I am thrilled you guys are discussing this masterpiece which I was privileged to see opening night at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood in 1986 as big Michael Mann fan at the time, an incredible experience I will never forget! Delighted to have it on VHS, DVD Special Edition & now remastered on Blu-ray which really looks fantastic, I found Brian Cox's Hannibal better than Anthony Hopkins role as amazing as it is.

Tom Noonan is the greatest actor to never really break out as a major star. He's amazing and turns up in lots of my favorite films. Also Brian Cox as Hannibal is an amazing performance, they should have had him in a few more scenes and we'd have never seen Hopkins in that role years later. You guys should review " The Pledge " with Jack Nicholson. Amazing movie

Btw Noonan is indeed a very good actor. I think he also has a short role in the movie heat. Even if you don't see him his voice is so recognizable..underrated actor indeed.. In the making of manhunter he explains how he approached his role in manhunter. Nobody of the cast got to see him until they meet him in the movie for the first time to get a more realistic reaction out of the other actors

Iron Butterfly's "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" is one of the most sinister-sounding "love songs" of all time. It's creepy, transgressional grandeur was used to perfection in the climactic scene of _Manhunter._

So great to see a review from people who loved this gem as much as I did. One of my favorite scenes is, well actually two scenes that bookend the story - at the beginning, Will Graham is on the beach with his son, and they're trying to protect a nest of sea turtle eggs. It's kind of an act of faith on Will's part. At the end (I'm paraphrasing) his wife or son asks "what about the turtles?" and Will says "They almost all made it." Cue the end credits.

Manhunter is underrated. Good story, well acted. 5 yrs before Anthony Hopkins & the Lambs. Also “Year of the Dragon” is under appreciated. If someday it’s decided to continue the “Phantasm” movies...Tom Noonan would be a great choice to play the “Tall Man”.

I saw _Manhunter_ in the theater when in first showed. We didn't have police procedurals back then so it gobsmacked me. To this day "Hello, Will" are a pair of the creepiest words I have ever heard, thanks to Brian Cox. It is a classic; all meat, no gristle. As an aside, Graham chose a Charter Arms .44 Special loaded with Glaser Safety Slugs because in the book he was unable to stop Garret Jacob Hobbs with his .38 before the killer carved on his own daughters. GJH is referenced by Lecter/Lecktor in their last phone conversation. Unrelated to the book and film, a very close friend of mine carried exactly that weapon and load because it was a go-to for stopping power in 80s America. Also, the Son of Sam wielded a Charter Arms .44 Special to deadly effect. As a closer, I can't say how much I respect Stephen Lang as an actor. Freddie Lounds, Ike Clanton in _Tombstone,_ Charles Winstead in _Public Enemy,_ he is a laudable chameleon.

The bullets Will Graham uses are Glaser safety slugs. Each round contains an amount of lead shot. They're designed to cause massive damage to tissue but have very little penetration when they strike harder objects, they won't even penetrate drywall/plasterboard, making them a safer round to use in law enforcement.

I love the whole 80s vibe this film has including the soundtrack. You did mention the song in the end sequence but I’d be interested to know what you guys think of the soundtrack in general (Shriekback, etc.) as it has a very powerful presence throughout the film. I felt it created much of the atmosphere.

Thomas Harris’ books were amazing. I read Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs, and Manhunter was a better adaptation of the novel than the movie starring Ed Norton. 😊😊😊

33:54 My "Hey, I know that guy" moment from the movie (bedsides when I realized that the main character played Grisholm in CSI) was when I noticed that one of the investigators during the "boardroom" scene was Bob "The Bulldog" Briscoe from Frasier! It was funny to see him younger and with hair 😆 And in the same scene was the "my strong hand" dude from Scary Movie 2, lol. But, honestly, you guys blew my mind with the revelation of who the reporter guy was. NEVER would have made that connection!! Wow! MASSIVE difference!

I saw this movie in college during its theatrical release and I was mesmerized by the performances and the films attention to detail. William Peterson was coming off the equally brilliant To Live And Die In LA, and his performance is light years ahead of Ed Norton's surprisingly uninspired take on the Will Graham character. Silence of the Lambs gets all the pub, but this film is simply better in every way, shape, and form. Brian Cox plays Lector as a living, breathing human being whereas Hopkins' Lector is a cartoon character living in a cartoonish correctional facility. In terms of menacing characters, there is no viable comparison between Buffalo Bill and the Tooth Fairy. Tom Noonan oozes danger on both an emotional and physical (e.g., Noonan is 6'7") level whereas the Buffalo Bill character is depicted as being odd, unstable, and reclusive. I'm not a big fan of Top 10 lists, but I would rank Manhunter as 1 of my Top 10 favorite films.

lector wrote the note on the tp from the code in the newspaper. they were sending codes and using a book as a cypher so lector wrote it out having deciphered a newspaper personals ad .BTW lots of love from my hubby and i big fans !

No, The Tooth Fairy wrote on the TP cos he says he wrote the note on tp so Hannibal can get rid of it easily if necessary. The TP msg tells Hannibal how he can write back to The Fairy in code in the Lonely Hearts section of The Tattler, but Hannibal disposes of that part of the message leading to detectives racing against time trying to decipher the code while Hannibal's out of his cell. I can only guess that they only check Hannibal's outgoing mail, not his incoming mail?

Early one morning crossing rural Missouri, I stopped at a small, out of the way convenience store, that was utterly deserted. As I'm walking from my car, I think "this looks like the kind of place where the killer in some horror movie would waylay unsuspecting travelers." Then I walked in the door, and what song is playing? Inna Gadda Da Vida. I watched my back very carefully as I got my snack and coffee... But yeah, such a great movie. I don't know how many times I've watched it. The pathos of Graham, the tragedy of Dolarhyde, the creepy hacker/social engineering Lector. The later Red Dragon was so disappointing, it felt like a soulless process of milking the Lector cash cow. Something I've come to appreciate later about both Manhunter and Silence of the Lambs since watching Mindhunter is that Crawford is based on the same person as Ford from that show. To me, it makes the "Does this kind of understanding make you uncomfortable" scene feels kinda like as Graham rides the edge he's becoming a bit of one of the monsters Crawford studied, and that line is kind of Graham doing a Lector move on Crawford.

Just saw this for first time 4 days ago, as a massive Silence/lambs fan I now think this is better. Its got a much deeper character aspect, you really get concerned for Graham as he gets deeper into it. Brian Cox was subtley menacing and more believable than Hopkins to be honest. Noticed Dollarhydes death gave him 'blood wings' at the end, finally becoming the Dragon. I looked up films Noonan was in after seeing Robocop 2 and being very impressed with him. Incredible actor with a creepy look. The scene where he imagines his blind 'date' cheating on him is one of the most intense things I've ever seen. Also loved how the reporter was a major jerk so when he becomes hostage you're sorta like ''meh, fk him had it coming''

After watching your review earlier, I knew I had to seek this film out and experience it for myself.. And after having just finished watching it, I have to say that I'm glad I did. Brian Cox was a great choice as Hannibal. He did quite a lot with very little screen time. Now I am left questioning the what if. If he returned to the role in the following film, with his more grounded in reality version of the character, would it have become the classic film that Sir Anthony Hopkins's version ultimately became, would the eventual remake have even been made?

I adore this film. The atmosphere and 80s aesthetic is gorgeous and Brian Cox is the epitome of less is more. Only really follows the first third of the book which spends a lot of time delving into the mind and history of the tooth fairy. However what Mann did with this adaptation was for the best. A classic that really is unappreciated.

Exactly. I honestly feel the changes that Mann made benefited the story he was trying to tell. It’s an adaptation, he basically stripped everything to the essentials, altered elements of the plot and then built his own version around it and it works beautifully. I think this is most clearly shown in the removal of the Red Dragon tattoo. Practically the entirety of Dolarhyde’s backstory is omitted, and even his actual reason for killing remains vague beyond a desire to “change”, but there are these little hints throughout the film offered up by both him and Graham that give an insight into his twisted psyche, and of course, if you’ve read the novel, you can apply all of that info to his character and it works even better. For that reason, I love the ending, it felt more fitting for Graham to face Dolarhyde (you’ll notice when he is dead on the floor, the blood forms the Red Dragon wings, an awesome way of still including the motif) in a more direct way, and in doing so, confronts his inner demons and beats them, allowing him to return to his family. I’m a sucker for depressing endings, but I absolutely love the way Mann executed that more uplifting conclusion. There is light amongst the darkness of the world.

Love that you guys feel the same as I do about this film. It's a hidden Gem. The TP letter ( is Hannibal rewriting the magazine letter he read so he could keep reading it ... Since its in Hannibal' s handwriting) The end of this movie is amazing. Way better than Red Dragon. I noticed too how 2 out of 3 of these movies have a " blind womam" obviously on this one and the Jodie Foster getting the lights turned out in the basement of Buffalo Bills house in Silence of the Lambs. This movie gets 4 stars from me. Hope you guys will review movies like The Pledge At Close Range About Schmidt Robocop 2 ECT. And let's all pray for a good 3rd Alien prequel!!!!!

You're wrong about Hannibal writing on the toilet paper. As The Tooth Fairy says that he's written it on Toilet paper in case Hannibal has to dispose of it quickly... I can't remember exactly how they start their conversations, it ends up being through "The Tattler" but I can't recall if it starts out that way, I'd have to rewatch or reread to be sure.

Oh, The Tooth Fairy tells Hannibal how to contact him on the toilet paper message, but Hannibal gets rid of that part of tp msg, the detectives then have that "race against time" while Hannibal's out of his cell while they try and work out their secret code (which turns out to be in the Lonely Hearts section of The Tattler)

I saw this film for the first time during a Forensics exhibition and conference cycle done by the Welcome Collection at Euston Road in London. There was a debate afterwards. When i went to see the film, I thought I had already seen it - I entered the cinema thinking that I had seen it. Then, I realised I hadn´t. I really liked it. It´s very faithful to the book, and I liked the CSI actor, William Petersen. I didn´t kow that it was going to be him, but I recognised him immediately. It was such a pity that he got typecast. Anyway, at least in CSI gave him the opportunity of a carrer and probably, even of making ends meet.

Good insights on this film I saw "Manhunter" before all the rest of the Hannibal Lecter movies (have zero interest in the books). The ones that glorify the murderer are not to my taste..."Manhunter" is grittier and the murderers are not glorified. William Petersen is a fine, often underrated actor and gives a solid center to the film, and the rest of the cast is so very good. Tom Noonan and Brian Cox are excellent. It's not a perfect movie but it delivers memorably.

Watched this at the age of 11 back in the late 80s and didn't know it was connected to the silence of the lambs when that was in cinemas in 1990. Always had this version on video or DVD much better movie than the remake, it has a unique vibe that's still watchable to this day.

I really think that "Manhunter" is the gem in the series. Nothing against Jodie Foster or Sir Hopkins, Will Graham is the most compelling character, and He's perfectly portrayed by William Petersen. I'll capitulate that it deviates from the novel in ways that the "Red Dragon" movie doesn't, but the spirit of the novel is in "Manhunter" were some scenes in "Red Dragon" feel like a pantomime. Pressing them together gets closer to the novel than either movie, Michael Mann and company really tried to portray the feeling of the man hunt. I think it really comes across. This really was what launched so forensic science into the public imagination.

Actually, the 2001 Hannibal film did well in the box office. In fact, it outdid Silence of The Lambs. It made $356 million at the box office, more than Silence of The Lambs, which made $272 million.

I loved Manhunter, but there is one bit that confused me. The sequence at the end where Dolahyde was tormenting the woman, was that meant to be at her place or his? I mean it looked like her place because she answered the door, but then how did the police know to go there rather than to Dolahyde's home? What did I miss?

fuck this movie is so good. Not even Philip Seymour Hoffman could elevate Red Dragon above it. Also Brian Cox absolutely nailed it. Yeah I saw Manhunter right before Red Dragon came out too, it got a DVD rerelease like a month prior to Red Dragon coming out to rental houses. I saw them both two weekends back to back, I watch manhunter every couple years now. And to be fair like that Gill Grissome whatever his name is, the CSI dude, he's really good this movie and To Live and Die in LA are some of the best procedural police movies ever made. I'm sorry, Brian Cox is the best LEcter, Hopkins is camp. Cox is threatening. and the chap on the right is correct, you're not asked to sympathize with the Fairy you're allowed to empathize with how broken he is and understand that he's a product of infinite sadness confusion and isolation.

It’s will Grissom and will Graham and to me with both have the same first name and initials it seems like a continuation of will Graham in CSI that made that series appeal to me when it was first aired. I couldn’t agree with you more about Manhunter it’s one movie I will always go back to watch, I saw it a couple of years before silence of the lambs on cable tv before seeing that and it will always be my personal favourite of the whole series of movies and tv shows since manhunter. It leaves it to the viewers to work out most things and leaves it up to your imagination to figure things out like the letter which I think lecktor wants them to find to set up Will and the FBI as he knows so much about how Will’s mind works and suggests that Will wanted the reporter killed, that kind of things make it so good to watch again and again.

Brian Cox was the best Hannibal. He is believable as a brilliant doctor / serial killer who went undiscovered. He is quiet and organized menace. Mads Mikkelson is excellent as well. Anthony Hopkins chews the scenery and is not believable.
