it end up being a bigged mango tree than a 300 gram mango of the same species because its starting size is bigger or it doesnt really change the rate at which they both grow? THANK YOU SOO MUCHFOR THE VIDEO INFORMATION AND I WOULD BE VERY THANKFUL IF YOU COULD ANSWER MY QUESTIOM AS GOOGLE ISNF VERY HELPFUL
@SleepyLizard2 жыл бұрын
Hi Isaac, I haven't experienced any difference in how fast they grow with either technique. The size of the seed does not determine the eventual size of your tree. It's the DNA of that particular tree that determines when it stops growing.

Where I come from-the UK- store bought mangoes don’t do mangoes justice. They’re all pretty bland with a kinda green taste and they are full of fibre making them extremely messy. Here in the UK if you want a legit good quality sweet mango it’s best to order em on line from a website that specialises in less common types of exotic fruit. I go with my exotic fruit . They are a lot more expensive than store bought mangoes though. I suppose you get what you pay for.

You can put it in a small pot and put it indoors. If you have a good south facing window or indoor porch it should be fine. Just needs to be above 45~ degrees ferenheit. Would it be better to take at least two scythes from the same tree, graft them on to other main stems, and plant them near each other so when they flower, they pollinate each other and give identical fruits to each other?
@SleepyLizard Жыл бұрын
It doesn't work that way. the fruit is determined by the mother tree. Pollination effects the seed inside the fruit. Also, most mango varieties are heterozygous which means that every seed is unique even if it was pollinated by the same variety. there are some exceptions which are known as Polyembryonic varieties which can produce clones

that's a challenge for sure. there are nurseries who sell cuttings online. But I have a better idea: find yourself a polyembryonic variety...they grow true to seed! Nam Duc Mai for example. Just google a list of polyembryonic mango varieties and see if you can find one in the store.

@@SleepyLizard how do you know what kind of mango tree you have? I grew a store bought mango from seed a couple years ago and I am planting it in the ground now and wondering what kind it is.
@SleepyLizard2 жыл бұрын
@@danielsnyder8106 There are two possibilities. If the tree you planted was polyembryonic then you'll get the exact same mango variety as the one you ate. If the tree is not polyembryonic then you'll get a unique never before seen variety of mango (just like when people are born). If you get fruit in year 4 it will have been polyembryonic. You can then compare the way it looks to mangos online and determine the variety. If on the other hand you're 6,7,8 years down the road with no fruit it might take 10 or more and it will be unique.

With mangos you can try and find a polyembryonic variety. They don't need to be grafted. Altufo and Nam Duc Mai for example.

Yesterday bought two 🥭 to try from the farmers market here in Texas, loved them. I was wondering how to grow them so I could have them growing from seed. Saw your video and absolutely loved the instructions from this video. I’m a new subscriber, and want you to know I have written down the process from your information. By the way I am also growing lemons, oranges, lychees and avocados from seeds. I love growing plants, and where I live it doesn’t have too much cold here until December to March. Then starts warming up quickly by April. On the cold nights I bring them inside, my question is: When do I need to plant them and how do I keep them from the cold since they are able to be planted outside? I live in the North Eastern part of Texas near Oklahoma.

I did grow a mango tree from seed; started it last year just to see if it would grow. It's about a foot and half tall now, indoors and will be an indoor plant (cold, cold Winters here). I wonder, is there is a way to keep it small enough to keep as a houseplant? I have been observing it as it grows in the warm sunny window, and it pushes up new leaves every so often. Would pinching off the new leaves keep it from getting much taller? Would it hurt the tree? Has this ever been done? I don't expect fruit but I do like my tree.
@SleepyLizard3 жыл бұрын
Yep! You have it exactly right. Pinch off the new growth and that will encourage lateral growth and thicken the stem. What part of the world are you in? (what cold part of the world? brrr)
