3.8L V6 Mustang Tune Up [Timelapse]

Replacing the spark plugs, ignition coil, spark plug wires and air filter on our 2003 Mustang. The car had a stutter at take off and a dead spot around 1800 RPM. We removed the no name ignition coil and Autolite plugs and replaced them with OEM Motorcraft parts. What a difference! Never use Autolite plugs in a Ford.

I just got a new motorcraft coil pack and it seems to be already faulty. I got a code for cylinder 5 misfire and when I tested the coilpack, cylinder 1 wasn’t misfiring when I pull the wire out but every other cylinder did. I’ve changed everything in my mustang with little to no fix.

Nice job. Question; have you ever changed the cabin air filter on your car? I was told to change mines, i've never heard of cabin filter on the new edge.

I believe you're right. I'm pretty sure the new edge mustang doesn't have a cabin air filter.

Our model of mustangs dont have cabin air filters, when i first got mine i figured that'd be the easiest fix i could do at the time but found out it doesnt have one

Hi. How often a tune up is needed on a daily driver? I was told every 20 to 30k miles.

It really depends on the vehicle. Most modern cars have intervals of 50k - 100k miles on tune ups, but older vehicles (especially carbureted ones) may need one much sooner than that. Unless you are having issues, I would recommend following the manufacturers maintenance schedule. If you have a Ford, you can put your VIN in on www.ford.com/support/maintenance-schedule/ and it will give you a full maintenance schedule for your specific vehicle.

any recommendations on what I should do for a tune up on a 96 3.8 mustang with 161k miles? I did an oil change about 3 months ago but that’s it. car runs and drives fine with no check engine light. has a semi weak start up after running a few errands. any idea?

I'd have a part store check the battery to make sure that its not nearing the end of its life and that it has the right cold cranking amps for the car. Checking the spark plugs never hurts either at that mileage. If you find someone put Autolite plugs in, replace them with Motorcraft.

I replaced the intake and spark plugs amd wires and now it crank no start. No codes. I have spark and fuel. Im lost!!

Make sure all your spark plug wires are running to the correct cylinder. Also check all of the electrical connectors and vacuum lines by the intake. I knocked off one of the EGR vacuum lines which caused it to run rough, but you may have a loose sensor wire on the intake or throttle body. Some of those sensors being unplugged will cause the car not to start.

@@HufflerGarage I pulled a diagram of the cylinder layout. The layout reads 1,2,3 on the passenger side and 4,5,6 on driver side. So I put each plug into the cylinder that correspond to the number of the coil In the coil pack. Or do the numbers on the coil pack represent firing order and not cylinder number?
