FDNY takes no chances. First due units on the scene immediately transmitsa 10-75 upon arrival. Sometimes the fire is small but they call out the alarm right away to get the additional resources on the way to be on the safe side.

Tbird1549 in most areas of the U.S. they close the roads, for the safety of the firefighters, but in major cities like NYC, they would have to detour two blocks in either direction, but those streets already have that type of volume of traffic as well. I really don’t see the need for the residents and workers in NYC to have POV’s, as they have one of the most thorough and encompassing mass transit systems in the world!

A fireproof building, how is that possible?
@BarryNYC-28

Valerie Bargewell There is a material called gypsum which is used for the interior walls of many buildings. These walls are actually boards and are referred to as gypsum board or even wall board. Oftentimes, guys in the construction trades will erroneously refer to gypsum board as "sheet rock." But sheet rock is actually just a brand name for a particular type of gypsum board. Anyway, the gypsum material, along with water and other ingredients used in the manufacture of the boards, is not literally fire proof. What it does is convert the heat from a fire to steam. Therefore, it contains or confines a fire by preventing heat transfer, particularly heat transfer by way of conduction. And as long as no fresh oxygen is introduced to the fire (through open windows, open doors or even air vents) then the fire will be confined to a particular section. Gypsum boards have a one, two or three hour rating. The ratings differ. Depending on the extent of the manufacture of these boards, these can contain a fire for one, two or three hours. Anything beyond the particular rating and the gypsum board is no good. I hope this answers your question.

Valerie Bargewell...a building is only as ‘fireproof’ as its contents. The Winecoff Hotel in Atlanta was an excellent example. A ‘fireproof’ hotel, built of brick, full of combustible furniture and wall coverings. It caught fire during the night and over 100 people died. But the building was still fireproof. There was little or no structural damage and the building is still standing today at the corner of Peachtree and Ellis in Atlanta. You can see it on Google Earth if you do a street view.

Ramsey love Elevators are recalled to the ground level for Firemen to use. They are designed to come down automatically when certain devices (smoke detectors or sprinkler water flow switches) are activated. It appears that this building is required by New York City Fire Code to have a Fire Life Safety Director (FLSD) and it is his or her responsibility to ensure that elevators have in fact been recalled to the ground floor for Fire Department use. There is a citywide key (#2642) that the Fire Life Safety Directors use which can bring elevators down if these do not come down automatically for some reason. When elevators are recalled they are in Phase One mode. Noone on the upper floors will be able to us them. If they press the elevator call button, the elevator will not respond at all. Once the Firemen get inside the elevator they will place the elevator in Phase Two mode. This means that Firemen have complete control of the elevator. After that, they will ride the elevator to the upper floors and battle the fire. I hope that this answered your question. (By the way, I'm not a NYC Fireman but I am a Fire Life Safety Director).

just hookup trucks and hydrant to standpipe at base of building and upstairs hookup to the other e d a few floors below the fire floor and work your way up with water. 9/11 the towers had obvious structural damage from the planes so all plumbing and standpipes were cutoff at top. no real plan b if that happens unfortunately....
