Unit repairing is an integral part of Advance Wars, what I assume Mangs does believe is that it only should be done if absolutely neccessary or if it's important for a given strategy, some players seem to overuse this mechanic which results in units being taken out of position and eat income unnecessarily

Taking 2 HP off a recon (800 G) and losing 4-6 HP off your infantry sounds like a good trade but infantry are worth more than their 1000 G price would suggest. Throw away too many like this and you'll be in a bad position

While Grit should always try to maximize the longevity of his infantry so they can protect the indirects, I notice that it's even more important on this map, with only three bases for production. If you lose too many infantry, you're both capped on how quickly you can replace them--and doing so prevents you from deploying other needed units.

It's interesting just how valuable Unit Count is, not just total money on the field. Especially in Fog of War, the map presence that having more units gives you lets you scout the enemy easier and block or trap their units in return. I wonder if it's ever worthwhile to retreat Infantry to heal on cities. Maybe in a situation where you are very limited on bases compared to your income?
@Kantbei
@Kantbei 2 жыл бұрын
At higher levels in awbw, this is a fairly common move. Of course this doesn't mean heal up every inf, and there cna be cases when it will screw you over such as delaying your tank timings, but in general repairs are viewed favorably if it doesn't disrupt key builds.
@rompevuevitos222
@rompevuevitos222 Жыл бұрын
Each unit is another target that must be taken down, it doesn't matter if a unit deals 50 or 200 damage, they still have to spend an entire turn to dish it out. So if the unit deals like 8 to infantry, any infantry is as good of a meat shield as any regardless of HP Let's say you have a neo tank, but the path is blocked by 3 infantry. That's at LEAST 3 turns your neotank was out of service, and it only costed the enemy 3000. It's why retreating to heal is not as valuable, there's no point in removing a unit for 1 or more turns just to save up a small amount when they could be providing value by just taking up space

Mangs needs to play on larger maps. Just a few squares wider and/or taller can change how certain COs function. Fuel cost becomes a concern, units spread out and the player has to micromanage smaller battlegroups more, and players are much more likely to infiltrate small attack forces behind enemy lines. If you play on small maps all the time you're making the games more predictable and less challenging.

10:50 Attacking the Recon with the infantry from the forest, I get. It'll keep it from one-shotting healthy infantry, and the forest gives some cover from the counter attack. It's on a shoal too, so you get a good value attack. I don't even mind revealing the artillery. It's not like your opponent isn't expecting artillery. Attacking it from the shoal, though? That was a mistake. He should've kept it one space back on the plain. With every other infantry in that area in place, the recon still wouldn't have been able to hit the artillery. Then, mangs would be forced to either a) hit one of the infantry, at which point the artillery could just blast it away, maybe leaving it with 1 HP if it was sat on the city or forest, or b) retreat the recon, which allows Grit to keep his healthy infantry and reposition his artillery. Maybe not the best course of action, but with a recon in the area and only the artillery as an answer, there's not much you can do. Yeah, a stealthy approach would've been better, and looking at the rest of the match, that was something he definitely had problems with.

So in that first recon attack on the shores I assumed your opponent was trying to box you away from the artillery. This would allow the artillery to still operate in the north (otherwise you could have circled the infantry). But then he combined his infantry in the north, moved the arty south and kept attacking with inf. No idea.

I think both Max and Grit are equally powerful in the hands of an experienced player. But if two newbies were to play this match up, I think the Max player would have the edge as it should be clear that you will have to be aggressive early on. But the right player on Grit will have a chance to try and prevent this
@TheFinalChapters

I'd argue that a newbie Grit player would have the advantage because it's a lot easier to hide in forests and snipe than it is to keep track of where threats are.

It could be interesting to do those videos with the people you played with, that way instead of saying "I don't why he did this, it was pretty weird" you could ask the player and have him explaining why he did some of his plays, having two point of views would be rad

I've played as, and against a handful of Grits so far. The biggest Issue I have, and see, is the balance of indirects to directs. I make to many directs which makes it easy for my opponent to break me, and my opponents make to many indirects, and a good recon or two, is enough to break through them. Do you have any general advice for balancing the two as Grit?

at 10.30, i think its kinda good idea due direct power difference, if possible, to attack early on the reckon atleast once as well, especialy if ur words are correct that the reckon can destroy 1 unit entirely if the reckon attacks, because the game ist entirely based on power but also positioning, and truth be told, aslong u cant oneshot, ur units will suffer even from the defence part in trading blows, i would say the first attack was a very good trade, even if its just 1 hp, because aslong u cant wipe it, it will save him turns, the second attempt i would not be doing personaly, nor revealing the arty tbh, but the first strike on reckon atleast once is actualy a good move, because that can make em linger for 1 hp if u attack them at their full hp, meaning u might get stuck pushing in that logic
