If your wondering why this video has appeared on the front page of my channel when we are quite a way through the series it's because I couldn't get the video out of unlisted mode and it was only accessible via the playlist / direct link. I have finally managed to so it can be picked up by youtube. Sorry for the confusion :) And thank you to all for your kind comments and support.

I've been using desktop CAD programs for 37 years and have read all sorts of "how to" books, watched a staggering number of instructional tutorials, and just muddled through all sorts of instructional classes for various programs. None of them came close to giving me a basic idea of how to begin as did this video. The best aspect of all was the sense that "I can see how this works." As an architect, my two primary programs were DataCAD and SketchUp. As a budding 3D printer novice, you've made me certain that FreeCAD will be my primary modeling software. Thank you. Thank you.

1. I read the reviews bellow and agree with all of them. in two words Really GREAT. 2. I am a System engineer in the high tech and made (as hobby) some designs using SweetHome 3D, a friend told me about the FreeCAD and I read the onlines manuals, I have never been so confused as if it a rocket science. I surrender to watch video ( i watched one (not yours it was OK). 3. After I saw your first Video I understood, that the best and shortest way to get started with this is by watching your great (explanatory, simple, with examples etc..) videos. And never going back to the 'Documentation'. 4. About documentation- Developers engineers have a problem to understand what is the audience and their needs. It could be very useful to have a text file (PDF) that lists all you actions happening on the video: Like a table with two columns activity target: Method to achieve Setting Display preferred icon size Main Toollbar.Edit.Preference Left-Click General[Application].Size of toolbar Icon. Drop Down.Select Medium (24px)

Thank you so much for this course, I'm starting on 3D printing, and chosen FreeCAD as a part building platform. This course helped me a lot, I'm cuming from CGI (Caligari and Sculpt 4D Commodore Amiga, TrueSpace PC and finally Cinema 4D PC) so it's not like starting new. Cheers

Great to hear your enjoying the series. What did you use on the old Amiga (1200 or 4000?) I came from imagine3D then Lightwave on that platform, I loved that machine! Truespace finally made me change from Amiga to PC and then I want off to 3DSMax then Rhino. The Amiga was the most creative platform for it's day, I miss that machine (even have some emulation tutorials on my channel as that was what I originally made this channel for lol) The Amiga still has a huge following.

@@MangoJellySolutionsYes I'm 51 and my first computer was a Timex Sinclair 1000 (1982), than moved to ZX Spectrum 48K, back then I was already programing in Basic and did some graphical material on the ZX. When the Amiga computer was launched, it was a BIG leap in computer graphics, first I bought the Amiga 500 (still have it), and then the Amiga 3000 (sold it), it was a very expensive machine, but amazing too, used Caligari and Sculp 4D. My last Commodore machine was the Amiga 1200. Moved then to PC and used TrueSpace 4 and 7 for a long time, used 3DSMax for a while, but since Cinema 4D came out, never looked to another software. Now I just want to turn my ideas a reality thru 3D printing. Thank you for your answer. Merry Christmas.

Just a note for future viewers of this video. As of today (2022-06-22) the download page shows 0.20 as the current stable version. I think it was updated a couple days ago. This should take away any potential anxiety about downloading a development version versus the publicly released "Current stable version".

Just wanted to point out that, in most Linux distributions, there should be a way to install software directly from repositories without downloading with a browser. I believe you're using Ubuntu, or something with the Cinnamon Desktop. There used to be PPA repositories. You can read in the Freecad Wiki about it. The advantage of using PPA instead of the depicted method in the video is that the OS would search for newer version in the repository, and keep your FreeCAD up-to-date. The problem is that PPA are development versions, prone to instabilities. The fact that yu downloaded a locked development version before a release helps with stability. But I'd do official version from a Repo, and get the most recent stable version, updated automatically by the OS

Hello, Please am new to 3D printing. But i believe this is the best ever tutorials anywhere in the world. This tutorials is so clear for me to understand that l mostly have no questions to ask. I have only these question to ask for now, which are; 1. How can l save my work to G code file? And the other question is; 2. What is the difference between G code and Stl files. Thank you
@boozle8125
@boozle8125 3 ай бұрын
gcode is produced by the slicer, and details to the printer what movements it needs to make in order to create the object. an stl file is the model file, containing the 3d geometry of the object. You need to take the stl file, and convert it to a gcode file tailored to your printer using a slicing program like Cura or Prusaslicer.

thank you so much for this tutorial! I honestly thought it was going to be an absolute pain to use, but the UI is misleading! Please bear with me if you have this in one of the latter videos, im just beginning to watch, in freecad is there a way to use a model as the base for your sketch? As in "grabbing" the geometries from the model into the new sketch? Or do i have to draw it as needed? Much appreciated for your time to make these!
@MangoJellySolutions
@MangoJellySolutions Ай бұрын
Ah yes, I have covered it but with STL, STEP is a lot easier as the edges are defined and you can reference them in a sketch using the external geometry tool and shape binders. STL are more tricky as they have no edges that can be picked unless they are converted then you get a mass of eyes and faces . In my collection for the series I have the reverse engineering a impeller, you should be able to find it in the play list.

On the mouse settings on windows 10 version not all the features are shown on the template popup when in CAD mode which is the default. Some guidance here would really be appreciated. I initially struggled with conflicts between the tutorial and the application and then realized that these TUTS were for Ver 0.18 /19, whereas my downloaded FreeCAD was ver 0.21.1. Very happy to find your TUT for 0.20 /0.21, but conflicts from the get-go, for e.g. on your TUT (FreeCAD 0.20 For Beginners | 1 | Setup, preferences and navigation), the Edit /Preference / has tabs all the way across the top - you actually scroll to the right to get to "units". I don't have that., I have General /Document/Selection/Cache/Notifications/Area/Report View. The rest of the general page bears little resemblance. Where am I going wrong. I am delighted with your TUTS and can't wait to get moving. Take care - Steve, South Africa.

My Combo View box keeps expanding into a full horizontal screen on top of Sketch Screen, after I shrink it. Does it require some sort of locking dock ?

I'm trying to basically make a bunch of parts to put together a large robotics project. I'm starting with just a part of it, which is basically just an arm of the robot (it will have multiple arms for multiple tasks so just starting with one arm) and since med/large servos are super expensive I found a way to make my own cheap, so each servo I use will also be broken down into parts. I already designed 1 servo in freecad, but it was a year ago and I have been using fusion 360 so I'm super rusty now. Also I want to be able to move this arm within freecad to show my friend how it's going to move after I construct the whole thing for real. I never learned that part before. So my question is, would this be a good tutorial series for brushing up on things and also being able to put all the parts together to make an assembly or animation or w/e they call it in freecad, and if not can anyone point me to one? I don' t want to commit a bunch of time to the wrong tutorial for the task at hand, and I don't know a lot of the terminology for what I'm trying to do so it's difficult to just look at the titles and know if it's a good fit, TIA!

Can it be used by someone who is completely new to cad modelling and knows basics of coding
@MangoJellySolutions
@MangoJellySolutions 2 ай бұрын
Yes it can, no knowledge of CAD is needed, and no coding is needed at all but macros can be written if you want to get into playing with creating your own tools.

Thank you for putting on the information. At 14.56 / 24.03 the means to turn around the subject is seen - two rounded arrows - like the pisces sign. I have not found this on my version which is Freecad 0 20 2. Can you tell me how to find the two arrows please?

Hi, I'm an auto cad user and have moved over to FreeCad. I wan't to learn to use FreeCAD to produce 2D architectural drawings. I'm not really interested in drawing stuff for a CNC machine or 3D printer. Please help me find the correct video tutorials :)

I did not realize FreeCAD would run on lynux ! Would it run on Rasberrian OS then ? I'm thinking a Raspberry Pi 4 might run it ? Or maybe not ? What would be the oldest pi that could run FreeCAD ?
@MangoJellySolutions

I have heard of people running it on raspberry pi but I don't know how successful. But, I run it on a very old laptop before the first raspberry pi came out. So a raspberry pi 4 is more powerful than what I am using lol

I'm very grateful for taking the time to make a tutorial. I would ask that for future videos, you could add a bit volume. It is nearly impossible for me to hear what you're saying on my laptop without 125% volume, which is really scary since I've blown speakers that way before. Also, you've been talking about workbenches for six minutes, but you haven't explained what a workbench is. :)
@MangoJellySolutions
@MangoJellySolutions Жыл бұрын
The volume is has been corrected in future videos and the quality is much better as I purchased a decent microphone. Ah yes I forget to add that. A workbench is a area with a set of tools to do specific jobs. Most workbench tools can be used in others. Workbenches such as sheet metal have tools specific for that purpose where as others can be mixed and match with others.

Just used fullscreen mode on windows 11. not a good idea as down menus stop working, so i couldn’t even exit it the same way i entered it. Alt+F11 worked. Some newer or laptop keyboards may require the „fn“ key for „f11“ to even work.

Good day from Mexico.. I hope that you will help me. I am on Ubuntu 20.04 , with FreeCAD 0.18 . I have not been able to install 0.20 . quite different from your 0.20 . That leaves a lot of ?? One small item which I could use to test my printer, and use in general are stove (cooker knobs). would you set up a model file for me, and send it? The 3D resin would be much stronger - especially if the handle is solid. I will send the measurements. Thank you.

At about 14: 15 you were rotating the circle and it appears to be rotating around a point not on the circle. I assume that it was rotating around the origin. How can we turn on the origin or a grid so that the center of rotation is obvious?
