“I don’t practice I just play” is great advice. I’ll keep that in mind ❤

There are times when structured practice is important, like when you are learning a new skill, or when you are getting a new song up to tempo, or you are getting some new lick patterns for your vocabulary under your fingers. But it is also extremely important to USE all this stuff musically, like Mango says. Play with the things you learn. Play songs that use them. Practice improvising with them. Learn your scale patterns musically by skipping notes (3rds in septatonic major and minor keys are major harmonic building blocks), or skipping strings, or playing runs of 3 or 4 notes, (a lotta licks are based on that kinda thing); and of course, improvising. I've gotten that takeaway not just from Mango, but from a lot of really good sources on how to play the guitar. I've been doing more of it in the past year, and it has helped.

is not great advice sorry, its terrible, if you actually want to get good, split your guitar time into practice technique and concepts, and playing fun shit.

@@amenbrother8785 it depends. I used to just practice to try and get better at playing and to memorize certain songs. But I agree that splitting time between practice and fun is ideal. I discover new ideas and nuances in my play style from just messing around and playing for fun/the joy of it

Exactly; just make music rather than make robotic notes. Once again, you're a gem

I agree! All of that advice is excellent! Learning music should be fun! Play it to have fun, not to be good! By having fun, you will BECOME good! Long live Ukraine!

Finding a good pick is true, i played for 5 months with flimsy beginner picks and a standard medium, then bought 15 different picks, the Big stubby picks are definitely my favorite. They wont make you better, but if it feels good to you, you will feel like you aren't getting lost on the strings unless its your fault.

1mm and 1.14mm Star Picks for me. They got kinda hard to find for a while but I recently got a 50 pack of each from Musicians Friend at I think $20.00 per so I'm set for a minute. She did drop a few wise points IMO.

If they feel good to you, the you actually will get better! You'll be more comfortable and it will make playing less akward.

I should probably change my strings more often, usually change them once every couple years. But I don't play as much as I should. Trying to play more often, and get used to using a pick. I never liked them because they always would turn in hand or I'd drop them. I also use the Dunlop nylon picks with the grippy bumps, still can't get used to strumming with a pick, though.

Haven't tried it myself, but Mark Speer from Khruangbin uses flatwound strings and says that the benefit is that the sound remains the same even if you use the same set of strings for years.
