Last week I announced that I wanted to taste mangoes with other mango lovers, and it did not take long for me to get the opportunity to welcome a mango lover to our Osho garden. We are meeting Bart for the first time, though we knew him from before from mango groups, and this is also the first time we are getting to taste our naturally grown Angie, Julie and Coconut Cream mangoes with neither irrigation nor fertilizer inputs. In this video we are comparing the tastes of each of these mangoes and also compare the taste of our home grown mangoes with the mangoes from different farms that we both have eaten in the past. We added the ratings for entertainment only, not to be taken too seriously.
Disclaimer: We are creating mango tastings for the 2nd year in a row and feel like sharing the same disclaimer because we still see people arguing about taste. Like many things in life that cannot be ever measured in a lab, taste is one of them. It is purely a subjective experience involving one's cultural conditioning. Exposure to certain types of foods during our childhood days, special liking of other types of fruit or candies and finding hints of them in mangoes play very heavy on the type of mangoes one likes or dislikes.
Also, the same mango variety grown in different parts of Florida (or the world) will taste different depending on changes in microclimate, annual rainfall, soil health, soil mineral and salt content, fertigation regimen (irrigation+fertilization), etc. so blanket statements about a certain variety's taste aren't welcome. Lastly, mango picked early / not fully mature vs picked at the peak maturity changes how they ripen off of tree; often mangoes picked green, hard & immature eventually change color and look nice but will not get optimal sweetness (brix) or the complexity of flavor that makes mango such a unique and tasty fruit.
Please don’t make assumptions about a variety based on your tasting of a mediocre tasting fruit! Try fruit from different places, different microclimates at different stages of ripeness.
We don't think mangoes can be objectively rated from 1 to 10, as many variables play into it, but for the fun of it we have done it in some of our videos.

Awesome tasting session and I really enjoyed the back-and-forth chat especially about not ever being able to replace the 10 of being a child, climbing through the tree and finding that awesome Mango! Enjoy the personal stories and the banter back-and-forth

I am about an hour south of Deltona, and on the coast but will definitely check with him for overwintering success! I very much appreciate your videos with friends or just you and I am excited to see progress of your soil biome approach to raising mangoes . And you put me on to giant milkweed for the monarchs an unexpected bonus!

Looks Like I'm buying a coconut cream mango & ice cream cause of dwarf sizeing

I like the Coconut Cream mango taste but it does not necessarily grow to a dwarf size. For us it grew laterally instead of vertical so we made the tree into 8ft tall and 12 ft wide with some pruning. I like Dwarf Hawaiian and Julie more than ice cream, they both grow slow and can be kept compact.

I come from India with hundreds of trees in our ancestral property. We savor mangos as mangos with its distinct aroma and flavors. The beauty and the uniquness of Mango is no one variety is similar to another one. If I have to enjoy a fruit why to go to find a coconut in a Mango? Have coconut and enjoy then?

As you beautifully noticed, mango uniqueness is in the diversity and complexity of flavors. Tasting mango tastes with hints of different fruits (and even flowers, spices and candies!) have become a sport, like tasting different wines. But for us to find hints of different fruits is like finding hints of flavors in a well-cooked curry: the most important aspect is that flavors have to be well-balanced and make sense together. There are hints of coconut flavors in Indian varieties too, it's just people who have been eating them all their lives don't notice subtle things that become so prominent for first timers :)

Julie taste first before you plant a tree. Not a top 10 mango.
