Freecad has made huge leaps recently. For most users it is much better than those almost free alternatives there. I would sell my adsk stocks at this point.

Great, then I can buy them cheaply from you. There's more to being free to be able to compete. Autodesk will do just fine, for now.

I’m trying to figure out if building an open source true 4-axis CNC toolpath generator is a realistic project for me to jump into, then expand into true 5-axis. Only then might autodesk start sweating a little.

Nice video! I'm glad to see FreeCAD getting a little well deserved attention on its latest release milestone. Good demo of the corrected topological naming problem. And good tip/trick for the trim tool.

FreeCAD is looking pretty good now! If I ever see a good reason to leave Fusion360 I'll be moving to FreeCAD for sure. Let's hope it keeps progressing. I still see a lot of QOL improvements that are lacking, but it's definitely getting there!

FreeCAD has been making great strides! It's always exciting to see open-source software evolve. Hopefully, those quality-of-life improvements will continue to roll out, making the transition even more appealing. Keep an eye on its progress! 😊

Id go after solid works blender or fusions clientele. Modernizing the User Interface The current UI, reminiscent of early 2000s computer software, can be off-putting to new users and those familiar with other CAD programs. A reskinned color palette and customizable UI would greatly improve the overall user experience. Robust Error Handling and Prediction Algorithms Proper error handling and prediction algorithms. easier said than done but the key here is preventing frustration. By detecting potential error states before an operation is complete, the software should warn users and help them familiarize themselves with the limitations. This would significantly enhance the software's value and usability.
@tunedstylespecs28 күн бұрын
Well solidworks and fusion are great softwares but expensive, so I am going away from them. Solidworks costs thousands per year and fusion from 250 went past 600 for a yearly subscription. I have been doing CAD from years but know that a stable version of freecad is ready I will support the developers. I know that the softwares have free version but slowly they are limiting what is offered in free, or if you want to use your designs for profit you have to pay them. Blender is a different type of CAD software for animation, game development, rendering etc but is is also free and developed by the community just like freecad.

For my 3d printing hobby projects, this fix alone probably makes Freecad a viable alternative to Fusion! The only other thing I've really missed in Freecad is selective padding of sketch features (i.e. extruding only a part of a sketch, instead of the whole thing). Is that in the new version? It's something I could definitely work around if I have to, but I'd prefer not to.
@ColeFunseth28 күн бұрын
I'm pretty sure you can pad specific parts of a sketch in 1.0.0 now. It's not as intuitive as in fusion but the capability is there now.

I have been working with inventor, fusion and onshape for quite some time but Freecad is where I would rather invest my time now as the subscricption cost is constantly increasing which makes me feel uncomortable for the future. In addition they slowly remove cababilities to force you to go to the paid version. Also fusion and onshape workflow is on cloud so despite having a fast pc it is still relatively slow to respond althought there are a lot more user friendly and easy to comprehend. Freecad requires from new users to alter their workflow a bit.

@@tunedstylespecs That are exactly the reasons I switched to FreeCAD. As a do a lot of 3D printing and electronic repairs, including repairs where mechanical parts have to be replaced (that are most times weird formed shapes that are broken), the use of CAD is really needed. FreeCAD gives me enough tools to do all I need, and then some more. Since I switched I never looked back.

Arrays and fillets... However trivial it may sound for an average 3d printer user EASE of creating such features is going to be the decisiv3 factor in choosing modeling software.

I think the toponame problem is far far from solved. IMO, it is sorted in some few specific cases, and is alive and present in the majority of real life situations. Look: I'm not a hater, I actively use Freecad as my main CAD program, but I saw very little improvement in the topological name problem. I'd like Freecad would somehow ask us to confirm/change when he is renaming primitives, or let us rename primitives.

That's a pretty common gripe about open source stuff. People programming something out of interest usually make something that's just what they're interested in. If they're not UI people that aspect can be pretty lackluster.
