The role of mangrove forests in providing coastal zone stability and protection against flooding is increasingly recognized. The specific root, stem, and canopy system of mangroves is highly efficient in attenuating waves and currents. The sheltered environment created by a healthy mangrove forest offers great sedimentation potential in case a sediment source is available. However, the once-abundant mangrove forests in the Mekong coastal delta are becoming rapidly depleted. Especially along the Mekong eastern and southeastern coast, mangrove degradation and rapid coastline erosion are observed at many locations.
The visit is at Lai Hoa village, Vinh Chau district, Soc Trang province in March 2022. This mangrove forest has been squeeze since 2010, and the local authority has been trying to replant it but it was not of a success. Previously the mangrove was about 200-300meters far from the coast. Sea dyke is still under construction. IUCN proposed to grow more mangrove inside the sea dyke are (left on the photo), and try to help improve the shrimp productivity so that they can save some land for mangrove forest.
